I NEED HELP TO MAKE MY OWN BLACK ICE FIGURE
« on: June 20, 2008, 12:29:32 PM »

Hey, who can tell me how I can make my very own BLACK ICE figure ? I already have all the parts, I just need to know about the step by step paintjob... because yes, I'm no expert when it comes to customized but I surely would love to do a good job on this guy.

Thanks to anyone that can help me!

Step one, we can have lots of fun.

Step two, it's just me and you.

Wait now, that's new kids on the block...

Don't worry so much about paint. What you need is something called Rit dye. You can get it at Walmart. It's fabric dye. Get a pack of black rit dye and an old pot you don't care about. Add around 3 -4 inches of water and bring the water to a very low heat. Add the dye, stir it a bit and then add the pieces. Make sure that water doesn't splatter on your clothes as it will stain it. With the water at a very low heat let is sit in the pot for an hour or two. I use an old strainer and paper towels to pull the pieces out of the water. rise them off very well to remove all the loose dye. let the pieces dry, then put it back together.

I was thinking of doing a dye batch myself this weekend just for giggles.

So, no paint needed? Cool!

I see on their website colors such as "Denim Blue 36" and "Navy Blue 30". Which one would be the closest match to make a 1985 Cobra S.N.A.K.E.?

And, does someone knows if the "Scarlet 5" color would make me a great Action force S.N.A.K.E.?

Thanks people!

SNAKES don't take dye well. Use paint - or just buy one.

As for Black Ice. Some parts were CASTED black.
All official Black Ice figures came with a file card, and a number on the figures foot from 1 to 30 to avoid a slew of fakes out there. (There's more fakes than you'd think)

I'm maybe a little bit off topic, but what are the criteria that make a part good or bad for dye? Its initial color, type of plastic, ...?

or just buy one.

Too much expensive for me...

I did a dye batch on Saturday. I even thru together most of a Black Ice figure (minus the body) just for giggles. Everything came out fine except for the hologram C.C. That plastic warps much faster then the normal stuff. BTW, make sure you keep the temp low on your stove. I'm talking like around 1 or 2 on the burner. I've warped a few pieces in the past because I had it set to high.

Also, I really found myself missing my strainer this weekend. I use the egg strainer to get the pieces out of the pot of black dye water. You'll also need some paper towels to put the pieces on and something to rise the pieces off when your finished. I found myself using one of those small strawberrie baskets for all my parts on the weekend. It was quick and easy.

A final note, pull the arms out half way and bend the elbow and shoulder joints to expose the plastic that was otherwise covered.
