Yearly CanJoeCon Discussion / Anyone wanna split a table at the Joe meet?
« on: January 08, 2008, 10:01:47 PM »
I know it's only $25 a table but I really must save as much money as possible (going back to school in September).  Plus, the more the merrier as far as dealers go right?

Anyone had experience as a dealer before?  How are people for haggling (is it even allowed)?  I want to make some money selling off excessive parts of my collection (e.g. post 1987 Joes, duplicates etc.) and I realize everyone's looking for deals but I don't want to sell stuff ridiculously cheap.  Any tips?  I've never sold at a toy show before and wouldn't mind hearing about your experiences.

Thanks!

General Joe Talk / Selling some Joes...some questions
« on: January 03, 2008, 09:22:56 PM »
Hi everyone!

Well, I finally decided some of my Joe collection is going to go. I need some extra $$$ for a post-grad certificate at college. I want to maximize my profit while still understanding that toys don't always draw a lot of cash. I don't have an eBay account, so I was thinking of craigslist and BST forums. Does anyone have experience with this stuff? Should I sell piece-by-piece or the entire collection? Any help is appreciated!

General Joe Talk / Removing screws
« on: December 23, 2007, 12:23:37 AM »
The metal T-bar/hook on my 83 Gung Ho snapped  :o, so I took one out of a junker fig to replace it.  Unfortunately, his right leg screw will not budge and it's slightly stripped.  I seem to recall reading a long time ago that a drop of oil might loosen up something like that.  Does anyone have any tips on how to get that screw out of there?  It's not rusted, just very tight.  Any help is appreciated!

Items Wanted / Dreadnoks Declassified #2

Anyone have this?  My local comic shop just got #3 in and never had #2, apparantly.

I've got some loose 200X MOTU figures and TF Alternators and loose Spy Troops/VvV/DTC new mold Joes for trade.  Also most of the 200X MOTU comic and GI Joe America's elite #0-21.  I'm not looking for tons for this stuff so it's probably a good way to get a large MOTU/Alts collection going if you were thinking about it.  I'm looking for 1982-1985 Joe stuff, most anything from the earlier ARAH era is of interest.  And mint/near-mint, complete Sega Dreamcast games.  I gotta run right now but if anyone's interested, I'll make a complete list of what I have and want when I get back.  If I don't make it to the meet tomorrow (due to not having a ride) and you're still interested, consider making a trip towards scenic Niagara Falls and maybe we can still do a trade.  I

General Joe Talk / elbow cracks
« on: August 01, 2006, 05:26:58 PM »
it's pretty common knowledge that vintage Joes can suffer from busted crotches and broken thumbs.  One thing that I don't see discussed often (if at all) is the little cracks that sometimes happen on the elbow joint of Joes (the thin plastic that surrounds the metal pin).  I've never seen this damage lead to a lower arm falling off.  But I do wonder if that's possible.  Some of my old Joes have the tiny crack in the elbow and I'm wondering if I should never ben their arm again just to be safe.  Any thoughts?  Also, what causes this damage?  Has the plastic shrunk a very small amount over 20 years, causing stress at that point?

Customs / Professor Appel
« on: July 22, 2006, 03:25:36 PM »
Can anyone recommend what head to use to make a Professor Appel custom?  I was thinking 1998 Brekhov ...the hair colour is wrong, but the face has some age in it.  All I want to do is put a new head on a Crimson Guard figure...I'm no good at painting or cutting.

Items Wanted / Wanted: 200X MOTU Ram Man & Teela
« on: July 20, 2006, 08:37:08 AM »
I want a 200X Ram Man (either one) and a Teela to complete my collection. I'd prefer MOC. I live in Canada and don't have Pay Pal. I'm looking for some reasonable prices on these figures.

If you're interested in trading, I have a MOC Snake Hunter He-Man (the one with the catapult net) and a ToyFare exclusive MIP Robotech Shadow Alpha (the transparent one). I have some loose Funskool G.I. Joes (the ones made in India) as well, if you're interested in those.

I'd also consider trading just my loose Snake Armour He-Man, but I'd want both Ram Man & Teela MOC for that. I don't know how rare he is anymore, but I really like the figure :)

General Joe Talk / Plastic crack
« on: July 14, 2006, 02:39:02 PM »
I usually put my collection in storage for the summer so the humidity doesn't go crazy on my Joes.  So while I was cleaning my collection today, I counted how many figures I have and I was a little shocked at the number - 210!  Now, this is probably small compared to some of the collecting lunatics here, but its shocking for me because last year I decided to streamline my collection.  I.E. not buy every single Joe thing released and just buy the "essentials"...so, basically, I consider 210 figures to be essential.

Anyone else here a Joe crackhead?

General Joe Talk / painted skin vs bare plastic
« on: July 14, 2006, 07:59:50 AM »
today while annually dusting my Joe collection, I was thinking I don't participate in discussing the hobby as much as I could, so starting now I will randomly bring up topics, no matter how trivial

Today's topic is painted skin vs bare plastic (specifically on heads):  which do you prefer?   I bring this up because most of what I've read in forums leans towards paint-hating.  I myself tend towards painted, especially with the random plastics Hasbro has used since 1997.  I find that it's difficult to make out the details of a Joe face on those figures with the pinkish, unpainted skin like many of the re-vintage Joes (most of this discussion refers to Caucasian Joes).   Something about how the light hits the plastic obscures the finer details.

Now, it does depend on the plastic used.  Some unpainted heads are fine.  These are the ones with the whiter, "harder"-looking plastic.  Perhaps a direct comparison will help.  If you have the 2000 Dialtone and the Tiger Force Dialtone, notice how the 2000 head is fine, and could almost pass for an original vintage head.  This is an example of the whiter, harder head (harder is just referring to the look; it's entirely possible that it is not actually harder).  Now the Tiger Force version has the pinkish, waxier-looking plastic.   On which figure is it easier to make out the details of the face?  IMO, it is the 2000 version.  The Tiger Force version just looks cheap and undetailed.  You can also compare TF Big Brawler's face with 2001 Low-Light; the same difference is there.

Regarding a painted face, as long as the applications are done right I think it is usually superior to an unpainted one.  The way paint reflects light makes it much easier to see the fine detail in the face (especially the newer comic-pack sculpts) - I don't know light-spectrum science, but it's almost as if bare plastic absorbs light and thus blurs the edges of shadows.  Or perhaps the shininess doesn't help things.  Take a look at the Crimson Guard Tomax/Xamot (the ones wearing the EE suits).  Notice how you can see the creases in his painted fingers from pretty much any angle.  The unpainted face, while better than the TF Dialtone, looks cheap and waxy in comparison.  I find that any of the repainted vintage figures, no matter how cool-looking or well-produced, will end up looking cheap with a pink-skinned, unpainted face.  In a way, the difference is like an unpainted model vs. a painted one...the paint will almost always look better, more complete and less cheap.

Any thoughts?
