G.I. Joe - New Details About 'G.I. Joe: The Movie' Include Word of a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack

More is also revealed about widescreen vs. full-screen versions of the production

Early last month we passed along word that Shout! Factory was gearing up for a DVD and high-def Blu-ray Disc release of 1987's direct-to-video production "G.I. Joe: The Movie. We soon followed up with the specific release date - July 27th - as well as a look at the package art for both versions (seen again below).

Now Shout! has settled one of the questions that fans have been asking: would the releases would stick to the broadcast-and-VHS aspect ration of full frame for this new release, or go back to the as-originally-intended widescreen aspect ratio for a production which was originally meant to be seen in theaters? Yesterday Shout!'s producer for this title, Brian Ward, posted the answer at Shout!'s official message board. The solution he described says this: "The Blu-ray release will be a BD/DVD combo. The BD will carry both widescreen and fullframe versions of the movie. The DVD will only have the original fullframe."

So the only Blu-ray release of G.I. Joe: The Movie is now targeted to come with a second disc, the DVD version of the production (Ward clarifies that the BD disc has the widescreen version, and the separate DVD disc contains the full-screen version). Amazon's pre-order listing has been updated to reflect this change to a combo pack, by the way. Ward also went on to mention that he isn't allowed to speak about bonus material yet, but that "The movie itself, though, has definitely been remastered in HD." He further comments about the DVDs and BDs for this title that "Sadly, neither is captioned or subtitled" (more about the reasons for this can be found in earlier posts made by him at the same discussion thread). Further details, including a complete list of extras, should be available soon, so stay tuned!

Thanks for the info.  I already have the movie on dvd from a few years back.  However, having the widescreen would be nice and the extras.  I just don't have a blu-ray player!

I'm in the same boat as I would love the Blu-ray version but I do not have a Blu-ray player.  My TV at home is only a 480i

The widescreen Transformers DVD actually had less of the original film on it than the 4:3 version. They just chopped the top and bottom to make it "wide" for theatres.

It is probably the same case for G.I. Joe.

That being said, I'll still end up buying it because I am a fanboy who is easily separated from his dollars.

More importantly... when is Resolute going to get a Blu-Ray release?

If that's the case then no worries.  I won't need a blu-ray player.  I would still be interested in what extras there'll be.
