Title: Price increase for figures in Canada.
Post by: morgardee on February 12, 2012, 07:59:38 AM
All the talk of figure costs going up has begun:

This just means I'll be buying more Joes from Hal.

It's the same for MU.  Interesting though is that SW has stayed at 9.93 - only a penny more.........

Like I said in the Quebec thread, what's the point of rising the prices when you have nothing to sell?
People didn't buy that lonely Blowtorch for $8, what makes them think that he'll go for $10.77?
They should wait for a new assortment before rising the price.

Maybe not all Walmart stores carry Joes, and the few that still do, are just following a price adjustment call from their regional head office. It has happened before. But I agree that it comes out as bad timing, especially with the movie toys just around the corner.

They should have waited for the movie toys to change the price.
I think it would be easier to swallow for the general public to see new toys for a new movie at a new price.
Oh so many new things. ;D

Saw that price hike in my neck of the woods too, don't like it either.
Its in anticipation of the movie toys, no doubt and it means we'll be paying more for less.

Until all of it goes on discount in a year.....

The price jump was drastic, but I did pay $9.99 for a lot of my ROC figures.  Since I bought most of my POC/30th stuff from Hal, I never paid attention to what was on the shelf (when it was there) and when I did buy Jungle Viper, Recondo, Zartan, Cobra Commander, etc when they first came out I paid $9.97.  I just think of it as an 80ยข price increase, that we waited almost 2 years to get.

Poor guys. Those figs are still $6.97 (American) at Wally-World down here.  I bet they go up by the time the movie stuff comes out though.

That price won't be an issue until we actually have stuff to buy which probably will be the new movie merchandise.

I've heard it mentioned that hasbro has to pay royalties to paramount for doing the movie figures. This seems so back asswards to me. I don't get how these movie deals work, but doesn't paramount pay hasbro to use their brand to make it into a movie? At the very least hasbro OWNS the property, so why should they be paying royalties out?

In a sense it kinda should work out even. Paramount gets to use a bankable franchise to put out a movie and make money. Hasbro, in turn, gets to pump out toys with the movie as a multi-million $ commercial, and therefore they make money. I don't know how much money is to be made on either side of the equation though and who actually stands to benefit most. But either way, this royalties business just seems like an excuse to raise figure prices.

Bruce Willis and Dwayne Johnson are both bankable stars and both are paid fees for the licensing of their likenesses. Add to it the obligatory fees also paid to their co-stars that also appear in toy form and there's a considerable added expense. We are talking likely amounts in the millions of dollars here.
Paramount's cut in this is probably less than people are assuming, and its likely NOT royalties, but other costs and such. They are handling distribution of the film, and marketing.....and since the film is their bailiwick, they stand to lose if the thing bombs, moreso than Hasbro does. Hasbro won't lose money on this movie because they can utilize it in many ways over time.
Don't forget that Hasbro has its own network (and its own studio) now--the HUB--that can broadcast their live-action properties just as much as their cartoons. This movie is nothing more than a money-making "scheme"--like all movies-based on toylines are--its an extension of a toy-based TV series concept, essentially a 2hr long commercial for the toys.
The goal here has been to make money all along, so yeah........raising prices is going to be a natural part of that effort.

On a related note or not, the price of food, the cost of life, and gas has also gone up in general. It was perhaps only a matter of time that the price of toys would all follow the same kind of trend, who knows.

Which Shadow?

Storm Shadow?
Shadow Tracker?
Shadow Viper?
or Shadow Strike?

So many guys in Cobra using the name "Shadow" it makes the name "Dave" sound unique.   ;)

I just saw the first wave of the 30th at WalMart....so there is some new products.

As I said in the Quebec thread, it should not be suprising as TRU and Zellers have been selling joes for $9.99 for quite some time. Wal-Mart just finally caught up. Looks like figures will be $10.99 at TRU and Zellers. $1 increase really...still a shock to see something go from $7.92 to $10.77.

But the reality is the price of toys and action figures will continue to go up. Eventually you reach a breaking point for parents and collectors where that's the difference between buying or not.

no, Lamont Cranston AKA The Shadow. the old pulp hero, played in a movie from the 90s by Alec Bladwin.

The new price is all about the movie figures and licensing.  If the price were to go up again when the movie figures came out, I would be floored - and waiting for sales.

Corporate greed.  It is not like the price of oil has shot up in the past year.

Maybe one thing to consider for those who strictly resfrain from buying the product when it's first released, especially when they love what they see, and eagerly await for it to go on clearance: Maybe Hasbro could be getting less orders from stores compared to the previous years, due to poor sales (by this, meaning less profits). So assuming that less product would be out there from now on, that, and other factors, could justify in part the the price adjustments. No corporate greed necessarily. If kids or parents stop buying joes because of a price tag they deem no longer reasonable, then GI joe might litteraly end up either a thing of the past, or a Hasbro direct line much like the MOTU Matty Club figures. But if the latter happens, figures will not be 12$ anymore I can guarrantee you that. You will start paying prices that are little closer to what the Collector's Club prices are, plus shipping, and duties. But will it ever come down to that point? "Who knows?".... ::)

I seriously am suffering from a fat finger syndrome and I can't stop pressing on "quote" mistaking it for the "modify" command. I will seriously need to have this problem fixed  :-[

The way Joes are distributed, people should grab what they want when they see it, because the stores might only get one case.
That or they'll only have access to a certain assortment that will come back again and again... and again.

Clearance is good for custom fodders and army building.

Not a chance. The concept is generic enough that it can just be re-branded and repackaged over and over until something sticks. It's been tried with the Adventure Team, Super Joe, ARAH, Extreme, Sigma 6 and to a lesser extent Spy Troops/Valour vs. Venom.

There will always be G.I. Joe on store shelves. It just may not resemble the Joe we all know and love.

Ah yes, old radio theatre. I love it! The Shadow, Harry Lime, Box 13, x minus 1, sherlock holmes...

Did you know many of these shows are in the public domain and are available for free (and legal) download here:
