Title: 2011 JoeCon
Post by: Realboss on April 01, 2011, 05:32:05 PM
What are your impressions so far?

I kind of like the Crimson Hiss but wish they would distribute the Black Hiss more before they put out a repaint.

I really love the Crimson Hiss now. First pics at toyfair didn't really impress me, but these new ones do it more justice.

I am glad to see a boxed example of the armor cycle and Scout Hiss.  That means they won't be far off.

I really like the new vehicle boxes, they combine new styling with old school flavour.  The art on the front really looks good compared to the Vamp, Fury, etc.

I'm disappointed in the Renegades panel.  They did their best political speak by saying GI Joe is not going anywhere, but no real talk of Renegades specifically coming back.  I am going to assume it will be another new incarnation after the movie.

I can't wait for tomorrow.  I know with the Skystriker we probably won't get any other new "big" items, but I am hoping to see at least 1-2 more vehicles and another wave of figs.  Possibly even some exclusive repaints (NIGHT BOOMER!) I know keep dreaming.

Hey fellas, got a question.  I just got into town, should I go at 10:00 tomorrow or is there any reason to go at the "walk in late registration, private preview for registered guests" at 8:30?  I didn't register or get a set.
Title: Re: 2011 JoeCon
Post by: Realboss on April 02, 2011, 10:06:06 AM
As far as I know there are no sets left so late registration would really only be for the banquet and early preview.

Post by: canprime on April 02, 2011, 12:05:16 PM
Well that was disappointing.

The Hasbro Panel just ended and I have been reading up on other sites.

Looks like there are going to be a ton of figure repaints and a few really cool sounding new figures.  I'm excited by the new ARAH accurate Airtight and Lifeline.  Also the new Data Viper with Drone sounds cool.

As for vehicles, well once again if you are a vehicle lover like me you are disappointed.  The Cycle Armor and Hiss Scout don't have a home, and they are hoping for an online retailer to try and take them.

The remaining vehicles are all that is coming apparently.  So while I am excited by the ones being released, it doesn't bode well for the next 12 months.  The Skystriker sounds great, as well as the SDCC Starscream version, but who knows what is going to happen with retailers and a bigger vehicle.

Ya very basic info and most we already know.

I've heard a few rumours about Walmart pulling out on selling Joes.  One was Walmart wanted better purchasing prices and Hasbro wasn't willing to give a significant enough price break.  Another was the vehicles weren't moving quickly enough.
Title: Re: 2011 JoeCon
Post by: canprime on April 02, 2011, 12:30:02 PM
Well with the pics now posted, it looks a lot better than I feared.  There don't seem to be any repaints on display.

The figures look really good.  I like that we are getting 7 more ARAH figures updated (Steel Brigade, Airtight, Lifeline, Sci-Fi, TechnoViper, Zarana, Kwinn) and most of the Renegades figures look really outstanding.  It is a shame the show is going bye bye.  It would have been the a great cross promotion, but it sounds like Hasbro just isn't willing to bank of Joe in a serious way anymore.

I still stick to the lack of vehicles being a kick in the nads for me, but c'est la vie!

Oh, and sorry but the Zombie Viper looks dumb.

The Data Viper sounded like a good idea, but after seeing the pics, it just looks ridiculous.

Originally I wasn't into the Renegade figures but like Canprime said those are some sweeeet figs.  I love the Renegades Cobra Trooper and Law & Order!  But why Ripcord and not Roadblock?

I may have to pass on the Starscream if it's that expensive.  Just crazy.

Well if we Torontonians are lucky again this year, we should be able to get some at only slightly higher prices at FanExpo.  Also, here's hoping with the high dollar that they can come in at or near the US price.

I'm on the fence with the Data-Viper.  I hope that Dome head is removeable and has a normal head underneath.  Are those Missle launchers attached to his head?  I hope the satellite is movable...
But the Drone that comes with it will be amazing!

Yeah I learned my lesson from last year.  I will be attending on Friday if they are making the SDCC exclusives available this year.  Sgt. Slaughter was available on Sunday, but Galactus was long gone.  So I expect Starscream to disappear fast if he is available.

Also, from the early pics, it looks like the retail on the Skystriker is suggested at $29.99.  So hopefully we will see the same on the low end, up to $50 on the high end.

Come on Hal, get us those prices!!!

Yeah it looks like missile launchers.  I am not really moved one way or the other about his colouring, but the Drone looks awful to me in green.  I would have preferred a Cobra blue.

