Yearly CanJoeCon Discussion / Re: 2012 Canadian Joe Con
« on: August 11, 2012, 11:05:15 AM »
I'm aiming to be there for Saturday, not sure what costume I can whip up, either something new or something that was well received before - will see :)

I say go for something new.

After finishing packing up a new (desert Low-Light) and an old outfit (Shipwreck) I got a phone call and the fickle-finger-of-fate has decided that I'll have to postpone until next year  ::)

Nothing serious, just mostly priorities that screw up the timing - at the earliest I'd get there at 4pm.

All my best to Mike and the crew and will vicariously attend through con reports, photos and news clips :)

Cheers :)

Yearly CanJoeCon Discussion / Re: Friday night before the con

Just got home from Kingston a few hours ago, really wanted to stop by tonight but I'm utterly exhausted.  Playing catch up with some details and will aim to head up in the morning, maybe even throw together a costume or two :)

Hey there, thought I'd post a feature that was published this morning, the local paper has a publication called People of Record which gives insights of people in my neck of the woods who do interesting things, such as a police dispatcher and a track coach in his 70's.

They did a story on my attendance at conventions and costuming talents, this time as a Colonial Marine from ALIENS.  Check out the graffiti on the front chest armour for a shout-out to my favourite GIJOE character

http://recordphoto.ca/peopleofrecord/?p=369 is the direct link, it's also available on the home page of therecord.com, enjoy :)

Thanks to all for the show and the kind words for my costumes, sorry I had to split but that's how it goes for me ;)

A reminder request to please send photos to me via my website linked in my signature... for a reminder I was Low Light and a new version of Dusty ;)

Slight update again...

I hope to still make it, but my outfit won't be as accurate as I wished because the goatee is staying on, oh well :P

However, there is the potential that I'll be bringing 2 Joe costumes as well possibly a creation I'm working on for the 'oh wow that's kinda cool factor'.

Off to bed, pulling double assignments this week... ;)

General Joe Talk / Re: SID next costume will include this...

Heh, been getting a giggle out of this thread, thanks ;)

Also I had to log in to the site on my crackberry, for some reason I can't load the joecanuck homepage or the forum link on my computer, yet a dns check + replies to thread show its working, weird, been like this since fter my first reply in thread.

For the record I do plan to shave for this years costume but I'm VERY tempted to grab the classic helmet make into a Breaker costume with the gear I have already :P

There's a couple items there that I'd love to grab but I can't justify the cost :P

The classic helmet is great, I immediately thought about the first 1982 figures and the little attachments to the helmets that went missing so quickly.

Nice find Martin :)

My Jayne Cobb debut in Toronto a few years ago ;)

It's more or less the same coloured uniform but who the heck wants to carry around a giant periscope around the show :P

The main difference with my Low Light outfit in progress is that my vest is black, but the rest of the costume is as best a match as possible to the original figure.

Last year I wore a helmet and extra fabric for the Dusty costume and sweated my [censored ;)] off, this year I'll have to put up with a beanie cap :P

It was good meeting some of the crew again, the con itself was kinda meh on the cost/benefit ratio but I had just about enough fun to justify a one time go/recon.

The Firefly and Baroness team was awesome, maybe I shoulda picked to go as a Joe instead of Jayne Cobb :P

Looking forward to June :)

Had a chance or two to work on some parts of the outfit.

One of the most challenging parts to accomplish for this costume was the properly coloured red tint goggles that Low Light wears.  Somehow I managed to find CF goggles with removable ballistic lens for $15 :O  Something I can use anyway, so I grabbed them and added some red light filter gel cut to size and fit behind the lens.

The red stuff below the goggles is some of the red gel - it's the same material that used to be used to red the tech specs of the original Transformers toys.

So, the rifle... I wanted to find a fair balance between realism vs. safety/size & weight issues.

I figured the best route to take would be to use my NERF LongShot, but with added parts, notablly the LongStrike barrel and the Recon target spotter underneath for kicks and giggles.  I wanted to add a larger scope but will just use the one that came with the LongShot.

Next up, digging up the knee and elbow pads, then a test run of the outfit :)
