Post by: latinjoe22 on September 03, 2010, 01:52:39 PM
Shoot, I almost forgot to post this as a reminder to everyone: the next Comicon is just around the corner next week!

Many guest will include fellow Gi joe contributors Herb Trimpe and Larry Hama.

Find out more by clicking on the link below:

http://www.montrealcomiccon.com/ (http://http://www.montrealcomiccon.com/)

I'll be going as an attendee to this one. So see you maybe!

I was planning on going on Saturday with a couple of fellow geeks (Non-Joe fans). Do we know if Mr. Hama will be signing autographs. I wouldn't mind bringing a few of my Joe comics for him to sign.

Huh, I didn't know Larry was going to be there.
I planned on going to see Tim Sale.

Perhaps we'll bump into eachother then. If you see a latin guy with a 2010 black canadian gi joe convention T-shirt, chances are it'll be me.

Dang it all, I forgot to make this thread!  You beat me to it again, man! ;D

I'll be there in costume; look for the Interplay-era Fallout Vault Dweller (the guy in blue with a big yellow "13" on his back).  I'll be doing interviews and taking photos for a comic-related forum I moderate, and I hope to get a chance to talk to Larry.  I'll see if he and Herb would be kind enough to sign the copy of Marvel Joe #1 that I won last time...  That'd be pretty sweet. :timbits:

I might just see if Herb can sign my Comic Pack version of issue 8.
He drew AND wrote that one, after all.

I'll be bringing 1 or 2 carded 25th figures for Larry Hama to sign, and I will keep my promise to Herb Trimpe to show him a little something I made. He signed a beat up Mobat tank I bought last time he was at the con, so this year I'm bringing something that will go along with it.

Last Comicon he was there, I had him autograph a VvV Comic book reissue of Gijoe #1. He signed it for free  :).

Herb Trimpe is really sweet and humble.  Over 2 cons, he signed a bunch of stuff for me (an issue of Backissue Magazine that had an article about him, Special Missions #1, some of my favourite Transformers covers that he drew, his first issue as the Transformers' artist, even al 4 issues of Order of Battle), all for free.  As for what's best, bring him something which is important to you that he did, like your favourite Special Missions issue.

I should also mention, to anyone attending: bring cash!  Most vendors only take cash at the con, but there are ATMs nearby.

I don't know that many conventions where vendors will take debit anyway...so it's safe to say to always bring cash to these kind of events, so that you may have an early and trouble-free start. There are always ATM's near a big convention, It is one of the usual site requirements of a convention/exhibition centre. Otherwise, the convention is in serious trouble and I don't think a successful organization would want this.

Hey, I know that, I was just putting it out there...  Some vendors do have credit card machines, I've noticed.  But yeah, it's mainly cash.

Yeah, so true!  ;D  BTW I just meant to add to what you said, and to state the obvious when it comes down to any convention, not trying to correct you or say you didn't know what you were advancing. You're actually a regular attendee, so I would never doubt that you know a big lot.

They changed it; no more sketches.  Now it's all about the costumes, which I find is better.  Mine's rather lame this time because I didn't have much time to work on it (literally 2 days), but it should be okay.  And my head won't be covered this time, so you'll recognize me!

That was some good costume you had there Snakes. Too bad I didn't have my camera I would've taken pictures with a bunch of costumed fellas.

I'll be going there for day two. My brother called me when the day was over to let me know that he wants to head there tomorrow so It'll be a chance for some brother connection. We also have a date with the Back to the Future Dollorian to have our picture taken.

This is was a bigger convention then the last two-day event. I must say I was impressed. The only thing I thought that it was missing? Why, me of course! (as a dealer that is)  But I like it this way better. Got to meet some artists I didn't even know existed and support them by purchasing some of their artwork and talk about their career experiences. All worth gold to me for a change.

I had a great time today and I was really glad to see you.  I looked all around the convention hall trying to find your table but I wasn't able to, so bumping into you on my way out was a treat.  I ran into a bunch of old friends from college and high school, too.  Good times.  Plus, I joked around with a guy in a Soldier from Team Fortress 2 costume.  Gaming costumers unite!  I didn't end up taking a photo of me in the DeLorian because I had spent more than I wanted to, but I probably should have, what with my costume and all.  If the Vault Dweller got his hands on a time machine, the Fallout Universe could have ended up really different!

I went to Larry and Herb's panel, visited their tables, asked them questions, and they signed some stuff for me.  I had both Larry and Herb sign my copy of Marvel G.I. Joe #1 for me.  Be right back, crossing something of my To Do While Alive list!

Larry Hama and Herb Trimpe were there, that's as real GI JOE as it gets to me.

Only 25th, POC, ROC that I saw... that's real GI JOE too no?  ;D

To add to that, yes 5h4rk, there are also more tables that carry Joes this time. And there was a lot of POC too which was great.

You still have sunday (today) to go check it out. It's 15$ to go in but it's worth it and the 20th Century FOX team is there, with the Back to the Future Dolorian, If that can help anyone reconsider to attend the event.

It was great. I had a great time. I had never been to one and was surprised by how many people there were. I arrived around 10:30 and stayed until about 3pm. Unfortunately, I didn't bump into any JoeCanuckers.