Also, does anyone else get a bit of a Jahdoon? vibe from the Data Viper?  (those were the Rhino-like mercs from Doctor Who)

With the Renegades figures, All look amazing!  I even like what they did with Scarlett! But what is the fascination with Ripcord?  He is dead in the show? (Sorry if you did not watch the show yet :-X) Why did they not make Roadblock instead?

I know more figs are coming as they did not make the Baroness, Dr. Mindbender and Destro, and etc.

Ok, new better pics confirm the suggested $29.99 on the Skystriker.  So that is great news on pricing.

I really like what I see from a lot of them, especially the classic remakes like Lifeline, Law and Order, Sci-fi, Techno-Viper, Air-tight and a decent Kwinn.  The renegades figures Ill prob be passing on though they do look good, some look like good custom fodder for me, I hope the head sculpt for Scarlett turns out ok in this regard.  And I still dont like the Orange for the Hazard viper..Would rather them have used the Toxo Viper colors, though maybe they did this on purpose incase they actually do a faithful remake of the classic.

YAY KWINN!!!!

Easily the hilite of the show. Well, for me anyways. :)

Definitely more new stuff than I expected. Very cool stuff.

For someone who has complained about the look of renegades, I have to admit the renegades figures look great, for the most part. CC is probably the weakest, but overall they really do look great. I'll likely pass on all the renegades stuff, but awsome for the fans of the toon. Tunnel rat's head sculpt reminds me of captain minh. Could make for an easy custom. And oddly the renegades storm shadow puts both PoC storm shadows to shame. Very nice figure. Might be the only renegades figure I pick up.

The $30 price point on the skystriker is pleasantly surprising. Wasn't planning on getting one, but maybe if I can get it at retail for around that price. the starscream version will likely be a pass for me.

The anniversary figures all look amazing! Really really impressed with the likes of Lifeline, sci-fi, techno-viper, zarana, etc.
Kwinn is the ultimite though. His head sculpt looks a little off maybe for some reason, but that's just nitpicking. Yay for Kwinn!!! Thank you Hasbro! Now bring on Dr. Venom, Billy, Gen Flagg, the Oktober Guard... :)

Kwinn, huh?  I guess maybe I would have known that if I had attended the panels...

In general though, how can you have a convention where general admission only sees a couple of exclusives left and those at double the price?  And then they wanted 20 bucks extra for autographs.

We all understand that Hasbro is making repaint because it costs less than making something totally new. But, I don't don't the Starscream (2 seats) Vs. Sky striker (1 seat) difference. I mean, why they didn't used the same cockpit mold (2 seats) to make both?

You are always welcome up north turner.

If anything, the news seems sort of blah.  A few nice new figures I am looking forward to, but overall nothing earth shattering.

And now Bonaventura is apparently feuding with the powers that be due to their pick for director?  This bodes ill.  I think I'll hang with the kids in the SW universe for a while yet.

Hasbro has been saying all weekend that the 2 seater was just an early mock-up pic.  The actual mold for both the Skystriker and Starscream is a 1 seater.  There is no new 2 seater.

The collectors club has announced their new project:

http://generalsjoes.com/2011/04/02/my-t ... scription/ (http://generalsjoes.com/2011/04/02/my-take-on-the-g-i-joe-collectors-club-subscription/)

I'm thinking it will be at least $240-$300 for the 6 month/13 figures

If this keeps up with all the cool Joe stuff coming out I'm going to have to ask for a raise.

My question is:  What if they make figures for one month I don't want?

My impressions:
I like the new figures shown, but found it interesting that no new vehicles were shown ( Crimson HISS is just a repaint).

Most intriguing figure: The Data-Viper. For me, this spells it all out. I like it when Hasbro takes some chances with a design, goes a little over the top and does something different. I've read elsewhere a number of voices that dislike the figure.....and it puzzles the heck out of me. I personally don't want more of the same, I want something DIFFERENT, that expands the concept and builds upon things. The Data-Viper is the kind of design scheme that shows what Hasbro designers can do--and I applaud that.

I love the trend of more accessories for the figures--if they can fit them all on the figure-great. If they cannot, no big deal---its all about giving the figure options. With the first couple of waves of POC, I bought doubles of some characters--simply because the added accessories made for compellingly different looks. That and if one is into kit-bashing/swap-bashing new figures, the added bits really help make a all-new character stand out. It helps fuel the imagination, and gets one into interacting with the toys more.
To me THAT pluses the hobby.

But I think this is just a taste of the stuff in the pipeline and SDCC and Fall Toy Fair will reveal more.
I can't wait.

