General Joe Talk / Re: GI JOE AT DOLLORAMA

For $3 each, there's some decent army builders in Wave 1, and decent-enough kitbashing material.

Steering this away from the doom&gloom I posted earlier, I think there's enough to speak of with these figures for the price.
I'm using the Marauder John weapons to give whatever I find some variety, and I might take up Morgardee's example of some paint tweeks too--as what he did looks really nice.
But I've got to take a looksee and discover what they have on hand at my local store, first.

GI Joe / MLP:FiM cross over. It's the only option.

Let THAT sink in for a minute....

God help us all.

Alas, as insane as that idea sounds, it's not that insane. The Angry Birds would probably provide a bigger audience.

And I do apologize to everyone for the morbid post.
We can feed on false hopes, we can buy into delusions........we can throw up our hands and give up..........but at least knowing what the score MIGHT be gives everyone interested some perspective regardless of the outcome.

Here's hoping Toy Fair can resurrect our hope!

I wouldn't expect much or ANYTHING GIJOE at Toyfair. Or at the NYCC a month later.

There MIGHT be something solid announced at Joe con.

This is what the toy industry insiders I know have relayed to me:

No-one is interested in GIJOE.

That has to sink in for a minute.
Apparently, Hasbro has laid out all kinds of plans and exclusives for the 50th, and all the major retailers have sniffed at them.  Rejected them cold.
There might be ONE retailer interested in A exclusive......singular, in both respects.
You can blame Paramount, for delaying the movie.......which really screwed things up. Retailers were left with all kinds of stock leftover, and little of it was moving, and because of that, they are not interested in anything new beyond their last orders for Retaliation stuff. The sell-through period for merch attached to the movie and DVD is still in effect for most of 2014, so retailers are not interested in supporting a separate promotion that is not movie-related.

That it's the brand's 50th anniversary means NOTHING to them.
It sells so little, holds so little shelf space that if GIJOE went away, no-one would notice. Or care.

Except GIJOE collectors and fans, and we amount to the fly on the elephant's ass---to famously quote a former GIJOE brand manager.
Action figure brands in the industry are all in disarray. Marvel toys are NOT selling and Iron Man 2 toys were massively over-produced and ordered. Many retailers still have huge amounts in their systems when the third Iron Man movie came out......and Hasbro had promised them that all the IM, Captain America and Thor toys they were choking on would sell when Avengers came out.

That didn't happen.
And the retailers called Hasbro on it.

Consequently, anything else that ANYONE else is offering the stores gets a wary eyeball looking at it. It's affected the entire industry. Movie tie-ins mean nothing any more......the consumer-base just isn't interested in them, and retailers have been burned too many times. The days of old with a massive toy brand launch for a movie.......are dead and gone now.

Okay, so with all that in mind.......I am the lone voice, probably the only voice you have heard anything from yet on this matter.
Don't take my word for it.
I am not an insider, I am just a messenger.
My source is a long-time on-line acquaintance who is an insider, and his comments ( which I have relayed) cane be found on a Facebook group set up by fans to discuss Hasbro toys). I can direct the curious to the actual group if anyone wishes. You can then contact the fellow personally to verify or satisfy his bonafides.

Otherwise, what to do??

Wait a month for Toy Fair in February--it happens around Valentine's day.  Actually previews should slip the week just prior. If ANYTHING is coming, it'll appear then. Hasbro may be playing this very close to the vest......( we hope), and MAY have something to roll out then. There may be a retailer, or retailers interested in carrying stuff. Might still happen.

If it does NOT happen at Toy Fair, then don't expect anything at NYCC.  And Joe Con will be the last swing at bat for a while.

After that, GIJOE movies 3&4 WILL be made.....unless 3 tanks horribly. SOME toys will roll out in concert with the movies, but if there's no reveal at Toy Fair then GIJOE is done as a perennial line for the foreseeable future. It'll be an event line, coinciding with movies ( or TV shows) only.

The only other hope here is for the Collector club to continue with its semi-kitbashed product.
 That is all there is.

General Joe Talk / Re: What Joe stuff did you get for Christmas?
« on: January 08, 2014, 09:11:59 PM »
No Joes here this year, but I got other toys.

S.H.Monsterarts Mechagodzilla 2 Kiryu
Wolverine Legends  6" Sabretooth, Emma Frost and Cyclops, so I can build Puck.
Star Wars  6" Black Series, Luke, R2 and Boba Fett.
Picked up the 18" NECA '66 Batman figure a few days later, with a gift card and a store discount.

So, it was a good toy Christmas, but not a Joe toy Christmas.

Ahh thank you arrow. so I'm. not alone ib collecting both:) i also collect the 8' sigma line as well. and your definitely rigght about the vehicle thing as well. i have been wanting to fashion a remote control jeep willys for my 1/6 scale figures . but the price tag on that is pretty preposterous .
There's forums that can direct you on how-to's and purchasable sources, so the price tags may not always be unreasonable.