I got Mr Hama and Mr Trimpe to sign my copies of Special Missions #17 and 28 (My favorite issues). Mr Hama also signed my MoC 25th wave 1 Snake Eyes. He was sketching in between autographs and offered up them up at 20$ a piece. I'm now the proud owner of a one-of-a-kind Larry Hama Snake Eyes sketch. It's already framed. It looks great on my wall. My only regret is I should have asked for a Storm Shadow as well. Oh well, maybe next year.  :)

As Latinjoe22 and SnakeEyesOnAPlane mentionned there are lots of Joes for sale. I saw some Resolute packs at 40$ and lots of PoC. I picked up a wave 2 Dusty for 8$ from Toys on Fire. He had all of wave 1 and 2 singles and wave 2 Bravos (Fury, Vamp). He also had Alley-Vipers, but at 25$ each, I skipped them.  :'(

Non-Joe stuff, there is the Delorian from Back-to-the-Future. It isn't the original from the movie, it's a fan made replica but it's very authentic looking. I got to see Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) from Star Wars and got to talk to Brent Spiner (Data) from Star Trek TNG. They were signing autographs for 35$ a pop. Elvira was there as well. I swear, she looks exactly the same as she did 25 years ago.  :) Of course, there were a lot of costumes. The red Spartan (from Halo) and several Stormtroopers, a Snowtrooper and a Biker scout, Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader were particularly impressive.

I recommend it to anyone who hasn't gone yet. I'll be there next year for sure.

Hey OB, I arrived at 5pm which is why we totally missed eachother. I was supposed to come with the family but we delayed and in the end, I ended up showing up by myself.

Today is round two for me.

By the way, I saw a dealer or two that were carrying the new POC Mech suits, Snowcat and Vamp if it can interest anyone.

Real G.I. Joe, eh?  No, I didn't see any 12 stuff with life-like hair and beard.  Get off my lawn!  Back in my day, Kung Fu Grip used to mean something!

The DeLorean was fantastic.  The crowds were bigger than they ever were before.  Damn, I didn't see that boxed VAMP or I'd have bought it on sight.  Also, to all you fellow Clutch fans out there, I asked Larry what the future holds for Clutch, and he answered "#161."

Oh, and Elvira's still got it.

Thanks!  Clutch is my favourite Joe character, so I just had to ask.  What with him showing in IDW #11, I thought there might be a chance of him making an appearance.  I hopy Larry keeps Clutch oldschool - those 2 panels of him interacting with Scarlett in G.I. Joe: Declassified made that series for me! ;D

Neither; I was the Vault Dweller from the first Fallout video game.  Though I guess if he'd traveled back in time to before the war, he would just have found out that "war never changes." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkBNKa2KXZE (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkBNKa2KXZE)

And the coolest is that Herb Trimpe actually never got to draw this character in the GI joe comic book. So i asked him "could you please draw him as you would've if you had to draw him at the time". He was pleased to. Of course I brought my mint on card specimen so that he could use it as a specimen, I came prepared for my special request. And I didn't even have to tell him to make it funny, the guy has a natural sense of humour and I was happy that he made the character miss a mine, which shouldn't have happened according to the filecard that Larry Hama wrote, and I quote: "Lightfoot has elevated beeing careful to an artform...Lightfoot may take twice as long to clear an area, but at least you won't get any nasty surprises". Not true anymore for me!  ;D

Not true anymore for me!  ;D

Very nice.

How come you didn't ask Larry Hama to draw lightfoot for you instead?

Larry Hama didn't seem to give a bizwacks about Lightfoot when I showed him the figure....On the other hand, Mr. Trimpe was very honored to draw him for me and it showed.

I forgot that Larry drew a sketch of Snake Eyes . I bought it to have an authenticated souvenir from him but it wasn't much for the sketch itself. It's just Snake Eyes, everyone must have requested this to Larry Hama so many times. But now looking at the other books he signed for me, I don't need this as much as I though I would so I'll just give it to a personal friend of mine who collects comic book artwork and is not expecting it.

Was it that he didn't care to do it or didn't recall the character? Don't think Hama would turn down a request. He's done so many characters across so many lines, it's tough to remember them all....but you did have the fig as a reference.

Doesn't matter anymore. He didn't turn down the request either. I think he was just not having a good moment, and then all of a sudden this annoying geek (me) arrives with his blurry question and that probably didn't help his situation. I was just too excited to ask him about Lightfoot, and had great expectations for an answer. I can't remember what my question was anymore, but I recall that it came out clumsy, and I don't blame Mr. Hama if he didn't undertand at all what I may have been babbling about. I have a tremendous respect for him and the fact that he shaped the grounds for what the Real American Hero storylines are to this day. Guess that next time, I'll stick with asking him about Snake Eyes or Storm Shadow. But I'm not pondering over that. I didn't get the response I was expecting from Mr. Hama, but I guess again that unexpected are the only thing that one should expect at all times.

Mr. Trimpe's sketch did triumph over that very awkward moment. I paid more than 20 bucks for my sketch, but really, for a Lightfoot fan, this means everything to my world.

My souvenir of the moment is Mr. Trimpe handing me the paper for me to turn it around, and when I saw the sketch that he finished, I remember smiling and then exploding in laughter, and boy, I saw Mr. Trimpe show a big toothed smile in sign of gratitude. It took him a little over an hour with several interruptions to finish it, but the waiting was well worth it, as he managed to draw something he never drew before and accomplish it with style.

I know the feeling, latin joe!  One of the usual local artists who used to come to every con, Jose Holder, he would do all kinds of cool sketches for my friends and I.  He wouldn't even charge us for them... so I bought him some comics for him to use as reference and told him to keep them!  Over two cons, he drew me a Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow, and they're facing each other, so I'll have to frame the pictures and put them up on a wall.  I'd walk around, go through some bins, come back to chat with him and see how he was doing, and light up watching him drawn.  The creative process was really fun to watch.  Plus, it was his first time drawing Joe characters, and he thanked me for that opportunity. Felt good, man! ;D
