Customs / NDK's Avalanche Viper Shock Troopers (AVST's)
« on: September 07, 2010, 09:00:36 PM »
The contest has been over for a while now so I might as well post my entry for those who missed it.  As usual any critiques are comments are very welcome!  Thanks.  Now that the Joe Canuck Lore is pretty ironed out now I guess I should mention anywhere is says Cobra Canadian Corp or something to that effect should be Cobra North.  And anything with Shiver can be omitted lol.  I think its time to make an ICE Queen custom.

File Card:
Avalanche Viper Shock Troopers (Or more commonly, Avalanche Viper or A.V.S.T) are the Canadian Cobra Corps's most elite unit.  They are Cobra soldiers recruited from Canada's multicultural population, and are harnessed for their diversity as well as the Canadian reputation as Shock Troopers.  Though they excel in cold weather combat, they are extremely well trained to fight in all of Canada's climates, be it the Tar Sands of Alberta, the Rocky mountains of BC, the frozen northern wildernesses, to the Urban jungles of Toronto and Montreal.  They are utilized as a special forces unit to capture or destroy targets, punch through enemy lines, or demoralizing enemy armies by inflicting horrendous casualties in hit and run strikes.  Their equipment varies trooper to trooper and is as unique as the various cultures each is from.  However the common piece of equipment they share is their "Gas Mask" style headgear (which has several variants, such as the Hard Shelled Urban style, or the "Hoodie" style for cold weather). Their headgear contains highly advanced systems to aid them in combat, such as Heads up display, communications suite, thermal imaging, and hostile environment protection. The A.V.S.T's have a fearsome reputation as deadly professionals who have never failed a mission.  Can anyone in Canada stop them?

Images:

History of the Avalanche Vipers and the Canadian Cobra Corps (long version):
Like much of the world, Canada is in battle against Cobra.  Its proximity to the U.S.A, always being known to produce elite soldiers and shock troopers, and its diversity (which makes any Cobra operative from there extremely valuable as they can be sent around the world) makes it extremely important for Cobra.  Cobra Commander chose Black Ice to create a Canadian Cobra Corps (CCC), however Black Ice had a very small pool of soldiers to work with.  Current Cobra Doctrine requires specialist Vipers to fulfill different roles, but with such a small group to start with training these in the traditional programs didn't make sense.  Furthermore, these soldiers would have to be able to fight in all the different climates of Canada (which is not solely Arctic despite popular misconception), from the Moderate rainy Vancouver, to the Rockies, to the Tar Sands, to the Arctic wilderness to the Urban streets of Toronto.  General run of the mill Viper or Blue shirt training wasn't going to cut it, Black Ice needed to harness the proven Canadian elite Shock Trooper reputation and streamline their training into one single training program to form an Elite unit that the CCC can be built from.  The answer was to create the Avalanche Viper Shock Trooper.  The A.V.S.T's are made up of only Canadian cobra soldiers and are intensively trained in all forms of combat and combat conditions, they can fight anywhere in any climate, though they still excel in the Arctic.  Their equipment they use are as diverse as the cultures of the soldiers that are in the Corps, save for one thing, their "Gas Mask" style headgear.  The A.V.S.T's masks are designed for hostile environments as well as house advanced HUD displays, communication equipment, and a Thermal Imaging mode for the Cold Weather.  These masks come in several variations (with more being added regularly) and it is common to see several of these variants in a single squad, the most common so far are the Urban and Cold Weather Variants.  This new Viper Corps quickly became one of the most terrifying forces in all of Cobra and had earned their reputation as Shock Troopers, and are regularly requested for operations around the world.  With the Avalanche Vipers now forming the base of the CCC, Black Ice and Shiver can now focus on supplementing the Corps with other Viper and Trooper types, as well as creating new trooper types and equipment such as the HATE tanks and their drivers, forming one of the deadliest fighting units in the world.  Can Canada produce any unit to combat them?

Notes:
-Snow serpents and Avalanche Vipers do not get along and they constantly are at odds with each other to be the premier Arctic trooper of choice by Cobra.
-Avalanche Vipers did not like the idea of other Viper units joining the Canadian Cobra Corps as they felt they could handle any job
-The A.V.S.T training centers are carefully hidden in the vast Arctic in Northern Canada.
-Though their forte is Cold Weather combat, A.V.S.T's can be used anywhere where Shock Troopers or special operations are needed.

Artistic notes:
-I wanted to allow for individuality in each trooper, every trooper could be different, yet at the same time have one similar thing in common, their gas mask style headgear, this also makes it wide open if anyone else wants to make their own custom A.V.S.Ts
-I wanted these troopers to look saturated in white. Yet retain the common Canadian Cobra color pallet of white, black and purple/blue.

Customs / NDK's 25th/ME Shiver 2.0
« on: September 01, 2010, 12:37:31 AM »
Had the idea for this for a little while, finally got off my ass and did it.  Sorry for the crappy pictures, I only have my cell phone cam right now, I will get better pics with a normal cam tomorrow.
Edit: new pics with better camera added
Shots with the good camera

my Shiver 1.0

My versions of Shiver always seem more and more armored  :-.  I went sort of away of the all black sleeves and made the armor pieces in black, works out well because I dont have the paint the joints so he is fully pose-able with no paint rub.  I have a small problem though with the knees, I dont have good tools to shave the knee joint down to straighten the leg so its slightly bent.  Im not sure if this should be Shiver (2.0) or **small spoiler** new Shiver or his replacement with a new name, like Windchill or Quiver, or something like that.  I even considered painting the Cobra North Blue/Purple in Red to show his change in affiliation but he just looks too much of a bad guy.**end spoiler**

Anyways I'm curious what you guys think, be blunt if you have to.  Also would like to know which of my Shivers you guys like better and why.  Thanks for looking! I promise to get cleaner pics soon.

Yearly CanJoeCon Discussion / Post Canadian Joe Con appreciation thread!
« on: August 07, 2010, 05:27:53 PM »
I have to say after being at both 2009 and 2010 cons that this Years con was a thousand times better then last years, it just "felt" different to me.  I had so much more fun and memories.  Chatting with folks in line, sharing thoughts and stories, meeting new people.  Meeting Larry Hama in person and having him sketch me a Lady Jaye, and then listening to his great Q and A.  The funny thing is he would go on these tangents but they were so interesting that you just followed along regardless, hes filled with thoughts and opinions and very willing to share them which made the session amazing.  Mark's session was different, but it was fun, Mark is such a fantastic public speaker you are entertained no matter what.  The vendors were really good this year, lots of cheap deals (some not but thats to be expected), and a far greater selection then last year, I walked the floor several times and found new stuff each time especially in the cheap bins.  The venue was also miles better then last years (no offense to Hamilton), the atmosphere was just far more "bright" and clean I guess the right word is.  I hope this year's con will continue with this kind of atmosphere and excitement in next years con and beyond.  I was honestly constantly smiling and had a giggly feeling and having a fantastic time and felt like a kid in a candy store.  Thanks for the best Con I have been to JoeCanuck staff, vendors, guests, and fellow boardies and attendees.

Customs / NDK's old customs
« on: May 24, 2010, 10:08:14 PM »
Here are a bunch of my old customs from oldest to newest.  Its kind of interesting seeing how I progressed with customizing (or not progress at all).  Also keep in mind that many of the early ones, there was very few figure parts to chose from, as 25th was only a few waves old.  Warning lots of pics, may take a while to load.

My very first one, I used clay rather then appoxy lol.  First of several of my "Alley Viper Razors" team.  Note that I added cobra red emblems to their visors, but these are old pics before I did it.

This is Street Sweeper, Machine gunner.

Off Topic / Heavy Rain
« on: May 23, 2010, 10:58:55 PM »
I just finished this last night and I am just wowed. Few games can touch you so emotionally and create a bond with you and the characters, and this does such a good job with that as well as setting atmosphere. Despite a few plot holes and crappy controls in certain sections(if you played it already all I can say is tunnels...), I consider this one of the best games I have ever played. Any one else played this yet? I hope when they make the movie, they use the same actors for the 4 protagonists. I now have a Heavy Rain oragami bird on my desk at work, complete with blood splotch on one of the legs
It's definatly not a game for everyone though, its not heavy in fast pace action or anything, its mainly for people who like to immerse themselves in story.

Just curious, do any of you collect this stuff?  I have a lot on order coming in, I was blown away at the detail of these toys and had to have them.  They will probably be taking over most of my collecting budget now since I am only picking and choosing bits and pieces of the new Joes these days.

they are pricey though, defiantly not for everyone.

Ontario / Markville TRU, Walmart and Winners (4/24/10)
« on: April 24, 2010, 05:11:07 PM »
Markville Winners had Charbroil, Paravipers, Blackcoat Rex for $6.99
They had a Kamakura but I took him.  I also picked up a Crimson Hydra for 16.99 (just for the Aero Viper), they had one more Bravo Vehicle for same price but didnt see what it was.

TRU had a lot of the Doc and Shipwreck exclusives, and I saw my first repack, a Shipwreck was repacked with a Nano Viper, I have a pic, pretty funny.

Both TRU and Walmart had lots of Charbroils, Paravipers, Nano Vipers as well for the usual 10 bucks.

I got lucky, the only thing I was looking for was Aero Viper and Kamakura and I got them  ;D ;D
Might pick up a Charbroil and some of the winter ROC for some Joe Canuck universe customs if they go down in price.