I agree, they should be doing new things. I'm not sure if I like the data-viper, just because I don't get what all his stuff is. If it's got some logical or cool purpose, then I'm probably sold on him. I think he looks kinda cool. But they do need to continue with anniversary style figures like Lifeline and Sci-Fi and getting to guys like Kwinn. I've been waiting almost 30 years for that figure!

So overall it looks like a nice mix. Some new modernized figures, some renegades and some anniversary.

The gear is one of the best things in this line. I've never understood the logic of needing all of it to fit on a figure at once. I don't wear everything from my closet at once! So, yeah, more gear, more options, more fun!! Kwinn comes with some awsome gear! It all comes back to Kwinn for me. :)

Sorry to hear the crap you went through Turner.  It was just another typical cash grab for MC as far as I'm concerned.  They tout about making it fair for collectors to get the exclusives and then turn around and intentionally introduce the golden ticket for exclusive buying rights where you can get up to three times the amount of exclusives before anyone else has a chance.  Of coarse people are going to load up on figures to sell when they just spent $500 for the privilege.  I guarantee in 95% of the cases they weren't buying them for their friends and MC knew full well this would happen.

That sucks, Turner!  I hope you still had a good time otherwise?  If the only good thing about the JoeCon is the exclusives, I will pass and only go to the CJC, where the Con Set is Great, but it not the only thing there to see and do...

Well guys, I made it to the con and got in line for general admission yesterday an hour and a half early.  Got inside and every single exclusive was sold out.  The vendors and the scalpers had bought them up with their golden ticket and then turned right around and sold them at the same con for twice the price.  And worse, I only saw one paradrop viper and about two of everything else.  Saw one con set for 449, the paradrop for 45, two two packs for 90 each, and the stinger and moccasin for crazy money, and a few dial tones for 200.  My first experience with master collector has not been a positive one.  What kind of bull is it to lower the number of con sets and start that golden ticket rip off so that somebody has to take off five days of their life just to have the privilege of paying a ridiculous price for bagged figures?

Welcome to the MC business model.  It rewards people willing to shellout the big bucks early.  However to be fair every big con has the same dealer problem.  Look at SDCC, they have the same problem every year with dealers and lines for exclusives.

I'm not trying argue with you Turner, I enjoyed talking with you in line last year at the CJC, but to be fair again MC has been using this model for 10 years so no one should be surprised by the results anymore.  Yes you can be upset, but you shouldn't be surprised.

It's a shame they don't use the CJC model and only allow a limited number of exclusives for dealers.

Sounds like a raw deal. Sorry to hear your experience isn't what you'd hoped, Turner.

As for their business model...just because it has a precedent, doesn't mean it's a good strategy.
Sounds like they disappointed a customer and this thread has turned off a lot of others, I'm sure...

According to them, it's "our" collectors club.  It has and continues to be a load of bullshit.  What you went through is a prime example.

This just shows the difference between running a business and putting on a convention for the love of the hobby.

Really to be far they should withhold a large percentage of the souvenirs for when the convention officially starts on Friday or not even offer early purchases.   It's suppose to be a club not a for profit business.

Yup, and I have 2 of them. But this is the first one in his summer duds. :) It's still pretty remarkable how few figures he's gotten over the years. A winter one would be nice in the 25th style of figure as well.

As for the Con and the exclusives (can't speak to the con itself, never been to the US one), it's a tough situation. I actually hate exclusives because of these situations. I mean, really, what's the point of producing something in such low numbers that 99% of collectors will never have the figure, or they'll have to pay through the nose for it. Yes, I realize this statement isn't really in favour of the CanJoeCon stuff either, but it's just my personal opinion on exclusives, nothing against the fine folks who run the Cons. I suspect that no matter what anyone who organizes a con does, short of really mass producing the items, there will be a scalper problem. It happens with the CanJoeCon stuff too, it's just not as blatent and immidiate as seeing the items scalped in the room 10 minutes later. And if the organizers up production numbers too much, then they're stuck with inventory and perhaps a loss. It's gotta be a tough balance, but I do think they could up production a fair bit without that happening.

My biggest problem is if the crazy exclusives are part of a set that I collect at retail and then I will not be able to complete my set for a reasonable price.
That Dial Tone figure bugs me, because it probably means Hasbro won't make a 25th style dial tone for at least a long time. Which is a bummer. Yes I could join the club and get him, but I see no real benefit from the club beyond that exclusive, so I'd essentially be paying $50 or whatever for one figure. But oh well, c'est la vie.
To end this post on a high note:

I've got a billion things to say on many different topics but my time is short.

All in all, I understand why everything was done the way it was. I use to be a loyal fan of the MC club and became jadded to them after a while but at the end of the day I see thier point of view on most things.

