Title: My customs
Post by: nighthawk on May 06, 2009, 05:54:22 PM
Well, I thought I might as well share some of my customs with those who don't frequent the other boards.

Mainframe:
Added original backpack to him and modded walkie talkie to fit on backpack.  Made helmet removable.

Quick Kick:

Your figures looks great.  A lot better than original.  I wish to have patience and time to do this kind of customs!

Some of the customs took over a year to do.  I finally finished my Mjr Bludd a month or two ago even though I started the Mjr Bludd when the Desert Set first came out.

I finished him off finally by adding Hawk's holster, and now I think I'm done with him.

Also gave HD some new accessories so he can actually fit in with my 25th:

And a few better shots of Roadblock:

Didn't like Red Star head for Ripcord, so I used Rook's head.

I also wished Snake Eyes came with his original backpack too, so I modified one.

And everyone should have a removable helmet:

all fantastic improvements, man.  I agree, everyone should have removable helmets and pistols for that matter, not more sculpted on stuff, give us the interaction!

Great stuff, all around, man.

Thanks guys.  Lots of these mods were things I've always wished for when I was a kid collecting G.I.Joes but had no means or tools to achieve them.  I finally get to realize that dream now.

So, when I first posted my RnR and Clutch short sleeve mods, I've had a couple of requests to post how it's done.  Here's pics of the RnR and Clutch I originally did:

I finally found suitable arms for Falcon and did it for him finally too.  Here's some WIP pics and steps.

First, remove his hands and lower arm.  Cut the cuff off the arm.  Then make a hole down the middle.

Then on the upper arm/bicep, you have to trim around the bottom as shown:
This is so the cuff can fit over it.

The cuff is stretchy so you can stretch it over it (just trim more if it doesn't fit) and that holds it in place.

After you are happy with the fit of the sleeve, then you just pop the arm you want in there onto the figure.

Here's the finished result for Falcon:

The Tunnel Rat I got, the paint on the straps on his right leg were done really poor and didn't line up at all.  I had a comic pack Shipwreck so I swapped out his thigh with Tunnel Rat's and now TR has a pistol and pistol holster on his leg as well.  Added ammo belt for his gun and painted eyes.  For the backpack, I took Arctic SE backpack and shaved off the begs for his feet things and then hollowed out the back a little so it can fit over his ammo belts and his TNT bag.

I got Monkeywrench but my main issue is the lower arms used.  They are so short and small.  I don't have any glasses so nothing I can do about getting some glasses on Monkeywrench, but I just needed the arms fixed, but I didn't want to waste the arms off another figure so I came up with a simple solution that will not waste any figures:

I used the Cobra Flint arms on Monkeywrench and put Monkeywrench's on Cobra Flint.  Since the troopers are more scrawny looking, I think the Monkeywrench arms work and the skin tones match perfectly.

Well, I finally put my Wetsuit together.  I asked someone who was trading the Chuckles head to paint it for me.  I have the parts to make Wetsuit look like the 1986 version, but after a lot of debating, I decided to keep him as is as it makes more sense.  I'll use this one as a cold water operations Wetsuit and if I can get a hold of another Wetsuit, then I'll make it 1986 version accurat.  I'm just waiting for a Flash helmet.

Thanks!  My latest one is here:

Very simple mods to Short Fuze to make him look more like the original.

Head: Short Fuze modified to sit lower on the neck post.
Lower legs: Clutch
Body, upper legs and arms: Duke
Hands, web gear, belt, and backpack: Zap

Hope you like it.  I also drilled out the barrel of the mortar too.

Up here in Canada, I never saw the fixed wrist Clutch and Breaker up here.  I've fixed up my Clutch in the past but I've given up on getting a fixed wrist Breaker and fixed one up but because it was Duke arms, it had limited range of motion.  I wasn't too happy with it and now I finally put one together that I like.  When I saw Benchpress' head, I decided that's the head I wanted since the original Breaker had same head as Clutch and had brown hair.  I really didn't like the oversized head of the 25th Breaker.  So here's my Breaker with short sleeves:

Backpack is the vintage one with peg removed and a hole drilled into the backpack with a pen ink refill piece glued into place.

And for a tutorial on how to do the arms, see this link:

To make the huge helmet fit, I just cut a piece of twist tie and put it on the front of the helmet so the front of his hair has something to catch onto.

Couldn't decide what color beard for Frostbite by decided to just go with this look in the end.  Since his V3 Hasbro figure had brown hair and this type of a hat, I decided to mix the two looks together.  I think this head fits on the body better than the original one I did above.

