IDW GIJOE #1 out today.
« on: January 14, 2009, 03:52:33 PM »

I just picked it up. Its written by Chuck Dixon who I've always been a fan of.

I like how they're starting fresh. I wasn't a huge follower of the Marvel stuff simply because I was too young to collect it on a regular basis and I found I was always struggling to figure out what was up. Though I liked what I had read back in the day anyway.

They have 3 covers but I just picked the first one. I don't buy multiples anymore.

It was $3.99. I'm a comic addict so I didn't even think to check.

Gotcha.  I picked up the Issue #0 and loved it.

Bought it today, just finished reading it. I was more excited by the Dixon story in issue #0 than what we got here. It felt like more happened in that prequel than in this, the first issue of the story. There are some things I like, some things I'll see how they play out, and some things I'm worried about. I like how guys like Dusty and Frostbite have jobs outside their element. I like Scarlett's role as XO of the Pit. I like the art. I like that Wraith may actually be in this comic, showing that IDW is willing to go for more than just the standard rosters.

I'm okay with she-Dialtone. I'm worried about how some of the B-list Joes are getting characterized. Beachhead is chatty and has no memory? Deep Six did not seem moody or anti-social. Dusty came off condescending. Reboots work best, in my opinion, when the characters are recognizable even if their backstories and relations have been cleaned.

At this point my main worry is that not much happened. Think back to how much we saw and learnt in Marvel GI Joe #1. This was okay, but it was no Lady Doomsday.

I agree with Scramble.
I'm not a big fan of changing established characters like Dialtone and such or creating different persona's for them.  I understand that IDW is taking a different approach but is using basically the same flavour as previous incarnations of GIJoe so to change characters that have been around for 25 years is a little hard for me to accept.  Change their history a bit and the continuity but not the established characters.

They made Starbuck a female on Battlestar and I think it turned out better then fine. I remember when the fans found out and they all freaked out but she's such a great character now. Far superior then the original I think. Though Dialtone is hardly Starbuck. I think it'll turn out okay. They might have something planned for her.

She's a new character.  She just happens to have Dialtone's codename.  I guess they didn't want to make up a new one for her.

I read the issue.  Wasn't impressed.

I just hope this doesn't muck with our chances of a proper 86 Dialtone remake.

What I'm really thrilled about is the upcoming origin series by Larry Hama.

Actually, I'm really interested in the Cobra series. Chuckles was a bigger player in the Marvel Joe series than people tend to remember, especially in Special Missions, so it is great to have him as a point of view character in Cobra. If they handle the series right, take their time and have Chuckles slowly climb the ranks, it could be the most original GI Joe series since the original run ended.