One thing I didn't like was I brought down my Natalie Pool from last years set that had 2 right thighs on her. I tried to exchange her and they said "No, we are only doing that for the current year but try at the Lets make a Deal table and you might find one".

So I went to that table. I was working with Karmakura from Joe Customs (Super nice guy, 100% had my back). I didn't see her and we were front row center. I do a list later when I get back of what I did score (8 12' figure, 25 random pieces of clothing, 3 heads, some boots and odd thing, all new = $60  ;D ;D ;D :timbits:)

Anyhow, about 3:00 same day I was looking at a box of 1 billion purple Hydrofoil engine covers and some walks out from that back and throws 2 Natalie figures in the box in front of me. "Uhhhh, I want to exchange a defective figure of her from last year and I was told it was done for the current year only. Sooo, I'll give you a buck for that one with the broken arm?"

Sold.

Got my figure fixed and now how some rare custom fodder pieces.

Back to the con itself.

Mickey Mouse Cobra Commander is awesome. Pics don't do him justice. Way better then Dial Tone IMO.

The vehicles are sold wins. They even explained the number stamp on the topm of the Stingers. Something about BA standing for "Black Adam" and the numbers are from an old cop show that is a call for back up.

New figures like Airtight are as good as Lowlight when it comes to detail.

Heck, I got to watch the main sculpter sculpt at the show. He was behind a clear cube and just talked to me while working. Sort of wish I had my tape recored or even Black Berry with me. That would have made for a great Joe Canuck article.

The Crimson Hiss looked good. I like my Chrome one better.

I kept yelling "Chrome it" at both Hasbro and MC round tables.

MC group as a new project in the works. It's not set in stone yet but this is what they want to do starting THIS summer. They want to do something like the Marty group where you get 2 figures mailed to you every month for six months. They will be cared just like Dial Tone are are trying to keep the price the same area (so probabaly $50 a month plus shipping). If you joing from the start then at the end of 6 months there will be a bonus 13th figure. Only way to get #13 is if you stay with them from the start. They are being smart about it and going after cancelled figures from Hasbro like Quarrel and the white Nano Bat with clear green arms. Those would be the first two figures and they showed us the mock ups. They looked great.

I'm sure there is more but I gotta go for now.

Skystriker retailing at 29.99 surprised me, I was thinking it would be way higher considering the roc prices (rhino, night raven, even the mid sized vehicles were 25).

My question is:  What if they make figures for one month I don't want?

sell them on eBay for a ridiculous mark-up, of course!

The problem with selling them is if they aren't priced reasonably they may not sell.  Considering it would cost $25 a figure plus $21 for shipping even split if the two figures do ship together so $10 and hoping there isn't any customs tax.  After packaging and fees $40 would be the cheapest for one figure not including shipping to the buyer.

I guess it all depends if I'm willing to pay $35 or more for one figure myself.

Absolutely loved the new Renegade's figures-shame we didn't get Roadblock,Baroness or even a Zartan figure (maybe later on in the year).
The Con exclusives look great but as always some greedy people buy loads then sell them for extremely high prices-is there any way that this can be stopped-maybe limit to 2 of each per person.
This doesn't happen at any of the Canadian Con's as far as I'm aware.
Loved the vehicles-especially the Cycle Armor w/Ashiko but was surprised that we didn't get any Renegade vehicles like the Coyote or even that superb jeep that Flint & LJ ride in-again maybe later in the year.
All in all I'm going to be poor for another year.

Turner, I'm sorry you had to go through all that trouble.  But this is the way of all cons, not just Master Collector.  Even Canada Joe Con.  If you went last year to Canada Con at about 6-7 am even hoping to get a Cobra Snake you would have been out of luck.  If you are going to a con, and you want to get the exclusives, you really have to plan ahead.  You can't show up whenever it's convenient and expect things to still be there for sale.  This con was worst than most as far as sellouts go.  But for those who say that MC were just looking for the cash grab, that's not entirely the case.  They were originally going to do 2x for regular attendees, and 6x for golden ticket since it was a multiple of 3 for golden ticket, then they realized they would have sold out of everything before about half of the regular attendees got through line on thursday night, so they shifted it to 1 and 3.

Was there anyone else sporting Canada Con shirts at the con this weekend?  I saw a joecanuck mod wearing one, but didn't see anything else.  I was worried that Savage might give me a grimace when I was talking to him at the panel while wearing one, but it didn't seem to be an issue.  I kept pushing the "GET YOUR PASSPORTS NOW"  message onto everyone who picked up a flyer at the declassified booth, so they won't have any excuses this year (like they seem to every year).
