For someone out of town its tough to know, I feel your pain as it is not cheap. But the 407 does have special signs, it is a Blue sign as opposed to the standard green and the 407 signs do indeed say Express Toll on them. Just make sure you remember to avoid the Blue sign for next year, live and learn.

ok i didn't see them but i wasnt looking either and i took that road last yr and didn't get hit with a toll so i was shocked to get one this yr. def going to skip that road next yr. the thing that got me is my gps was set to avoid toll roads and it didnt pop up and i just updated it befor ei left so that is why i asked.

There are signs X, your GPS may have a toll option warning - and maybe it's shut off for Canada? I know mine has an option to ensure I take NO toll roads.
Chances are, the signs were there - but since you were listening to your GPS, you didn't see them.
The 407 is a joke. I used to take it when it was first opened up - but don't anymore.
Also, if you weren't driving yourself in 2010, chances are the driver got hit by it, or you guys just didn't take it then.
No chance for you to hit it prior to 2010 as the Cons were all in Hamilton.

It sucks as only some Americans can get billed so far.
From Wiki:
For drivers without transponders, the automatic number plate recognition system is linked to several provincial and U.S. state motor vehicle registries. Currently, only the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, and the states of Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, New York, Maryland, Maine, Georgia, Florida, Pennsylvania and possibly several adjacent states and provinces provide 407 ETR access to their registry databases due to the privacy laws of these states.[citation needed] This has resulted in untold numbers of motorists from other jurisdictions being able to travel on 407 ETR without receiving a bill.

mike i drove it last yr and nothing so not sure why i didn't but glad i didn't lol. ya not going to drive that road agin and it was set to avoid toll roads. and i wasn't looking at the sings as i was just going off the gps. man that is such a rip off that they can do that here there has to be a booth to drive it. well now i know and knowing is 1/2 the battle lol. at first i thought it was a speeding ticket and was like i wasn't speeding lol.

to be fair the toll system is very good, you can hop on and off without stopping. And the road is very well maintained and fast...that is if you can afford it. During rush hour its really really good.
-
I use the 407 for work purposes when i have to get from Brampton to Newmarket in a rush other than that I will not use the 407.
-
see here the toll is one set price not getting charged for camras or miles on it. i do now know to make sure i have my gps set to avoid that road lol.
-
see it is a really good highway when im going home to Niagara falls on a friday during rush hour, but i agree it should be a fixed price like the states, it would generate more revenue, because more people would be willing to use it. but then on the same hand it should be Canadian owned, but instead Canada sold the highway to a company in Spain, which has operations in Montreal, a few years ago (1999), and they have be in legal battle with Ontario government due to increasing rates without the government permission.
-
ok so im curious, are there cameras that caught you taking this toll? how did it know you went on that road?

The have cameras set up at all on and off ramps.
I only take the 407 for work, mostly if I am stuck in Mississauga late in the day dropping off by samples to the lab. It saves me an 1.5 hours and no stop and go traffic to deal with.
And remember, it was the Conservatards under the Mike Harris who sold sold the 407 to the Spanish. It was our fucking tax money that paid for the highway. Hence, this highway should be free.

that sucks. we have toll bridges here that cost a few bucks to cross but not any roads, at least not in california (that i know). i think they have them in michigan but i could be wrong.

Just noticed this comment. The 407 ETR are notorious for supressing bills for years, accumulating interest and then come calling when the trumped up charges reach into the thousands. My suggestion is that if you drove on this highway and did not receive a bill... call them and straighten in out right away.