I collect both, and have always collected both (as an adult). I've got about 500 12" figures--Hasbro, 21C, all brands, and about an equal number of 4" 25th Ann and recent Joes.
I bemusedly note the segregation that many collectors put in place regarding both scales, and the denigration that some fling at the other.
Both scales have their charm and appeal, both have seen advances........both scales have their dumb stuff,  and their black sheep.

I like the detail, and the articulation, and the cool-factor in the looks of certain figures.
I used to be big on vehicles, but space limitations have nixed collecting them. I don't collect the very-high end 12" stuff now, because the cost works against the fragility of the parts. I want something with a bit or durability to it, and a bit of "look"--and frankly the very modern "everything-is-Neptune-Spear" is boring as hell.
The price of some of these current figures is now greater than the cost of all-custom figures back when I started in the hobby.
Kitbashing is easier with the 12" scale, but no less fun in the 4" size--and the after-market products to enhance either scale are quite good.

General Joe Talk / Re: G.I. Joe 2014 Convention Set: Zombie Hunters
« on: December 16, 2013, 02:11:14 PM »
I'm not a zombie fan per se, either.....but I really dug the Zombie-Viper figure from a year ago, and I was quite intrigued by the proposed all-zombie wave that was shown .....was it at Joe Con??
It's a good topical theme to do something with staid characters. Pursuit of COBRA was the same thing, placing various characters into different environments, but after that.........really what direction is there to go in that is really interesting or colourful?? Dinosaurs? Rebellious robots?  Aliens???
Zombies is it, I guess.

Oh, and it was just announced this afternoon by the Club that the 4" Joe Colton figure WILL be available outside of the 12" set, just lacking the stand and backdrop.

The 12" Convention set DOES have a 4" figure included in it.
It's got a 12" Green Beret in tiger stripe, a 12" Adventure team figure in a more nondescript outfit, and a 4" Joe Colton figure to cover the major eras of GIJOE over the last 50 years. Kind of an interesting ( and respectful) approach to things.

you gotta be f***in' s****in' me! the 50th anniversary year and they do THIS?! The hell planet are they living on?!
The 50th Anniversary year ties into the 12" classic Military Joes, moreso than the 4" version of G.I.Joe.
The 4" scale really isn't "celebrating" anything in 2014, so the convention set doesn't necessarily have to reflect the anniversary theme.

General Joe Talk / Marauder John Kickstarter Project Series 7
« on: December 11, 2013, 05:31:22 PM »
Not a GIJOE item per se, but stuff that definitely works with Joes:
Marauder John's Kickstarter project Series 7 weapons set.

I participated in this several months ago, and MJ has been delivering the results over the past month. The Kickstarter was to fund the production of the latest series of weapons, adding to the arsenal that they offer.

There were two projects, one run after the other to add some extras at the same time. I participated in both.  I just recently got the last of the items from the project, and had also bought an additional two sets. I initially thought I wasn't got to get all that much, but I ended up receiving a LOT more than I expected out of the Kickstarter project. I feel I was "very well taken care of "--a testament to Marauder John's commitment to customer service, and just sweetening the deal.

Now....in a word, these things are OUTSTANDING.

Incredibly detailed, FUNCTIONAL parts, and add-ons like optics. And they have THREE paint variants they produced for the project: unpainted black cast, gun-metal with realistic black/silver/green apps, and a desert tan app that is exclusive only to the project(for now). The rest are currently offered on their site.

Ammo mags can be pulled out, stocks on several weapons are folding/collapsible, optics and accessories such as grips can be swapped via peg holes. These things are 1/18th scale and some parts are TINY! Yet the detail and functionality are there. The stuff is made out of ABS plastic, and the tolerances for these things are VERY tight. They can be a bit fiddly and fussy, but they are not super fragile.
There's some clever design work some items, such as how they've managed sliding stocks, and things like positionable grab-handles.

Here's the thing though...they are not just new and different weapons to add to what you have....some replicate already existing weapons ( such as the GIJOE XLR laser rifle--albeit a bit smaller), but they do something perhaps more important: they can breathe some life back into your collection.

One of the oft-heard laments from many collectors is when a toy-line stops being produced, many collectors lose interest and choose to dispose of their collections. GIJOE is in a lull right now...and the future for the brand is not the brightest. The MJ guns really add some spark to the figures, they really give some variety to the looks and......well, they can get a collector's hands back onto the toys.
I think that is a good thing, a real benefit for the hobby, and something GIJOE desperately needs.
The various sets are reasonably priced, and they have a lot of different weapons to offer......and word is that they have even more ambitious stuff planned. Count me as a fan, and do check them out.
