Ice Dagger Conversion Attempt.
« on: June 11, 2010, 01:26:19 AM »

I am about to start my largest conversion project to date.

While I personally haven't cared about the Ice Dagger to get one, I bought one on a whim seeing wal*mart is clearing them for $10. The plan is to use it as an update for the Red Shadow Hyena. While I'm not planning on altering it, I will be taking it apart to give it a better paint application.

Before I start however I am just wondering if anyone else has tried take one apart and if so, is there anything I should be careful with? (ie: I don't want to mess up the turret assembly.)

I'll try to update here in case anyone is interested, and/or has anything to comment on this project.

Has a bit more parts than I expected and as I tried to keep track of things while taking it apart it took a bit longer than I thought it would.

Initial painting will hopefully be tomorrow but if not it will need to wait until Tuesday or Wednesday I hope.

Quick question if anyone knows the history of the mold beyond it's usage as the Ice Dagger and Ice Sabre? when first looking the piece over I noticed the gray patch on the underside.

In disassemble, I found the mold contains housing of a battery case for 2 AA batteries. I can't find any thing in the info for the dagger or sabre that these were used. Was the base used for a different unit prior to the Ice Sabre?

Its possible it was developed during the Sound Attack line, as an addition then, but did not cost out for that line and was withheld  for a few years. That, or the plan was to have it feature a triggered sound effect when the turret pops up--again, something that probably did not cost out for them.
AFAIK, the vehicle mold was never used for anything else.

Right well, I say the result was a mixed bag with a positive end result.

The main top piece is plastic that didn't seem to like the paint i had on hand, so there are a few areas that aren't as good as they could be and the bay doors just didn't make me happy with the result, but in the end I felt it looked better without those anyways. Comments, thoughts, or reviews would be appreciated.

So while I may still do some tinkering before calling it complete, I present my Red Shadow Dagger Hyena Custom. (now to figure out what to do for Jackel)

Very nice work.  I like what you did with the cockpit.

Thanks, It was almost an after thought with the cockpit, right before I started reassembly.

I was looking at the dashboard and thought it might look better in gray before putting the display stickers on it. After doing that I decided with I still had the gray out to fix up the seat assembly. I'm glad I did as I think it improved things greatly.

D'oh! I must have missed this thread. I'm currently working on an Ice Dagger as well. I took mine all apart and have painted it. I should be putting it back together tonight. Probably won't get the stickers and such done for a few days.

Yours is black and red and looks very sharp.

Mine is Red and white. No idea how well mine will come out.

Mind if I piggy back on your thread when done?

Not at all, Morgardee. Double the daggers, double the fun.

And regardless how yours comes out, I hope it was as much fun for you as I had making mine.

I need help. I suck at spray paint work. It seems to crack on me. Am I doing it too close? Not waiting long enough? To much paint?

I'll post the pics of what I have but I'm going to by another and try again. I like most of the colours I picked and the way I taped it off except for the rear doors. I think it would look better white, not red. I also only did one coat of white paint around the windshield as I relaized that this one has faults. Also, the main spring that pushes up the gun doesn't work anymore. Again, too much paint I think.

That being said, here what I was trying to do:

Here is a close up of how bad my paint is:

The cracked paint form a distance looks like it was a diamond metal pattern and looks quite good plus it is a darker red then the front of the vehicle.  I think it looks good.
