Title: Nighthawk's modern updates on Spy Troops/VvV/DTC figures
Post by: nighthawk on January 17, 2012, 12:54:18 PM
I decided to split up my customs section into different threads based on what the custom figure is. This thread is for my modern updates to the figures released in the Spy Troops, Venom vs Valor and DTC era.

Sgt. Hacker:
I managed to score a Sgt Hacker in a trade so I decided to modernize him.  Since his Spy Troops disguise is Firefly, I found it fitting to use a Firefly base.  Didn't like the small feet so I swapped them out.  I cut up some parts from the original and added it to his arms as well as that thing on his right thigh.

The card art shows a grappling hook on his belt so I added that too.  Not a total 100% translation but I got the main parts that I wanted to transfer over, such as the knife on his webgear and the carabiner on his belt.  Hope you guys like it.

Hi-Tech:
I used a Firefly base for him and added some parts from the original.  He's not a faithful reproduction.  I took some liberties here and I added the Firefly backpack cause he needs some place to put all his Hi-Tech gear.  His chest harness is from Sgt. Weir from Star Wars comic pack with some original Hi-Tech parts glued on.

Mjr. Barrage:
I had a friend modify the arms onto the Roadblock body and paint the skin on the neck for me since I don't have any paint and the glue I have isn't that strong.  All I did was make the vest fit as it's too small for the Roadblock body, so this is basically his custom that I asked him to make for me.  I didn't get the legs painted cause I wanted minimal paint as I do with all my customs to avoid paint wear.

Med Alert:
Many might not know who he is.  Here's the original:  YOJOE.COM | Med Alert (http://www.yojoe.com/action/06/medalert.shtml)

I thought BBQ body would be perfect.  I had a friend paint the white and red parts for me and I did the rest.  I was going to mod the original's arm computer thing like I did for Hard Drive, but my friend did such a great job painting the detail on his left arm that it would be a shame to cut it off so I left it.

Depth Charge:
He is listed as an UDT specialist.  For me, that's too limited.  I wanted him to have some land use as well.  We see enough of his face to see that he is blonde so that's why I used the DTC Lowlight head.  Here he is updated and fit for modern warfare. :)

Dart:
The skin tone mismatch is not that bad in person, but the camera flash really makes it look a lot worse than it actually is.  I just put Spirit in the pictures just for fun.

I know the necks don't necessarily match color with the heads, but I don't want to bother painting and have the paint chip off later.
I had to modify the belt to fit Black Out.  I put it on backwards so he wouldn't have two holsters on one side.

Dr. Link Talbot:
When I first saw the figure, I was thinking that a white shirt and red track pants doesn't scream Navy Seal.  However, I liked the character and when the Resolute Stalker came out, I couldn't resist.  I think he looks more ready to kick ass now.

The era that introduced these characters had its issues, but the headsculpts for the most part fit in realy well with the 25th style figures. Barrel Roll remains one of the best heads from that era. I think reusing those heads with similarly coloured new bodies improves every one of these figures.

Well done.

I've used a few of those myself.

You get a timbit.

Heck, so does Scramble for summing up my thoughts on using those heads so well.  ;)

The club subscription figures are a bit too expensive for me, so I've gone and made a few of them for myself.  Here's my take on Surefire.  I based the head on the new club subscription one as opposed to his original release.

Very simple Ghost Bear.  The head is the vintage Ghost Bear and the rest is Renegades Firefly with Resolute Firefly legs.

Don't think Hasbro will make him again so I did.

nice work all around. I really like Redspot, Black Out. I love that you have given Depth Charge not only underwater gear but also some land gear so he's usable besides in water.
Title: Widescope and Shockwave
Post by: nighthawk on March 17, 2012, 05:13:27 PM
Here's my Joe SWAT team.  Again, as most know, I don't paint so I managed to kitbash together a Widescope.  Not true to his original look but I just made something that is more like just an update to modernize him.
Shockwave just had his neck modified so he can look down a little more and the backpack was added.

With helmets on instead of the caps
(http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l171/wing_woo/Joe%20Customs/096.jpg)

For the neck mod, I didn't like how he can't look straight or down so I cut a bit off the front so he has greater range of head movement now.

For the backpack, I modified the bottom ring of the knife holder to be able to hold his gas mask.  I cut the peg and used a pen ink holder as the peg.  Because the hole on the back doesn't line up with the vest, I designed it to just fit through the vest.  I might go back and make the vest hole bigger and then the backpack will be able to go into his back hole and it'll look tighter.

Nice work on updating (and improving) some rarely used Joes!  I really like your Med-Alert and Talbot.   Also, thanks for showing how to modify an old backpack to fit the new figures (that will definitely come in useful!).

I recently got a Recondo backpack and thought those two blue things might fit in with Hi-Tech.  What do you think?  Go with Recondo pack or stick with the Firefly one currently on him?