Parts:
head: POC Shipwreck
legs: Paris Pursuit Storm Shadow
rest: ROC Frostbite
holster: Chuckles

I'm just waiting to get a Wolfhound.  His skirt is soft and flexible so I'm hoping he'll fit perfectly in the Wolf Hound.

The remaining POC Shipwreck parts, I just gave him Tunnel Rat's gun and put on the desert Zartan alternate head on him and just called him Sub Zero.  The vintage one never revealed his hair color so this is nice cheap update for me.

Frostbite:

Sub Zero:

In 2000, Whiteout was released and to me it just looks like Snow Job with black goggles and boots.  Since the 25th Snow Job's hair is not as red as the ROC one, I put the ROC Snow Job's feet and goggles on the 25th Snow Job and he's Whiteout and the ROC Snow Job is my default Snow Job.

Blizzard:
This one is still a WIP.  Still need to mod some handlebars on the backpack.  The head is just the Sky Sweeper pilot's head.

Since I couldn't get an SDCC Slaughter, I just took Benchpress body and used a BnB Slaughter head.  Drilled the socket a bit deeper and swapped the right knee with another Benchpress so he'd have two kneepads.  I wish the Hasbro Slaughter isn't an SDCC exclusive cause I really want the whistle and baton. :(  You can see what I did with Benchpress' head in the photo (ie. Breaker)

Here are my different iterations of Wild Bill and Ace over the years:

When I got the SRO Wild Bill, I loved how he looked and the darker colors.  The only things I didn't like were his mangled hands (due to the elastic in the packaging), his oversized holsters and his pin sized head.  After finally getting the new Wild Bill, I have a Wild Bill I can be proud of.

Wild Bill:
Helmet: 21st Century Huey pilot
Hands and head: ROC Wild Bill
Holsters: Removed the holsters and trimmed them down and then reglued them back on
rest of figure: SROII Wild Bill

The left over ROC Wild Bill parts and his vest screamed aviator to me and I was never happy with any of the Ace's released.  (the white comic pack one didn't have any flight gear cause of his space helmet and the SROII one didn't really do it for me as his upper half was just Wild Weasel).  Well, I finally have a nice pilot Ace that I'm happy with.

Parts:
head: SROII Ace
hands: 25th Wild Bill (single pack)
leg harness: Pilot Destro
helmet and mask: BBI F-18 pilot
rest of figure: ROC Wild Bill

Later, I managed to get a 25th Wild Bill for $4 so I jumped on it.  I hated how his head was so small and I hate how his holsters stick out too far and the gun doesn't go in far enough.  I had an extra Dragonhawk Wild Bill head so it solved the small head problem.  For the holsters, the one on other Wild Bill in this thread was what I wanted to do, but it took me 3 tries to get it and still it's not perfect.  This time I went the lazy route and just drilled holes in the bottom (from the inside) of his holsters so the guns go in deeper and also fit tighter so they don't fall out.  Very lazy tweak but I think it makes a world of a difference.  Let me know what you think.

Just so I had an Ace in his white uniform, I cut around the collar of his vest, his helmet and mask will fit much better with the realistic BBI helmet/mask combos.

I also repainted his eyes too.

the 5 pack Hawk's head screamed Mercer to me, so here's my Mercer:

I never liked the fact that Grand Slam was a clone of Flash.  Since Hasbro had a head sculpt from DTC for Grand Slam, I modded that head and used it for Grand Slam.  What do you think?

The crappy thing about the 25th Serpentor was his bald head and worried look.  It was disappointing that Hasbro didn't retool the head they had for him before in the Real American Hero line so I took it upon myself to do it for Hasbro.  The biggest surprise for me was that the DVD pack helmet fits this head so it worked out perfect for me.

head: VvV Barrel Roll modded
parachute pack and jetpack: Resolute 5pack Duke
rest: Air Raid

I didn't like how Steeler had the slit wrists, but in his vintage version, he had long sleeves and gloves.  I finally fixed that by getting an extra Duke/Red Star pack and used Duke's lower arms and Wetsuits hands. The helmet is a custom cast comic pack Steeler's helmet that Alyosha did for me a while back.  In the picture, you see speckles on it, you don't see it in real life.  The flash brings it out in the photo...haha.

I had a Night Spectre that had no stickers and a ROC Dragonhawk sticker sheet.

I didn't like how the cockpit of the Sharc is so I modded it and put a Firebat seat into it.  The dash piece and flight stick are from a model kit.

Hope you guys like it :)

Just finished up some new customs:

Didn't want another Clutch so I decided to change him to Skidmark.  I know the original is orange, but I think the red works better as it is darker and it matches the car's red suspension.  The head is Pit Commando's.

