Title: Comic or cartoon
Post by: Pete The Greek on February 15, 2004, 04:00:13 PM
Ya, ya, ya, this thread was locked on yojoe but.....

So which one do you prefer or which one shaped your GI JOE universe?  Mine is the cartoon as I didn't follow the comic books as a kid.  I didn't know they were out.  The cartoon got me hooked onto GI JOE as that was the purpose of the cartoon (a 30 minute ad).  WUTV 29 ah the old days.

I    tend to use the Comic  as  my universe.. with a little of the cartoon thrown in  for fun.

My friends and I were into roll playing so we made our own universe!

We were forever invading Cobra Island....so some comic influence...but other than that it was all hack and slash....people always died...and we played it over and over again....from the begining....lots of fun reallly!!

I lean forward towards the comic. I especially loved the DD series when Brandon Badeaux was pencilling it, it all had a sophisticated style that's rarely seen in GIJoe.

A bit of both.......
The Cartoon and Comic (for me) seemed like different stories.
The Comic was the 'ongoing' story, and the Cartoon was 'mini-stories'.

After watching a few of the Episodes on the DVD set now, I think I actually prefer the Comic version of Joe....

Still...... as a kid watching Duke and Scarlett flirting, and then reading about Scarlett and Snake Eyes..... well.... I had my own ideas about her then. ;-)

I'm with Pete...

the cartoon was my "canon" when it came to joe. I never read the comics - in fact, until I have the complete Marvel run I won't read them ... so you can say the Cartoon is *still* my canon.

Granted, I have been following the DD comics, but they aren't as ingrained into my head as the cartoon.

The only exception is the Duke/Scarlett SE/Scarlett thing.  Even though I'm a cartoon guy, SE and Scarlett just make way more sense as a couple.

Turned into a major flame war.

"You're an idiot if you like the cartoon" "The cartoon is WAY better moron"

that kind of thing.

You can't have a civil discussion on most message boards, especially yojoe's message board.  The King of Canada mentioned the reasons why that topic was locked.

Hey Pete, you're an idiot for liking the cartoon. Loop you're an even bigger moron for liking the comic. Mike, you're the biggest moron of all for liking both.

Anyways... with that out of the way, for a REAL canon, check out http://individual.utoronto.ca/gijoecanada (http://individual.utoronto.ca/gijoecanada) for the true story of G.I.Joe.

Comic all the way. Seeing as how Larry Hama wrote all the FCs and every ish of the comic and the creators of the cartoons blatantly disregarded all of that work, i just can't view the cartoons as having any sort of official part in the story. Don't get me wrong, the cartoons are fun and i really enjoy them but the were pretty much fluffed up 1/2 hour toy commercials and to me, therein lies their charm.

I put up a link to your website and took a photo of my Joe Canuck figure. :) If it would make you (and the rest of the planet, ahahaha!) happy, I can do a short dio about Joe Canuck (and his new pals Crazylegs, Airtight and Cloudburst) fighting Python Patrol, but otherwise I don't have access to most of my collection.

Yup, I'm with Pete...the cartoon all the way.  I've never to this day read a comic.  WUTV buffalo, channel 29....I think Joe was played in the afternoon or at 8 in the morning...yeah, the 8 am I think.  Man, those were the good old days

I remember watching Joe on WUTV before school every day.  Every morning I would watch hoping that they would call the number on my combat pay (does anyone else remeber that stuff?).

Sadly, I never won anything.

To answer the question, I honestly have to lean toward the comics.  The cartoon was my fave when I was a kid, but I love the comics.

The comic probably influenced the way i played with my joes, but in my battles so many of the joes and cobras died each time, that really, it was just a slugfest.

It would take me hours to set up my battles and just mere mins to destroy most everyone!

The carton ..I never read the comics. If I did it was an occasional thing.I still did my own thing a lot though.Like the Duke/Scarlet thing.Come on,Duke was a crappy figure and I was not waisting one of my "chicks" on him.My Joes died a lot too.Always to come back for my next big play episode.I use to have be all end all battles. Those were the best and always ended with Snake eyes and Storm shadow fighting to the death on the deck of what was left of my TBP.

I also made my joes in to superheroes when they were not doing Joe battles. Ie blowtorch, was IRON MAN, i used 3 chopped toothpicks per hand with tape to make removable claws (wolverine) with Crystal Ball (just b/c his hair reminded me of wolverine haha)  I would replay the secret wars in my own version. I had other figures i used too, i had all the alpha flight characters, fantastic four etc....all created from my joes based on their colors etc. Loads of fun.

When i was into WWF, i would make my joes WWF guys as well.  Just pretend you had a ring, and make them duke it out.

but when not having WARS with weapons, my favorite thing to do with my joes was to sit on the top carpeted steps in my house, and have a big punch up with them.  Of course your favorites usually lasted to near the end, the toughest guys lasted longer as did the ninjas.  They would punch, kick, etc , whatever moves i could think of. They would jump off one step onto joes on another step.  I would have all these fights going on, it was a real blast.

Its sad to say, but if i had the time and money to just do whatever, i would continue to do those things from my childhood. Still got a ton of Kid inside me
