Title: U.S.S. Flagg
Post by: Zenith27 on August 17, 2013, 06:01:37 PM
OH NO!

Someone offered me a near complete Flagg for $500. This was the one ARAH vehicle I had decided early on I didn`t have room for. No box but unapplied stickers, Canadian instructions and Keel Haul with gun & FC.

Someone convince me I don`t need this!

The Flagg is a 6 foot long pile of CRAP. You don't need it. Who's offering it to you if I may ask  ;D ? . I swear, it's only so that I can convince him not to sell it to you  ::)

Back in the day..............you just know you're going to hate a tale that begins with "back in the day"......

When I was first starting to collect, I had a shot at both the FLAGG and the defiant complex, in the box.  This was around......1987, so they were still haunting some retailers, and in the Vancouver BC area too.

The Defiant was interesting because there were several available at the store--a toy liquidator ( whose name I forget) located in a old "Supervalu" or IGA store on east, east Hastings street. in Burnaby, right across from the refinery before Burnaby mountain. They had about a half dozen of these sitting at the back of the show floor..........for $75, each.
Oh, I was tempted.........very tempted, as I was still a couple of years into collecting RAH by that time.  But.......I had no way to get the thing home. A buddy of mine had a car, a Ford Escort, iirc......and, well...........the thing was too small. The BOX for the Defiant was TOO BIG to fit in his car.
I know, we measured both.

So I left those sets there. The price was easily the best I'd ever get on that set, but the circumstances.........just would not allow it.

The Flagg, was not too longer after. I was shopping at a hobby shop on west 10th Avenue, near UBC ( the much-missed Crash Crippletons), and I stopped by a Rexall Drugs pharmacy closing down, its final liquidation sales were that day. Since those stores commonly stock some toys i thought I'd take a peek inside.
And inside was a handful of carded joes for 25 cents each---bought about 5 figures I did not have.  But up on a shelf was the USS Flagg, MIB........unspoken for. I took a long look at that thing........I was riding transit so I had no way to get it home. But here's the killer:  the thing was marked
with a sheet of paper saying " discount", but there was no price.
I asked a harried staff member, who looked over his shoulder at the thing and didn't even waste a moment, and then told me it wasn't spoken for yet.  The price:

$25.

And again, I had to leave the set there, as the store was closing forever just a couple of hours from then. I can only assume someone else walked out with it.
<sigh>

Oh yeah, these two haunt me..........so close...........soooo close.

Honestly, I wouldn't have been able to board the transit bus with it. It would not have fit in the front doors of the bus on that route, at that time .  And it was right around the start of rush hour. Was just not do-able.

i've never been at all bothered about getting the Flagg. i figure it's just so goddamn huge, it's just going to sit there, taking up space i don't have, gathering dust. all i could do with it, is maybe stick my Skystriker and my Dragonfly on the flight deck to do a couple of photos, it's not like i could take it down the stream and take photos of it.

i'd sooner spend the money one'd cost on other stuff like a Natalie Poole, a Skymate, a Mamba, a WHALE or whatever.

I don't HAVE an urge. the 'big ticket' payset i would probably most like to get is the TTPB, or the Mobile Command Centre, if you count that as a playset not a vehicle. i don't care for the Terrordrome, particularly, or the Defiant. I used to drool over the MCC in the Argos catalogue as a kid, though.

The only thing that saves the Flagg and TTBP is that they come apart for easy storage. The HQ also has this nice feature. That MCC, Defiant and Terrordrome need their own zip code no matter how you store them and if you can't easily store them they get dirty or busted.

TTBP is a good choice if you've got the HQ. Small parts, easy to ship and store, hard to break so parts are plentiful thus cheap.

Or did you just chuck the whole " NO " button unit out car window on your way to picking up your Flagg...? LOL : )

Missing one deck clip it seems. I thought there were 15?
Main superstructure has a couple cracks, not a real issue.

WE HAVE FLAGG LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!

Yup, never thought id ever see that either, unless i bought one MISB.

A lose flagg with stickers not applied got to be worth quite a bit more then just having it loose.

Wonder how much...?

Just wondering how much you figure the value of it is, because the stickers are not applied....? 50$ more....?  100$ more....?

My first Flagg had a lot of unapplied stickers. Still had the sheets too.

Congrats - looks like you are really thrilled with it!

Personally I'd say since you can buy repro decals for about $90 it's about even. Easier to clean without them on but 30 year old glue is pretty much shot at this point.

The important thing to me is to have all the decals in the correct spots and the decal sheets are pretty beat up after 30 years. The glue is all leaking out from the smaller sheets and, for example, the missiles will likely need the ones I applied removed, cleaned of the remaining glue and re-glued pretty soon since they're already falling off.

It also looks like maybe 10 decals are missing and my be stuck to the back of another decal sheet still with the seller (He had a LOT of decal sheets and they were all sticky). I've contacted him to see but if they're not there I'll likely have to shell out $90 just to complete them.

In that case I likely won't use the vintage deck decals since they're coated with some wrinkly clear vinyl layer that, frankly, will look like hell once applied. I've never seen Joe stickers like them. They must be so they withstand having toys drive over them.

By FAR the best thing about having the decals come unapplied is that the original owner saved the decal application instructions. Those along with the Canadian blueprints are worth about $100 more and they're in great shape.
