Title: Time to start planning?
Post by: Raptor on November 29, 2005, 06:53:50 PM
So...

What does everyone think of putting together a joe meet in March or April?

April, so the snow can melt off the roads.

Also, not on April the first. I got plans already.

Try not to have it on any religious holidays in 2006.

I was going to start this after my Sale next week.

WAY too much going on right now.

One thing is for sure this time.

Religious holidays, weddings, birthdays, trips or any other plans won't matter this year.

I want to pick a date this time and just LEAVE IT as that date.

I'm hovering around March 18, or April 8th.

Talk among yourselves.

I'd like to see at least 30 - 50 people at it this year - so get your fellow Canucks interested guys!

I know of at least 7 other 'local-ish' collectors that don't come here or the meet........ no clue why.

April 9th crosses Spring break, so that's always my vote.

What does the Montreal Branch say to getting together and organizing a group trip?

I vote for April 9th.

No!!! No vote... no no no no no no no !

Awww screw it.

April 9th it is. - ASSUMING the hall is free to book.
I'll check sometime in the near future.... don't believe me? Go into the far future and check! (While you're there - see if the hall is available!)

Hmmmm, once  a date and location is set, I should start planning on ways to get there. Living out in the middle of nowhere without a drivers license and car is a pain.

Heck all you Montreal folks should group in and pay for a rental of a mini-van.

You could splilt a hotel room as well - I hear Scramble likes to snuggle.

I'm sure I'll still be around (in Canada) during that time.  April 9th sounds good to me.

Not only do I like to snuggle, but I give off heat like a furnace. Anyone that gets sweaty in flannel PJs, I am the solution to your problem.

Good grief. What does that mean? Solution to what problem? Having to wear flannel PJ's? If the only other option is you, I'll stick to my flannel PJ's!

New date would be April 8th.

Hey Beeker, I'm sure others can fill you in as well, but there's a 'partial' write up on one here:
http://www.joecanuck.com/meet.html (http://www.joecanuck.com/meet.html)

Last year was the first year there were dealers set up selling.

I'm 'hoping' to have ALOT more this year as a few have already asked me about it.

Now that we have the new date, any chance that you can update the splash page? ;-)

OK, you can have your sale first, and count all my money, then you have to update the page. ;-)

You expecting a big turnout for my sale THIS Saturday there Raps?

I'm not.

The splash page I think will have to go - or, set up a Blog-type thing on it that would allow some JoeCanuck members to post updates on 'all things Joe'.

That would be the best bet I assume - at least then it would get updated.

Gah! Work just got me enrolled in some courses at Conestoga College that run from 9 - 4:30, every Saturday starting January 14, ending April 15. Not looking good for me this year making it now, but I have to do it in order to keep the bosses pleased, thus have money to buy Joes.

That really sucks 'cause I know after spending 7 plus hours in a class room going over computer crap I'm gonna be brain dead and most likely won't have the energy to hit the road this year.

I might have been wrong on when that course I'm taking ends. It's either April 1st, or April 14th. When I called and asked the college on the phone they told me it ends April first. I'm still waiting for confirmation but it's looking good that I'll be there. I hope so 'cause we always have such a good time.

Besides, without me there, who's ass is Mike going to kick when we play PS2 wrestling?

Yeah, I've been a bit lazy on new customs but I have pretty much finished that M.U.S.C.L.E.S. snake eyes figure. It's alright, but I did screw up after using the rit dye job, not all the plastic went black so I had to paint but i used old black paint and that didn't dry right, so i had to paint over that. Gah!

Glad to hear it, because this year, the Raptordrome is staying at home.

I'm not going to end up making the changes that I wanted to it, so it's going into the back of storage until I move. I've got way too many things to do to tackle a project that large right now.

I do have a whole pile of project that I've already completed, and just not had time to photograph. I am hoping to do so over the holidays, and maybe they'll show up at the con come spring...

This is embarrasing. I can't read a calendar. My spring break starts April 14th, the week after the meet. Tina and I already have our plans to house hunt on my extra days off, so we won't be making two trips in a row.

I'll try to see you guys when I am there, but I'm going to have to miss the meet.

Just want to bring Raps good point up again. How about an update on the main page.

So far it looks like April 8th, and I'm guessing it's at 1:00 pm again until the bowling alley kicks us out? I won't be able to stay late that night because I have a friends fund raiser that starts at 7:00 to get back to here in K-town. She needs me to help run some games.

Anyone remember what it costs again? Mike, I'm looking at you.

Well that would just plain old suck. I don't know how were suppose to show more love for the topic. Right now there isn't a lot of G.I.Joe talk going on in this message board as is, so should Mike stop selling them at his store? I hope not.

I think the problem is the product itself is a little stagnant. Without a lot of new product coming out and only on line, there isn't much fun in the "thrill of the hunt". Sure I heard the rumor that Toys R Us (U.S.A.) are starting to carry the DTC line, but will we get looked over again?

Then there is all the delays from the MC group. They only just announced the location for the Con, New Orleans and that is after so many people has said it was a good idea not to have it there after they announced it was going to be there at first but due to the hurricane they had to cancel that location. I think that was a bad move of their part. Plus I haven't heard anything about this years free figure for members and the 2 figure packs they keep talking about are taking forever for us to a) see test shots of, b)place an order for them.

Personally I think all these negatives are really starting to hurt Joe, so we need something positive to keep our own interest in the line alive. That's why our own Joe Canuck meeting is important. Sure it's small and under a bowling alley in a hall the is possibly haunted, but at least it is something we can look forward to. It just feels to me like G.I.Joe is teetering and could go either way but with the 25th anniversary of ARAH approaching I hope it can at least make it to that milestone before Hasbro packs it up for who knows how long.

I've gotta comment on this, but I don't have the time right now to make a worthwhile post.

Here's some 'briefs' on it:

1. I'm seeing next to NO interest for the Meet this year - online AND in the store.
2. I'm considering moving my store next door to a much bigger place - IF I do that, I highly doubt I'll do the meet as this would happen in the next few months.
3. I'm burnt out. Honestly, I spend any spare time I have at home working on things/catching up on shows, and spending time with Denise.
4. I have plans for another 'exclusive custom' figure this year - and no time to really do it (or the parts I need).
5. Lack of dealers. You guys seem to like the non-toyshow way this meet goes, and so do I. But let's face it - most dealers DON'T care for it - they want the money and don't care for the hobby. I've had TWO people that deal in Joe tell me flat out - "If you do a 'real' toy show, then I'm in."

Let's see....... can I think of another reason? Yes - our own counrty doesn't supply us with any Joes - Sigma Six or not. Plus, Toy Fair is THIS Sunday..... and I'm not looking forward to visiting the Hasbro booth - heck, I may just skip it.

Look at that....... I wrote more than I thought I was going to!?

How about this...

We'll do it like we did the first year. (and I mean the first year). Whoever wants to meet up will drive down. We'll hang around the shop for a bit, then go out for dinner after Mike closes up.

You know.... you don't need a 'Joe Meet' to do that. ;-)

Give me until after Toy Fair guys.

I've always said I don't care if the meet makes money, but between the meet and the hosting of the site, I also don't want to lose money.

The biggest thing for me is the figure that I had in mind to do..... but I need someone with casting skills to do about 30-50 of the heads for me.
Raps has the bodies I need, and I'm SURE I have the weapons. :-)

Yes! I think the #1 best part of meeting up is getting to hang out with people who you can talk Joe with. The #2 is getting to put faces to all the names on JoeCanuck.

Ditto with what everyone else said. I can go to toy shows anytime here, but meetups just to hang out and buy/trade between collectors is what I look forward to with this meet.

So you guys are cool with only a few people selling items then and pitching in for the rental of the hall?

If so, (that takes a ton off my mind), then I'll go book the hall.

Any extra money this gets (IF any extra) will go towards the site, door prizes,  or the meet next year.

Speak up guys (even you lurkers!)

What is the hall rental cost anyhow? Are we talking $20.00 each or something like that? I'm fine with that if that is what it is, just trying to get an idea.
