Computer help needed
« on: February 19, 2010, 02:56:27 AM »

Guys, I'd really like some help here...

I have some kind of damned virus or something, that prevents both malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials from updating...what's more, I can't even go to the malwarebytes site, OR to the Windows update web site.  I've downloaded a few different antivirus programs and even done a Windows LiveScan which found and fixed 4 issues and 5 threats.  Still, no luck on getting rid of this damned thing.

If any of you guys have suggestions, I'm definitely ready to listen...

Hrn.

I'd say give SpyBot a try, maybe it'll work.

Installing AVG as your anti-virus might be a good idea too.

Beyond that, I can't be much help at the time.

Laptop or PC? IDE or Sata HDD?

Either way, the best way to fix your problem is an external virus scan. Remove your HDD and slave it to another clean PC and run malware bytes on it from that 2nd PC. This will get the virus that is screwing with your registry.

Anything else and your spinning your wheels in mud.

I see this all the time. Comes with the title "IT Support".

Morg, it's a PC.  I have no idea what type of hard drive it comes with.  The only problem is I don't have another clean PC I could slave it to to run the virus scan.

Oh how I wish I could get my hands on the person who made this virus...

Have you tried to run the computer in safe mode?  You can then run malwarebytes and hopefully get rid of the problem.

Perhaps a solution can be found in this thread:
