Title: Sports torture
Post by: olyeller01 on September 27, 2009, 04:26:32 PM
Watching my Houston Texans snatch defeat from the jaws of certain victory again today has me in a melancholy mood.

Being a Houston sports fan is a tough gig.  Houston teams have a long history of sports torture.  The Oilers losing those AFC Championships to the Steelers, and then the Comeback by Buffalo.  The Astros losing the NLCS after a sure chance to wrap it up, and more recently being swept in the Series.  Now the Texans and their continuing ineptitude.  Only the Rockets gave us any glory, and that was a brief run of just two years.

At least the Cougars won last night though.

Share your sports torture stories.

This is just too easy for a Toronto Maple Leafs fan.

having grown up in Edmonton back in the 80's with Gretzky, Messier, Kurri, Coffee etc. it was pure torture moving to Winnipeg and half to hear about the Jets. In fact I stopped watching Hockey by the end of '92. Then the Jets left and now Winnipeg doesn't have an NHL team yet people here just can't let them go.

Also the entire MLB is torture, please take it off tv.

edit: oops how could I forget the Bombers, they are absoulte garbage this year. In fact I heard there was a new rule: If you lose to the Bombers your kicked out of the league. (I'm speaking CFL for those who might not know what I'm talking about.)

i second that. 42 years is a long time, but the owner has no need for a good team, when us fans still sell him out every year, and for the next 3 years is the minimum wait list for season tickets, crazy.

At least the Leafs have won the Cup before, even if it was 42 years ago.  The 'Stros have been in existence for 47, and have only made the World Series once, losing it of course.  The Texans have only been around 7 years but have not even made the playoffs in that time, while the previous two expansion NFL teams (Panthers and Jaguars) both made it to the conference championship game by their second years.  The Rockets won in '94 & '95 of course but haven't been back to the Finals since.

Hopefully the NHL will get smart and let Phoenix (hockey in the desert?  Seriously?) go back to Canada where they belong.

I have to agree, Houston has had a tough time with winning sports championships.  But the Houston Dynamo of MLS has won championships recently, even though I considered the MLS to be minor league soccer in comparison to European leagues.

And if Michael Jordan didn't decide to retire and play baseball for two years, I don't think the Rockets would have won those two championships.

If run down the teams I follow:

MLB: Toronto Blue Jays:  Won two World Series in my life time. In 2009, the Blue Jays are average at best.  The problem is that they are stuck in a division with the Yankees and Red Soxs.  MLB needs a salary cap as I am sick and tired of the Yankees buying players and ruining small market teams.

NFL: Pittsburgh Steelers:  Won four Super Bowls in my life time and lost one to the Cowgirls (that one still ticks me off).  The first two don't count as I was 3 and 4 years old.  Can't complain with the ride I have had with the Steelers.  Although yesterdays lost to the Bungals was a real kick in the nuts in terms of repeating this year.

CFL: Toronto Argonauts: 5 Grey cup wins and 7 Grey appearances in total in my lifetime.  Just like all the Toronto sports team, the Argos just suck right now in 2009.

NBA: Toronto Raptors: 0 is the number of championships won.  This team has been basically a joke.  Players like Stoudamire, McGrady and Carter could not wait to get out of here.  Yes, Toronto is cold in the winter compared to the ghetto but come on.  At least with the recent influx of international players, maybe, just maybe this team will become stable down the road. In 2009, the Raptors have re-loaded their team after a crappy 2008 season.

NHL: Toronto Maple Leafs:  0 is number of Stanley Cups they have won in my life time. Like what other Leaf fans have mentioned, the ownership is biggest reason why this team spins it's wheels, all thanks to the biggest pile of shit named Harold Ballard.  He started this mess.  Other owners tried to win by their philosophy was flawed. They though by just getting into the playoffs (like the 7 or 8 seed), you have shot a winning the cup.  Please.  You need a top 4 team to have real shot. In 2009, the Leafs are re-building and it's about time.

The only few highlights was that the Leafs were oh so so close in 1993.  But that freaking ice chicken called Wayne Gretzky and his high stick, that was witnessed by the ref and not called, cost the Leafs a shot of reaching the finals.  And there was another year that the Leafs had the Devils on the ropes until Tie Dummy cheap shotted a Devils player.  Momentum swung towards the Devils after that.

At least I watched two Stanley Cup victory runs by Mario Lemieux and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the early 1990s.  Mario has and always will be my favorite.  Hence, I follow the Penguins as well, including to this day as Mario now owns the team.

Other:  Euro Cup 2004:  Greece wins it all.  I was at the Joe convention in Orlando went they won it all.  I realized down there that ESPN not the world wide leader in sports, like they claim.  Losers couldn't show one F@*&^ing clip of the game.

Overall, Toronto is quickly getting the name city of losers.  This crap has to stop.

I used to watch hockey all the time, but the last game i officially watched was, Calgary vs Tampa for the cup, and i remember getting quite mad at the ref for disallowing the cup winning goal by Ingla, because the Tampa coach said the puck was kicked in.
if you watch the replay, you will see that Ingla took his shot. and hit a Tampa players skate, as the player was trying to block the shot, and the puck went in, ricochet maybe, but definitely not a kick.

so after that, and the lock out, and morons like ballard, i couldn't be bothered getting back into it.

Like many Americans, I am not too much for soccer.  And you're probably right about the MLS.

And AHEM, everyone seems to forget that Jordan came back midway through the '95 season.  And the Bulls lost to the same Orlando Magic team in the Eastern Conference semis that the Rockets SWEPT out of the Finals.  So, yeah, there ya go on that one.

Buffalo seems to only do it in Base Ball (Bisons) and Lacrosse(Bandits)   Trust me I'm a long time Bills and Sabres fan.  I feel your pain.

FYI: when looking at professional Football (Soccer) in England you first have the Premier League which contains the majority of teams that are known outside of Europe (Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal). Under that is "The Football League" containing the Championship, League 1 and League 2.

The MLS if you were to compare it to English soccer is about equal with the Championship, while the USL-1 is equal to League 1.

Being In Vancouver, I follow the Canucks but they are a team designed to break hearts, every time they get close enough to pull everything off, they fall short. But that is still better than the BC Lions that either win the Grey Cup or stick up the season. The Canadians who dropped from Triple A ball to single A. And lets not forget the the NBA screwing us over in a deal that even they no admit was a mistake and they should have left the Grizzlies here where there were more people in the stands on a bad night than they currently pull on a good night. (Plus it would have helped the Sonics stay in Seattle as well)

Plus Vancouver has a wonderful history of piggy-backing on Seattles teams so to the Seahawks, Mariners, and such... Thanks for nothing.

LMAO FEEL my pain?  One of your teams caused a majority of it!  35-3, anyone?  I can STILL hear my dad swearing at the TV from that one.  I'm talking about the Bills' comeback for the uninitiated.

Then again, considering Brett Hull's goal/no goal, maybe we're even.

He only played 17 regular season games when he came back in 1995.  There is no way he was at his best by missing most of the season.   Jordan was thee most dominant player I have ever watched in the NBA.

It still doesn't take away from the Rockets championship.  It's like Patriot fans telling Steelers nation that they didn't have the Pats when they won Super Bowls XL and XLIII.  Bite me.  The only way they could beat the Steelers was to cheat in the first place aka spygate.

Hmmm. While I will agree that Jordan was the best I have to acknowledge that he also gets a lot of calls because he's MJ. All the greats do and that kind of is bs.  That's my gripe with the NBA.
