I was worrie about the construction,  with free parking I will take my car.

The hotel usually has lots of free parking. If it fills up, there is a small mall and cinema just across the street that has lots of free parking, so we're covered.

Thanks guys. B, I thought about getting my Adventure Team guys heads flocked. I found a place online that could do it. I had two obstacles, time and cost. However, it is a good idea, now that it's done, I may go that route.

I just realized that I did not publish my group shots. So here they are.

This was definitely the most ambitious project I have ever undertaken.  All told, it included about 45 figures and over a dozen vehicles and playsets. It consisted of five months of acquiring parts, assembling figures and vehicles, painting, photographing, cropping images, sorting and writing copy.
This project has been alive for me, in one form or another, for the last 5 years. I’ve been toying with doing Adventure Team and Action Soldiers customs since then and have slowly collected a variety of vehicles and accessories accordingly. Other projects always seemed to come first during that time. However, with the success of Battle Corps Month last year, I knew I wanted to revisit the month-long customs bonanza sometime in the future. The 50th Anniversary of the line gave me a great opportunity and theme to get off my butt and make these ideas into reality.

On a creative level, this project pushed me out of my comfort zone on several aspects. First, I had never undertaken so many figures at once. Whereas Battle Corps Month had mostly one figure per day, this project had 2 per day for the whole first half. Vehicle-wise, I had never tackled so many at once either. I had a few in my fodder boxes, but I had to acquire several before I could start painting. Also, this project gave me the opportunity to do a lot of scratch building, with the best example being the Training Center. I started incorporating new materials into my customs such as wood and styrene. Also, I seized the opportunity to upgrade my photography equipment and techniques. I had been putting off buying a new camera for a couple of years. Finally, I bought a new 16MP camera, but also a light box and 500W projectors. Lastly, since I wanted these to be fun, I wanted to display them in natural settings. Since shooting outside in December is not practical in Canada, I elected to scratch build three different environment dioramas: Jungle/beach, Arctic and Desert.

A massive thank you goes out to Paul ‘’Raginspoon’’ for taking on the contract to cast the original 1960’s GI Joe head. It allowed this project to have its own character and enriched it greatly.

Lastly, thanks to all who took the time to view the thread, write a note or leave a comment. I received several PMs of personal stories of nostalgia and fond childhood memories. Others saying that they looked forward to the reveals each day and that this project became part of their daily routine.  Reception to this project has been tremendous. Thanks to all Joe fans out there. Yo Joe!

Here are some work-in-progress pictures

Here are a couple of figures that were almost finished, but that did not crack the lineup. The yellow skydiver is from Skydive to Danger, released in 1974 and the orange skydiver is from Fantastic Freefall, released in 1969.

And finally, some shots of everything that was created for this project. There was so much that it can't fit on the dio-environments only. The table is 6'x8'.

50th Anniversary Day 31: AT Headquarters

This is it, the final (new) entry for this project. The original Adventure Team Headquarters was released in 1972. The Adventure Team was at the height of its popularity. The original set was made from hard plastic and soft vinyl (for the walls). It was designed to fold up into a carrying case. Its features included a central ‘’elevator’’, a working searchlight and a sliding front door. It was divided into 4 main areas:

-   The Map Room that had a table, maps and printed control stations
-   The Equipment Room containing storage spaces and a rack to store clothing and gear
-   A central area connecting the other three areas
-   A second Story Command and Control room

My custom is made from a few different components. I kept the layout of the 4 sections. The front 2-story part is made from an Animal Planet Dinosaur compound set. I removed the outside elevator, added a few controls and repainted everything to match the original. The Map and Gear Rooms are Playmobil garages. I added the accessories and furniture and painted everything in vintage colors.

The Adventurer included with my HQ is a nod to the ‘’Life-Like Body’’ GI Joe that was released in 1975. Also, if you look closely, you’ll see an Adventure Team helicopter backpack… Ok, you don’t have to look that closely.

Enjoy!

Hey oreo builder you do amazing work man.I have been following your 50th customssince you started the thread and being unable to post on your thread untill now, I must say that they are fantastic.. Great job .
I have a question. After you finish a custom and snap a bunch of photos do you break down the build and strip the paint and re use the parts or do you have a serious montage of all your builds ? I only ask because I recognize a few figures bodies/ accesories that used to be in my collection.

Thanks man. I don't generally re-use parts. Once they are painted, they are painted. I display everything I build as best I can. After my recent customs boom, I have some serious reorganizing to do in my basement display though.

50th Anniversary Day 30: Training Center

Released in 1972, the Adventure Team Training Center was a giant 36+ inch tower with a zip-line and a bunch of accessories. Properly set up, it was a base where Adventure Team member could go for physical training, target practice, medical help or just zipping down a rope really fast. It included the tower, zip-line, rifle stand and rifles, targets, survival cave, snake, tires, barbed wire and medical kit.

This is the custom that pushed me the farthest out of my comfort zone as it is completely scratch-built with wood. It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty proud of it. Going forward, I would like to improve the crane, add a rope ladder and add some details to the top of the tower to make it closer to the vintage version.

The custom Adventurer is a nod to the ‘’Jungle Survival’’ equipment set that included a camouflage shirt and khaki pants.

Enjoy!

50th Anniversary Day 29: Big Trapper

Big Trapper was released in 1976 at the tail-end of GI Joe’s original run. By that point, The Adventure Team had grown to include characters such as Major Mike Powers and Bullet Man. That year, in an effort to increase Joe sales, Hasbro created a new enemy for Joe to fight: The Intruders. These super-smart aliens resembled cavemen and had a ‘’bear hug’’ feature that allowed them to trap Joe in their powerful arms.

Big Trapper itself was built on the same frame as the Mobile Support Vehicle and was designed as a vehicle to trap and transport the Intruders. It was equipped with a laser cannon and a cage that had bars that could ‘’bend’’ allowing the Intruders to escape.

For my custom, I used the Captain America 6-wheeled tank as a base. I attached the cage to the back, removed the main turret and re-attached the gun. Rather than making it a ‘’laser’’, I opted for a harpoon. I found scans of the original stickers online. I printed them and added the control panels in the back section as a nod to the original. The end result is more an interpretation than slavishly vintage looking. When I put together my modern Adventure Team, this Big Trapper will probably be one of their vehicles.
I opted to include the Man of Action with Big Trapper. The original Man of Action had flocked hair, so my custom is not 100% accurate. However, the original 1964 head works pretty well in a pinch.

For the Intruders, I decided to have a little fun. I used Marvel’s Puck figure as a base and swap the head with something I had in my fodder. It’s not 100% accurate in that the Intruders should be a bit taller and have some armor. Maybe these are baby Intruders?

Enjoy!

50th Anniversary Day 28: Fate of the Trouble Shooter

Released in 1974, the Fate of the Trouble Shooter set included a vulture to fight. The original vehicle re-used parts from the 6-wheeler but had treads instead of wheels. Its main feature was the ‘’Talking Communications Center’’ that could say 6 different messages.

I started from the same base vehicle as the 6-wheeler. I changed the wheels, added the treads, added some styrene to the back and found some bits and pieces in my vehicle fodder box to build a convincing communications device. This turned out to be one of my favorites from this project.

Enjoy!
