Title: surviving...
Post by: Agent_Loop on April 05, 2005, 11:20:43 AM
Man...I don't know how to start this thread, but to say that last week I was diagnosed with testicular cancer and I'll be going in for surgery tomorrow.
I've been thinking positive about it and am pretty much prepared. I hope to make a very speedy recovery so I can gurran-damn-tee that I will make it to the Joe Meet on the 23rd...besides, the doctor said it'll only take a few days to recover. Just pray for me that this cancer hasn't spread. :|

I hope the surgery goes well. This is shock considering your not that old compared to most of us.

How did still come about? I haven't gone to the doctors in a while.

That's some crazy news to receive loopster. For something like this to happen for a guy in his 20's is quite a shock as pete said. Stay strong. I hope all goes well and speedy recovery for you man.

Loop,

I had a friend with testicular cancer. His grew in an irregular way, so when they took x-rays it looked small, but it was actually growing straight out towards where the x-rays were being taken. So it was past the early stages of growth when they opperated. He made a complete recovery.

Good luck with the surgery, Loop, and stay strong. Everything will be all right.

We've obviously never met, but I offer you my best wishes. I too had to go through the hospital system for a problem with my heart, and so far *knock on wood*, everything seems to be better.  I'm sure you'll be in good hands and wish you a speedy recovery...

chris.

If Tom Green can geat it, you can.

What a bummer, and I have to agree with Pete, it really is hard to think of young people getting sick. - disease and illness is for the old.

Thanks for the support, guys.
Well, as to how this came about, I think it all started with a skin irritation since last summer (2004). There might have been a swelling since last fall, but it didn't really bother, or it was not noticeable. But I started to notice a size difference in January. I figured, 'maybe this has happened before...maybe it's just collecting fluids or something...maybe it's just a phase and it'll go away.' Last month, it felt like a hard-boiled egg and I had trouble sleeping because of it. It was only Easter Saturday did I decide to go to a walk-in clinic and the e.r. in the hospital. Both doctors weren't sure what it was, so I was scheduled for an ultrasound. I went to my regular physician and he told me the readings of the ultrasound. It was definitely a tumour.  He gave me the worst case scenario telling me it could be cancer, then talked about the procedures in treating it. Then he forwarded me to a special urologist. It was then that I was told it is cancer, and then he scheduled me for blood tests, ct scans, and a pre-surgery check-up (within four days) before my surgery. I'm so freakin' lucky that I wasn't put in a three-month waiting list and that I am being treated almost two weeks after I decided to do something about it.

Testicular cancer can happen to any man between 20-40, which puts me right in that category.  This is a good lesson that this cancer without any causes can happen to any one.  I'm gonna make sure to get a physical at least once a year after this is all done.

I really need to get out here more.

Sorry to hear about this Loop. I can only offer the same as everyone else out here. It takes balls (no pun intended) to come right out and tell folks what is going on in your life.

I admire you for that. I don't think I'd of done the same.

You're a great guy Jason, and I know you'll get through this without any problems.

Best Wishes 'Loo-bot'
Mike

Sorry to hear, and good luck.

I just had a physical 2 days ago and my doctor told me I should be doing self examinations in the shower with some soapy water.  You should feel for any lumps.

It really only takes a couple of minutes, and this is totally preventable.

I and every other guy should really take the time to do it.

The surgery went well, and fast.
It didn't seem as dramatic as ER...very casual and mundane. I had to walk to my operating room/bed, which I thought I'd be wheeled-in like the patients in ER. All I could remember was the anesthetic injection, me asking them, "How long would it take the drug to kick in?", and them answering, "Only a few seconds." I blinked and woke up about three hours after the surgery in another room, with an ice-pack over the 3" scar on my pelvis. Another hour later, I was discharged and wheeled out of the hospital. So I've been recovering at home ever since, watching my Superman cartoons on dvd and playing Smackdown on ps2. There's been a progression each day: day one (Wednesday after the surgery) - vomited all that anesthetics, day two (Thursday)- back to eating solids, and day three (Friday) - the cut has finally stopped bleeding, I think. In the next week, my goal is to stop walking like a sick old Gary Busey.
Again, thanks for your kind thoughts and I will guaran-damn-tee to see you guys again at the meet. It's awesome to have friends like you guys!

I just read the post and I'm sorry to hear about what your going through.  I myself have been battling the big C since last July its a scary thing to have to go through.  Stay optimistic technology in this field has come a long way.  Keep asking questions no matter how unimportant you thing they are and use the support of loved ones and friend.  You would be surprised how many people do care and are willing to help you through this.  Don't be afraid to ask for help and don't think you have to do it alone.  It took a lot of courage posting it and it's great to see the support everyone is giving.  Stay strong Loop.  We're thinking of you.
