Waiting for my foam core supplier to reorder so I thought I'd post some w.i.p. photos
making the figure cutouts.

'85 & '86 completed foams.

The logo headers being routered.

There, finally read through all the pages.
Nice collection. I'm not brave enough to put the weapons in their hands like you.
Do you just collect the ones that tickle your fancy or do they have meaning to you? For example, I collect the '82-'86 figures because that was the years that I played with them and I always dreamt of having all the figures and vehicles from those years when I was a kid.

Dollar has pretty much killed my interest in buying Joes since I used to cherry pick nice stuff off ebay for my collection and most of that was in the US. I've noticed a huge drop off in local CL ads with Joes as well. Don't know the correlation though.

I've also pretty much slashed any discretionary spending since food has gotten insane expensive. Video games, vacations, eating out. At least Fallout and Witcher take a long time to finish...

That makes sense with CL. It would be more profitable now to sell in US$ on Ebay.

Yup, been repeating some of my old favourites on PS3. (Not getting a PS4 for quite a while)

I'm on the fence about renewing my membership. $66 USD = $95 for 1 Pythona figure. I don't care about the new letter at all. I never read them.

I made the comment on their forums tonight suggesting offering a $50 a year membership with digital news letter would be a welcome addition to memberships. The US membership is $44, yet the Canadian is $66. They have said in the past it's due to shipping costs. Fine, keep the news letter and mail me the one toy (which btw they sell for $25).

I doubt they will listen, but maybe if a few of us got behind the digital news letter they might come around.

And no, I haven't looked on eBay for a while now. The USD is killing us right now.

Morgardee, I read your post on the club and commented on it, then saw this one and found this one a little clearer so I amended my post there, but I still have some questions and comments.

The $50 membership with digital format, do you see that as a Canadian or International membership?

The international membership is $92US and if you compare Australia's dollar, which is on par to ours, they pay $133AUS.
So if you're suggesting a $50US international membership we'll actually be paying $72.50CA. The same price as the Australian collectors. To me that doesn't make sense if you take in account the shipping distance. They'd be getting one hell of a deal compared to us.
But if you're suggesting just a Canadian $50 digital subscription, well the club would have to look into seperate US and international versions. Which would lower the US to something like $30 and the international to $80.

On some of the US joe forums I've noticed quite a few US club members use the $67 US membership in order to get their figures faster, which, when on par with the CA$ they were paying more than us.

As for the club mag; I actually like it and wish it had more content, I actually bought the back issues I missed a couple of years ago.

My membership was due in Sept and luckily the exchange rate wasn't as bad, but come this Sept, If the club doesn't shut it's doors, I don't think I'll renew my membership if the dollar stays this low or drops some more.

But that's how collecting goes. Stay frugal when the dollar ain't on your side. Or if you see your collection as an investment and you bought when US & CAN $ was on par then now might be the time to liquidate or down size.

I was speaking about the Canadian Membership only. I haven't looked into international shipping charges beyond Canada.

The magazine I don't read. They don't have any new information I can't find online.

Ok, thanks for clarifying.

Yes, buying from the States has slowed considerably, been searching for more Canadian etailers though.

The low dollar does help our exports though (lumber and grain in my region), but yeah, no trips to the States any time soon.

Looks really nice. Did you use glass or Lexan? How heavy is it? Could you hang it on a wall or is it shelf only?

Thanks. I'll break down all the materials I used
I bought a 4'x9'x1" 2lb density packing foam(just under $200 with shipping and taxes, you city boys could probably get it for $150), so it's easy to cut with an exacto, but is soft enough not to put too much pressure on the figures. Plus I can melt shapes for the accessories without much problems. I use a pencil soldering iron to make the small cuts for the accessories.
The frame is made from 2x4 that I cut to fit the foam and I made a lip to hold in the glass and foam.
I used glass (1/16" and took the frame in to get it cut to size)because it's easier to clean. I've used Lexan before and it scratches too easy.
The backing is foam core that I got cut to size at a custom picture place in town.
I used 70lb picture wire attatched to 1-1/2" eyelet hangers and two 30lb picture hangers to hang it.
The top logo is a 2x4 cut down to 3" and I routered the logo with my dremel router attatchment, and attached it to the frame with doweling and wood glue. The frame with the figures is approx. 15lbs. The '85 & '86 cases I'm guessing will be close to 20lbs.
Each case will be approx. $100 for materials (the foam and glass being the most expensive)and take 5-7 days to do(leisurely pace mind you).
And my wife says they look better on the wall instead of the drawer, but I think that's only because I'm almost finished redoing her cupboards, LOL.

I like that. Much better then my way of placing them in bags in a bin down in my basement.  :)

LOL. That's how mine are too, just wanted to be able to look at them without rummaging through a drawer.

Don't get me wrong. I would have mine all out in every room but and with all my small kids running around they're safer in storage for now.... and the wife said no.

Yes, safer that way with little kids.

wow realy good ideas ! best way to show them with all accessories without chance loosing something and all without the dust.
Thanks, and this way I don't take the chance of breaking a thumb either 'cause I'd HAVE to display them holding their weapons if they were on a shelf.

Wanted a cool way to display my classic Joes but never found anything that I liked. Didn't want them loose on a shelf or case, so I built my own display.
I liked the way the club had the figures in foam, so I took that idea and made a frame and the logo and date (router for depth) on top. I plan to make cases for each of the '82-'86 series but decided to start with '84 because I had most of the figures complete. Now I can display my classic Joe without having to dust them all and I don't have to worry about losing anything.
