Display Cases - Any suggestions?
« on: February 09, 2011, 03:06:49 PM »

I am looking at finally displaying my collection.  The key things I want display is the entire run of the 1982 to 1994 figures and the foreign figures I have accumulated over the years.  I will worry about vehicles later.  The problem is finding display cases are a pain in the ass (the ones at Ikea that Mike and Charles use are no longer made).  But then I found this place which is just north of Markham.

Anything that you go with?  Mind you, I am not looking at drilling holes in the wall to install a display case.

As you saw from my smokey shelf thread, its a pain in the ass for me too.  The Ikea one that everone gets is too narrow, and they dont have any sliding door cases or "rim-less" doors that wont obscure the view in the case.  Pricing is also a problem.  Even on Craigslist or Kijiji its hit or miss and you dont know what you are getting until you go there.

That site looks pretty good, kinda looks pricey especially since its aluminum, but if you have the budget, go for it.  Also depends on how you want to display, mini battle scenes, single or multiple row figures with file card, ect.  Or a mixture of both?  How much room do you have to play with?  Sorry for the questions, I actually like talking about this stuff, and looking at peoples displays lol.  Have you considered building your own using Particle Boards and Glass doors and/or shelves?

Pete - Kijiji.ca is your friend.

Now, do you want to drive out towards Ottawa to get them?

I can get 20 figures on a shelf once you add some 1inch tiers behind each wave of figures.

So, 200 figures per case.

After looking at the Ikea cabinets again, I am not sure they will work for the room.  I have to re-think about them.

No battle scenes.  I want the figures to be displayed in rows like this: http://smalljoes.com/apex-action-figure ... case.shtml

I want to see the figures and not just buried behind others.  Filecards are useless to me.

I have a good size area to play with in the basement.

I won't build the cabinets myself.  They would look like crap.

I ended up building one myself.  Mind you I did it because I was renovation our basement anyway and the cheapest display large enough I could find to buy was this one:

I'm like you Pete I use to just line my figures up but then a lot of them get lost in the back.

I scored about 8 sets of heavy steel shelves when my plant was closing.  Just got to figure out how to make them pretty.

I counter sunk my Ikea cabinets when I pulled down the paneling and put up dry wall. They are not flush with the wall as that would impede the door from opening all the way. They stick out about 2 inches and look very good.

I'm on the fence with what to buy as well.  That small Joes stand that Pete should has a Dust free cover option as well.