Big Brawler is just the AoCI Outback.  Didn't want to paint over the Survivor so I just put Clutch's webgear on him to cover the chest. The head is Tomahawk from the Ghost Hawk.

Hope you like em.

Rampart:
When I saw the POC Dusty alternate head, the first thing that came to mind was an updated Rampart.

I was thinking of doing removable helmet but the head's too small and I don't have the time.  I still may do it later on but not right now.

Since the original one only showed his mouth, then why not just leave it like this.  There's no reason why he can't wear a mask...haha.

Swamp Rat:
Just for fun.  I didn't like the heads of the ROC Vipers but this was on sale and I thought since he's green, he's perfect to have a Swamp Rat head modified onto it.  Very simple custom.  Just had to mod the head to fit and then put on the accessories.

My only critique is Rampart's colour scheme is a little "all over the place".

Thanks!  Yeah, I know Rampart's scheme is a little 'all over the place'. haha.  I left the green holsters just to compensate for his lack of green as the vintage one has green on his boots.  (it's my lazy excuse for not painting).

Personnaly I don't find that Rampart's paint scheme is all over the place. One could just supposed that this is how he would've looked like had he been re-released in the Battlecorps line.

But I have to give praise to your skidmark though. One thing is doing a Snake Eyes or another character that we've seen redone over and over. Another thing is to take an obscure character like Skidmark, and updating him in such a simple but impressive way. Four thumbs up!

EDIT: I don't own that many of the Valor Vs Venom figures but I do enjoy your Swamp Rat custom, it looks updated and natural.

I started off making this into the Cobra C.L.A.W.S. Commander.

After finishing it, I kinda thought that the uniform makes him still really recognizable as Cobra Commander.  So, I'm kinda torn between calling him Cobra C.L.A.W.S. Commander or Red Laser.

I think it's a CLAWS Commander to me more than a Red Laser. Can you do something to the helmet so that he looks a bit more like a Red Laser? How about taking a ROC Mars Trooper helmet instead, I don't know, it must be the head that is 100% CLAWS's that is bothering me. Otherwise, pretty good initiative.

Rest of figure: TRU ROC Troop builder set Duke

I know the necks don't necessarily match color with the heads, but I don't want to bother painting and have the paint chip off later.

I had to modify the belt to fit Black Out.  I put it on backwards so he wouldn't have two holsters on one side.

Ripcord and Blowtorch were my favourite vintage figures.  I finally got a Blowtorch that I really like (except I still have to fix his legs).

Now, I finally have a nice Ripcord to put together with Blowtorch.

I didn't like the AoCI head that was used.  When I saw the POC Joe Mech driver's head, I thought it would be perfect for Ripcord.  I had made another one before using Rook's head, but the head was too big to fit the helmet and mask so this one's perfect.

I wanted the hose to connect to something so I drilled the end of Ripcord's hose and plugged it to the end of ROC Eels' oxygen tank hose and then modified the parachute pack and the tank to fit each other.

It wasn't till after taking the pictures that I realized the tank was not black!  haha.  Oh well.  I'd rather not paint and I'm happy with it.  Not everything has to be black.

I gave him Tomax's wrist piece so it looks like he has an altimeter.

I've made an updated POC Rampart.

head - POC Dusty - I know the tan doesn't match the legs, but if I ever get a hold of the Joe vs. Cobra Recondo head, I want to mod that into Rampart so his face isn't covered, so if anyone has an extra they can spare, please let me know.  Thanks!)
body - Arctic Snake Eyes
legs - Airborne
gun - vintage with Jungle Viper bipod attached (I didn't have the vintage legs so I modded the Jungle Viper bipod onto the gun)
peg on belt for gun - modded the peg on a Jungle Viper cannon barrel and drilled a hole in the belt and put it through.

I had an extra POC Dusty so I decided to play around with it to make a POC Ambush as I don't think Hasbro's ever gonna make one.

head - General Obi Wan from some Clone Wars line that I modded
bandolier - Duke (I know it's going the wrong way and only has one grenade, but I wasn't going for a 25th version of Ambush)
belt - Dusty's belt with the pads removed
backpack, helmet and tent poles - vintage (I know I'm missing some tent poles.  If someone has some extras that they don't need that they can trade me, as well as his vintage rifle, that would be awesome!)
rolled up tent cover - Dusty's cape

I can see that you are very inspired when it comes to re-doing more obscure characters from ARAH, that's a very good thing, +1 Timbit for you  :timbits:

I was lucky enough to get an Alpine.  However, one of my complaints about it was the fact that his gauntlets get in his way for posing him holding a gun in a realistic way.  So, I originally put Beachhead lower arms and removed the gauntlets and put it on using the clear elastics.  It wasn't very easy to pose though and I finally came up with the solution.

