Title: Music ,sweet , music
Post by: g.ijoecollecter3400 on March 20, 2014, 08:49:56 PM
Now i have gotten to know a lot of you guys over the past year. You guys obviously see my Freddy Mercury avatar.

Music is ( was ) a big part of my life before i grew into having kids and collecting g.i joe's. So i just wanted to touch base and find out what some of your favorite bands are. Of course we all have the METALLICA, IRON MAIDEN, GUNS AND ROSES, LED ZEPPLIN days.

But more to the point, id like to know what songs really speak to some of you. For instance i myself discovered SOCIAL DISTORTION about 3 years ago. Loved the band ever since !!! ( 99 to life has got to be my all time favorite song ever )

Another band that struck me as really good is OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW ( Im not just mentioning them because of the Darius Rucker waggon wheel cover, That cover in my opinion sucks! Although they are a blue grass band, its blue grass from our generation, you haven't ever heared music like this, I promise!. Mainly there 2nd album ( Big Iron World )

More recently i found me first and the gimmy gimmys ( you have to hear there version of country rhoads, awesome! )

Just trying to keep up the chatter with this post and give us something to talk about other the Joes for 5 min. LOL
Plus im always interested in hearing music i have not discovered.

????

Megadeth has and will always be my #1.

A few others:
Pink Floyd
Iron Maiden
Classic Rock (60's-80's)
80's Brit synth pop

This was one of the few highlights of the '00's for me.

The Clash # 1
70s pre punk
Late 70s British/yankee punk
80s American hardcore (Bad Brains, Black Flag, DRI, Cro Mags for a few examples)
Insert lots of street punk (krum bums, the unseen, monster squad, government warning, the virus )
Mix in some Social Distortion some old school country some garage surf and some thrash metal with .....a case of beer. ... Awesome!

Basically. I could spend 3 days listing bands I like from the Beatles and hank Williams all the way to Municipal Waste and Havoc!

My uncles 70 yrs old, and he's always working in his garage with The Cure full blast on the stereo. ALWAYS with the cure.
Don't get me wrong. I like The Cure but not none stop all day every day. So i brought him the KILLERS battle born cd. He liked it, he was like " wow, there good where did you find them ? '' . I was like " wasn't hard, there only the biggest band in the world right now " LOL

Then i lent him the Direct Hits album they just released, that was 2 months ago. Dont think ill see it again. Ill have to buy myself another copy

I realize this an old thread but I'm pretty new here and music is always in my life. So I had to share as this didn't warrant a new thread.

Sacrifice from Scarborough, Ont is #1. REANIMATED!!!!!!!!
Symphony X, George Strait, Simon and Garfunkel, Danny Elfman, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steel Panther, Within Temptation, Venom, Exploited, Chopin, Dixie Chicks, Celtic Frost.
Throw my Ipod on random and stand back
I listen to damn near anything that has guitar in it. Orchestra too.

Utopia by Within Temptation really swims in my head a lot.
I catch myself humming Fireball by Pitbull lately.

My youngest told me this: "Music is like candy. You throw away the rappers."

Iron Maiden for sure till I die! ("with my boots on").  All metal is great....  Been getting into Pellek a Rocker from Norway recently.  Check him out on youtube!  this is a cover of Let It GO from Frozen for all the people who have to listen to kids tunes all day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeRlvHNu8hI   And anything indie like!

Queen will always be top 10

Strange thing is I like a lot of Country music too like George Strait and Paul Brandt.
Don't laugh because I like music like Jimmy Buffet, 50cent and Lynkin Park too.  Also, stuff like Chicago, and Blood Sweat and Tears.

I know I'm all over the map.

I didn't know so many of us shared music tastes.

My background is first and foremost Punk.

When I was a little kid I listened to a lot of metal like Quite Riot and Twisted Sister.

70's Punk like the obvious bands like Sex Pistols, Class, Ramones and less popular band like Stiff Little Fingers (look up Suspect Device by Stiff Little fingers). I also spent a week digging through a bunch of hole in the wall records shops in the UK when I was 16 looking for rare Pistols albums.

80's was all about the band the Circle Jerks. Keith Morris was my idol. I'm also a fan of Dead Kennedys but I also like odd bands like sigue sigue sputnik.

From the 90's I like a mix of the industrial music like Ministry to most of the fat wreck chords and epitaph stuff plus GWAR. I'm a huge fan of GWAR. To date they still put on the best show I've seen, even with a new singer. I also enjoy New York hard Cord like Bio Hazzard.

Once we got into 2000 there wasn't a lot that grabbed my attention so I stared to get back into metal. My sons favorite song is "Holy Wars" by Megadeth, so it's safe to say I listen to a lot of that. You can never go wrong with Iron Maiden either.

Wow Dave!  Most of the groups you mentioned I grew up listening to as well.  And in the 90's I attended a lot of concerts including Bio Hazzard, Megadeth, Ministry and GWAR!  I also saw the staples like Kiss, GNR, Motley Crue, Van Halen and Maiden every time they came around since 1990 even the Blaze Bailey era.

And to think we usually only talk Joe

its not that surprising to me that a lot of people have the same music tastes. 19660-early 2000's  was when music was about music and bands were less concerned about branding. I just prefer music where people play their own music vs the dude dancing on stage with a bunch of dancers with choreography.
I think we're due to get back to something worthwhile to listen too.

I generally prefer music where one person can write the lyrics and it doesn't take six people to write 'i love my girl, ooh, I miss her. ooo bee dooby doo' or stupid stuff like that Bieber kid sings

In the 50's and 60's it was actually more often than not that artists didn't write their own music. A song would come out and there would be multiple cover versions of it floating around. The problem with pop stars today isn't that they don't write their own music, but rather that the songs are written by committee and sent through focus groups to have all of the rough edges scrubbed off.

I think it's both, people not writing their own material and committee written crud
