Title: Looking for a job in Southern Ontario
Post by: Collectorman on August 08, 2004, 10:33:39 PM
Okay guys, This might be a bit of a long shot, but what the hell...

When I left for Nova Scotia, I burned my bridges at the Stag Shop. Now since I'm back in Ontario, I'm looking for a job. Anyone know any good companies that are hiring?

Qualifications wise, I've done a bit of everything. The only thing I have NO experience with is food preparation (I worked in a grocery store for years, but I can't cook worth a crap). I went to school for a diploma in Radio Broadcasting, but I didn't finish the course because I couldn't find a co-op.

I've recently been thinking about joining the Army, but that would absolutely kill my mom.

Anyone have any suggestions?

it's a site for radio news and job postings.  if you have an interest in getting back into it, the station i work at is looking to hire some ops.  and so are a couple of stations out in niagara.  might just be a foot in the door for now, but who knows....?

good luck, and welcome back to the s dot o dot.

Thanks Radio Guy! I remember that website from my days at Mohawk College. If I remember right, I even put some resumes out from it.

Unfortunately I can't be much help in Alberta, but I can say good luck!

I have considered joining the Army several times, I have a friend who is in and says I should join.  With my university degree I could walk in as an officer, plus I know they are looking to hire more pilots.  I've always wanted to learn how to fly, especially a helicopter and keep thinking that I should get the government to train me, since its cheaper that way.  But right now I'm happy with my job as a PI, so my plans for the Army are on the backburner.

Any idea what you want to do?  Any inklings at all?

And another offtopic rant, what is the minimum wage in Ontario?

The problem with Canadian Forces pilots is that once they have enough flight hours, they wait for their term to end and they leave in droves to become civilian pilots, which pays WAY better and is a lot safer. I really can't say I blame them...with the state that most flying equipment is in with the Canadian Forces, you literally take your life into your hands when you go near any of it. When I was in Nova Scotia, I lived near Shearwater airforce base, and every week I would walk to the bus stop, I could either find a piece of a Seaking in someone's lawn/field or get to watch a piece fall off the helicopter.

I've really been struggling with this for years. I really don't know. I tend to take jobs just until I find something better, but all my jobs have never really gone anywhere. I took radio broadcasting because it one of those jobs that changes day to day...but after sending resumes to every source we had and then not being able to finish the course because no one could find any co-ops...I really kind of gave up.

I believe it's $7.15/hour nowadays.

Are you looking for a job or a career? If you just want a job, try a place like EB games. That might be fun for a while, see what new games are coming out, get stuff cheap. My wife use to work for one of the Bell World stores and with the commission on top of her pay she did alright.
Really depends on what you want to do. Do you want to deal with cash again, or some sort of trade.
Heck, if you have some radio experience and you worked at the stag shop, mix the 2 together and become a DJ at the local nudie bar.  :shifty:

I actually had a friend tell me the same thing. I dunno, I'm trying to stay away from the sex biz this time. Too many dildo shops on one resume might raise some eyebrows.  :shifty:

I started training for a security guard placement thing last week, problem is a placement could take forever to get and the cost of working (uniform/shoes/tools) could cost me more money than I have.

Oh well, things will work out, they always do. As long as I can pay my car payments, I don't mind being broke.

Well guys, I got a phone call yesterday from the Brick on Upper James in Hamilton and they wanted me to go in for an interview! I showed up at 3pm yesterday afternoon and had a very successful interview.

The job is for a sales rep position in a company called Insta-Rent, they work within the Brick store and do rent-to-own sales for customers with no/bad credit. The position includes a little bit of everything from delivery driving to sales to advertising. I'm pumped!

Anyways, I have a secondary interview tomorrow (Friday) and if that goes well, I have to complete a criminal check and driver's abstract. I'm still not 100% I have it, but the store manager told me that VERY few applicants were called back for a second interview, so I believe my chances are REALLY good!

Amazingly enough, they were very impressed with me being a salesman at the Stag Shop...after the interview, the manager asked me a few questions about a particular product he bought once at the London store.

Wish me luck guys!!!

As you yourself has said many times, you are NEVER going to live that down.

My buddy Brian worked at Adults Only for a year...... that was 7 years ago.

He's still referred to as 'Porn Boy'

Good Luck.............. Stag Boy!

I'm officially a working stiff again! Turns out the secondary interview was just a ruse to see how interested I was in the job. The manager basically told me I was hired if and when I walked through the door on Friday.

Thanks for all the well wishes guys!
