So............I'm looking to buy a Blue-Ray player.....
« on: April 02, 2011, 09:04:24 PM »

Hi Folks......

I'm soliciting opinions ( based on personal experiences) on good quality Blu-ray players.

Now, first thing I want to stipulate is that I do NOT want a PS3--I've had that recommended to me already by about 4 people, and I refuse to get one of those machines.
Reason being: I do not play console games, so the game system is useless to me.........and my kids prefer to play Xbox360. That and I simply do not want to buy a console platform and start all over with different ( or worse, the same) games. That and I don't want to pay $300 for the dang thing.

I don't care about 3D.
I have a LG 47" LCD HD flatscreen for the tv.
Receiver is a Shaw HD satellite receiver--we do NOT get cable. We get a wi-fi internet from a nearby tower.
I am NOT interested in Netflix, because our current wi-fi router is spotty when it comes to streaming.

I have a budget of about $200, or less ( preferably less) in mind for this.

Has anyone come across a reliable, easy to use, good quality Blu-ray player?

Thank you for any and all input.

I refuse to go to Blu-Ray... Mainly because I have a few hundred DVDs!

I would say stick with SONY since they invented Blu-Ray.  If not go with LG to match your TV.

Well, oddly enough, my wife is...........reluctant to go to blu-ray too and because we have about 500 DVDs. But I tell her that almost any blu-ray player will play DVDs-and will upgrade them to look a bit better as well. Hence my decision to go this route.

Exactly!  Get the Blu-ray to get the upgraded DVD playback.  Not sure if you can get a SONY Blu player for under 200 but they are the market leader.

That said, my LG BD370C has been great, easy to navigate menus.

My brother has a sony blu-ray player and nothing but trouble since he does not have it connected to the internet. Soooooo many updates to be done by burning to cd. I would recommend a PS3

Unless you want Blu-Rays now, you can buy DVD players that Upgrade the picture to 1080p for well under $100.

I have a LG blu-ray and the PS3.  I only use the LG to play DVDs.  PS3 is just for gaming.

I prefer to keep things simple, like back in the day when a cell phone was just a phone instead of the electronic crack they have become to many.

Well, PS3 *is* the best Bluray player

But you've said you don't want one.

To be truthful, the best bang for the buck is the Seiko Bluray player for $78 at walmart. Great little unit, can be made region free for DVD and Bluray, and can play divx files as well.

Highly recommend it. I bought 2 of them to replace my dvd players.

Last week I bought a LG Blu-Ray player at Walmart.  I paid $98 for it, this week it is on sale for $89 (they gave me the difference back).  The LG plays well so far (it stuttered on a Blu-Ray the other night).  I have 1300 DVD's in my collection, so the up-converting factor for DVD was the main attraction for me with my new TV.  I was reluctant to get Blu-Ray at first, but started buying them after I got my PS3.  I have noticed that at my local stores (ie: Walmart) DVD is getting rare.  They have a better Blu-Ray selection than DVD.
