Title: Rarest "common" ARAH figure
Post by: Zenith27 on November 11, 2013, 10:10:13 PM
Anyone have a general feel for the rarest common figure to acquire? Carded and non-carded are different categories I suppose. I don't mean special mail-away ones like Starduster or strange variants but just normal figures.

It's been my experience that it's the Viper Pilot or Silver Grand Slam for non-carded figures, I suspect it's since they were never offered as mail-aways. I certainty don't see many of them around, even on e-bay. Especially silver Grand Slam.  Seems to be more shitty Viper Pilots available.

Carded figures, I'd have to say Crimson Guards. Maybe it's just me but I never find them locally and they're pretty tough to come by in general. They're not super expensive when you find one but still pretty rare.

Anyone care to offer up alternatives?

I would say Sneak Peak because he's a common figure to find without accessories. However try to find one loose complete, excluding Ebay of course, and you're in for a Mission Impossible.

Carded, everything before 1987 should be considered common rare IMHO.

That's a very good one. I lost my mic within days of getting him back in the day.

What I was meaning was more the rarest figure, not rarest complete figure. Lots of figures have rare parts of course. Heavy Metal comes to mind. Figure = easy, mic = impossible.

Back in the day it took me a while to get an Avac pilot.

I seem to recall Hard Top is harder to find.

Basically vehicle drivers that were never released by themselves seem harder to find.

I'd agree with viper pilot as that symbol comes off easy and then he's just another of the nameless horde....  :)

Later year figures aren't as desired and so even though the supply is small they are pretty cheap when you find em.

i do have something that is rare to show you guys, i picked them up recently from lead palitoy designer Bob Brechin, they are the actual figures sent from Hasbro to palitoy before they were even named to show the palitoy team what they would be making for them, not all the labels survived but 3 have, Bob signed a proof sheet for each to give them some provenance.

not quite what the question was asking but rare all the same and interesting.

Thunder has been the hard one for me to find, though I am finally getting one. And Tollbooth, I've had the Toss n'Cross for awhile now, but never seem to set my sights on Tollbooth.

I have a Tollbooth begging for a new home...

It depends what you consider to be "common", but according to YoJoe marketplace (http://www.yojoe.com/marketplace/wanted/), the most wanted figs are:
  • Cobra commander (common), position #3
  • Viper pilot (rare), position #4
  • Keel Haul (rare), position #6
  • Grand slam (somehow common), position #8
  • Shockwave - Night force (somehow common), position #10
  • [...]
  • Steeler (common), position #17
This gives us an idea...

That Cobra Commander is kinda surprising but I suppose I can understand since he was never released as a carded figure. I'd almost consider him a special case since he was a mail away or Sears exclusive.
Viper Pilot of course.
Keel Haul is unusual since I'm pretty sure he was available as a mail-away. He's certainly more common than the Defiant figures in my experience. (His gun on the other hand)
Grand Slam (Silver) was only available for one year I believe and people already had a JUMP so didn't buy another to get him.
Nightforce Shockwave goes for a lot for sure.
Steeler is a strange one. I'm pretty sure he's rather common BUT finding one with nice gold bars on the arms is pretty tough, and of course all of the straight arms were only available one year.
