Are the gi joe deSimone guides worth getting?
« on: January 04, 2010, 12:41:24 AM »

Hi I'm contemplating geting the gi joe deSimone guides ( volumes 1 and 2 ). They're about 24 pages each and showcases all complete loose 3 3/4 inch figures from the 1982-1994 era.

I already own the Ultimate guide to GI JOE but I'm looking into having a practical magazine format I can easily carry with me anywhere without the fear of damaging it: Are these worth getting you think ? What makes it different from Mark's guide ( text, format, pictures ) ?

Any help is appreciated, thanks guys.

I own them. They are not perfect but are a good size if you want to carry them with you if you go to a convention or just need to look something up quickly.

They are very far from perfect, the biggest problem being that figures are listed by date stamp in part one but by release date in part two.

I did a Guide to the Guides in an early issue of the Joe Canuck newsletter. Not sure which.

I almost forgot about the Tomart guides, those are great guides as well as they have many Hasbro flyer scans, if not all.

Hi Lj, I think they are pretty good since they are easier to carry around and the pictures are decent.

Yeah, I've built a small collection of guides over the years.

How much would you recommend or think one can spend on the 2 deSimone guides today?

And does anyone has spares they can sell or trade?

I would not expect to find them easily on the secondary market. Inside and out they are printed on glossy stock, so they are about as durable as a magazine without a cover. I know mine are pretty badly beaten up.  Basically they if a collector leaves the hobby, they would sooner throw out their raggety old guide than try to sell them. I got mine new for about $20 each, and although that feels steap I do think it was worth it in the long run. That's probably what you should expect to pay.

Hey lj,  somebody on ebay is selling them for $5.75.  just search for desimone and the seller should pop up.  That is the lowest price i have seen for the guide.

Thanks man, I actually bought them from the very same seller I believe about 3-4 days ago. Can't wait to get them in the mail, they came to 23CAD shipped and they're brand new.