I finally got a Firefly vest that has the knife sheath.  In the original pics, I tried concealing that fact by the way I posed him. Now he is complete with the knife sheath and a knife.

Thanks!

Here's an updated Kamakura with some ninja buddies

I really like how they did Kamakura again, but I just couldn't get past his webgear.  I really like it, but just not on Kamakura.  The other thing is they used that Resolute Storm Shadow backpack and it to me is one of the worse designed backpacks in terms of the look after putting it on the figure.

Well, I don't have much ninja gear and I don't have an extra Renegades Storm Shadow black belt to use. :(

So, just using scraps at home, I came up with this:

For Snake Eyes, I like the Wave 1 Retalliation one, but wish he had more gear.  I really like the head and it reminds me of my favourite Snake Eyes, which is the V2 1985 one.  I found the 25th 5 pack one was too cartoony and didn't have as good articulation so I slapped some gear on this one to be my updated V2 SE.  I may cut up the wrist of the 5 pack one so he has the darts on his wrist though at a later time, but for now, he's just left like this.  Don't have any individual pics, but here he is with Kamakura and Nunchuk.

So, my Kamakura went from this:

to this:

to this:

Now, I've finally decided on my final Kamakura.  I really liked his double sword holster and cause of the color, if I don't use it on him, it would be wasted.  I just hate how high it sits, so I modded it and now attach it to his sash.  I like it better without the hood as well, so here's Kamakura:

The other reason I wanted to use the Kamakura backpack and swords was because I wanted to use the one I used for Kamakura before for my Slice so that he isn't so ill equipped.  Here's some shots of the parts I used to make my Red Ninja group.

Here's my take on Bombstrike.  A friend on Hisstank painted the camo on her butt (the flash makes it look a bit off, but in person, it matches perfectly) and painted the neck to match the skin tone for me.  I went with the Lady J top cause I'm sure she doesn't run around into battle with a t-shirt with a GiJoe logo on it all the time.

This one is loosely based off of this version:

All the Overkill parts used are from that one as well.  The rest is ROC Elite Viper and the elbow of a ROC Neo Viper.  The webgear is from POC Cyber Viper.

This is my second attempt as I screwed up the head and arm attachment on my last attempt.

I think the gun attachment is upside down in the pic.

Here's my latest two:

Here's my new take on Crosshairs.  I loved the new Lowlight body and I thought the Marauders one was perfect.  I only wish I had the Night Force version of Crosshairs' webgear and hat as the colors go better.  However, for now, this is what I have so it'll have to do until I finally can get my hands on the gear I wanted.

Thought I'd pose him with his vintage rifle as well just for fun, but I do prefer the one from Scarlett though.

Under his suit is nothing too inspiring though.  This is where I wish I had his NF webgear cause it's a darker green and I think would go better on this body.  I have his vintage belt as well, but since he has a knife on his leg already, it was kinda redundant so I gave him a backup sidearm.  I also have a scope for his leg but I sent it to Tofujesse to have it cast.

Don't know why they still called them Crimson Shadow Guard when he had no red on him, so I'll just call him a Shadow Guard.  Hope to be able to make a few more of these later if I get the parts.

Very simple.  DG CC with Python CG belt, rifle, backpack and head.  Logo is from Cobra Stickers.

Close up of logo.  I love the quality of Cobrastickers stickers.  It's thin enough so you can still get the logo to follow the creases of his uniform and still durable enough.

I'm finally happy with my Kamakura.  Thanks to Sgt Humpty for the final touch of painting the neck black for me.

It's the Retalliation Kamakura with DG SS's head.  The sash is from Red Ninja turned around and the backpack had the peg cut off and put onto the belt so it didn't sit so high.

Here's my Joe jungle ops sniper/infiltration team consisting of Cross Hair and Infra Red.  Infra Red was my entry in the G.I.Joe Reloaded project but I have made some changes to him since.  Basically, he stole a Jungle Viper suit to use for himself.  Now he can stay totally hidden while he spots for Cross Hair.

When I got this figure, the one thing I hated was the Hawk holster.  First off, it's pointless trying to conceal a holster if the strap goes across his chest.  Second, it was not functional.  Originally, I just gave him ROC Hawk's shoulder holster so it's hidden.  I finally decided to take the plunge and modify the holster so it's functional.

I got this figure off another member on Hisstank a long time ago before I started painting.  Can't remember who the member was.  However, when I got the figure he broke apart.  I never really found the right glue to fix it until today when I found out we have this crazy strong glue at work.  Anyways, I think I will start doing more customs where I have to crack a torso.

Anyways, with Cannonball, like I said, I got it off another forum member.  Originally, I didn't like how the head sat so I modified the head a bit more to get it to sit the way I like it.  If you remember trading this to me, add to this thread so you can get the credit due for this awesome custom.