I cut up the 25th Alpine lower arms and hollowed it out so it would be a sleeve that can go over the Beachhead arms.

Here's a picture of the sleeve.

The hands are from the green alien from Star Wars that was in the Stormtrooper uniform.  His hands were bigger so it makes it look like he has thicker gloves.

The gauntlets just fit over the sleeves now just like it originally did, but they can now rotate around his arm to be in different positions.

A while ago, I had a friend make a Jinx for me.  The head he used on it was the red Cobra Diver head.  I wanted to make her unmasked so I modded a VvV Jinx head to fit onto the custom he made for me.  Here are the results.

I realized after taking the pictures that the neck looks a little long so I'll have to fix that up.

So, I love the Resolute Scarlett sculpt, but I really don't like her head sculpt so I changed it.  I also didn't like how here waist was so plain so I added a holster.

Parts:
head and crossbow and holster: desert ambush Scarlett
hair and the rest is Resolute Scarlett.

Not Joe, but thought I'd post it anyways.

I really love the Evolutions Jango Fett, but there were a couple of things I didn't like about it which I was hoping the new version would fix.  One being the holsters not having the thigh straps and the other was having the backpack with the projectile.
Well, Hasbro fixed one thing but not the other, so I've finally given up and just modified mine.

Backpack is from the Kamino escape Jango Fett.  The holster and helmet are from the apartment Jango.

Title: Steel Brigade
Post by: nighthawk on February 24, 2011, 12:49:37 PM
This started off as a 25th Dial-tone custom that never got finished cause I saw the Gijoeclub one and decided to get that.  I was undecided as to what to do with the figure until I found this Steel Brigade helmet while I was digging through my parts bin looking for something.

The only painting needed was the crotch area of the Airborne torso, and I removed the paint on the neck because the Dial Tone head I was using before had very pale skin.  I regret doing that now but I guess he has a turtleneck on underneath now.

Recipe:
head - Hard Master - basically just use a head that I have no other use for that fits nicely under the helmet
torso and arms - Airborne
hands, legs and gear - ROC Duke in Cobra 5 pack
helmet - Pit Commando

I like the new Skydive figure, but I wish his head wasn't the Flash head.  I had a head that mswi/heretic had painted for me a while ago for another project.  Decided to use that on Skydive.

For Freefall, it's just a Luke Skywalker head.

After seeing the POC Recondo, I knew I had a simple way to make a Salvo finally.  No painting required.  Here's the recipe:

Head: modified Star Wars General Weir
left lower arm: TF Flint
left hand: ROC Breaker
accessories: vintage Salvo
rest is POC Recondo

I haven't decided what to do with the tab on the launcher yet.  I'm considering removing it completely or modifying the peg to fit the new style figures.  What do you think?  Is there any point making the backpack fit on his back?

Here's my latest:  Slipstream

Never really liked the head used for the 25th Slipstream.  I thought it would have been a great opportunity for Hasbro to give us something like the vintage but with a removable helmet.

Anyways, here's mine.

I don't have a dremel and paint so I had a friend dremel out the helmet and another friend paint the goggles for me.

Here's what I did, I modded the DTC Footloose head to fit on the 25th body and removed the visor from the 25th Slipstream's head after my friend dremelled out the helmet.  Hope you guys like it.

Here's my latest two:
Heavy Gunner Viper:
Just a very lazy head swap.  Really like the new Destro, just didn't need another Destro.  Don't have an extra IG head, but if I did, I might want to use that instead so he can go with the new IG (if I ever manage to get my hands on them)

What do you think?  Does anyone have an extra IG head or a Python Viper head?  I'm thinking the Python Viper head might look nice cause of the red face shield.

Charbroil:
Never really liked the ROC one and managed to score some vintage gear to make this.  I never realized how dirty and yellowed the backpack was until I saw the picture...haha.  I'll either use the other Charbroil backpack that I have which I didn't mod yet or I'll just clean it up and leave it yellowed, so it looks like oil residue or something.  Let me know what you think of the Charbroil.

He cast me the head, baton and whistle.  I ended up keeping the BnB head on it, but now I have the next best thing to the real baton and whistle for my Slaughter.

I prefered him with his knee and elbow pads on just cause everyone else's didn't have the elbow pads.

I think this is the Slaughter Hasbro should have made.  He looks more imposing than the SDCC one.

So, I finally got the Green Lantern pilot gear.  The green matches Ripcord's nicely and I had a spare Ripcord body.

Don't know who to make this guy yet.

Just think it looks cool.

Sorry, I don't have a clear picture of him with the helmet on.
