Title: September 16th: Second Annual Montreal Joe Meet!
Post by: Scramble on July 17, 2006, 06:20:32 PM
Why should Hamilton have all the fun? Last year?s Montreal Joe Meet was a nice inauguration; I say it?s time to officially make the event annual.

The Second Annual Montreal Joe Meet
Saturday, September 16th, from noon until the lot of you want to leave, come join the most avid fans and casual collectors as we celebrate our shared joy for the 80s immortal toyline: GI Joe, A Real American Hero.

Last year saw a great deal of parts trades, some TCG tutorials, and a ton of friendly banter, but due to a technical error, was missing the premier of GI Joe Sigma Six, as planned. This year will feature all that (minus the technical errors or episodes of Sigma Six) and more! Like what?

How?s about:
-Dealer?s Tables!
-Speed Painting Contests!
-Something Else Really Cool!
-An Exclusive Figure!

That?s right, Montreal is stealing Hamilton?s thunder by offering our own exclusive figure! Registered attendees will receive a limited edition custom known (for copyright issues) as Canada Pride. Who this highly recognizable Montreal native is shouldn?t be any surprise to those that know their GI Joe filecards.

Because we?re a bunch of big kids, the Meet will take place in the Grande Salle (direct English translation: Big Room) at Notre Dame de Sion Elementary,  just five minutes from Cote Vertu metro, and four minutes from two different Tim Hortons!

Entry will be twenty dollars. This gets you admission to the con and as a free bonus, the Canada Pride exclusive figure, limited to only 20! It will also get you a baggy with a random head, chest, arms, waist, and legs to be used for the Speed Painting contests. Trading of these parts is allowed, but no painting or modification of these parts should happen until the official start of the painting contest. Fodder donations are accepted (all head and torsos should be ball joint friendly, thank you).

PM Scramble for more details, or to inquire about obtaining a dealer table.

When: Saturday, September 16th, 2006. Noon on.
Where: 1775 Boul. D?carie, St. Laurent, Qu?. H4L 3N5
Why: Because any Star Trek, Star Wars, and comic fan can walk into your local nerd shop and start up a conversation on the subject. When was the last time you said ?Hawk could lead circles around Duke? and weren?t met with blank stares? We need these meets. We need the Hamilton convention that Joe Canuck puts on, and the national conventions Master Collector gets us. We need to be able to say ?I don?t care how ludicrous my hobby is, I want to get together with like minded individuals and just talk?. And let me tell you something. Over the years I?ve met more and more of us and I?ve come to the conclusion that GI Joe people are my kind of people. We are cool, and funny, and many of us have strange and interesting jobs. And we are people that take care of our own.

Join me in Montreal September 16th. You?ll be taken care of.

Will paint and brushes be provided or do we have to bring our own?

Oh yeah, I should add, I'll probably be a little late as my Japanese class ends at noon. But I'll go straight there (from Villa Maria metro) so I should be there before 1PM.

The logistics of the Speed Painting Contest will be disclosed at a later date. Expect some paint and brushes to be provided, but you are encouraged to bring your own.

Using another man's brushes is like wearing another man's trousers. ;-)

It looks as though I will be there. I have some logistical issues to work out, but it looks like the family and I are hitting MO town for a long weekend, so barring any major complications, I will be attending.

Maybe Jay, but honestly I don't know.

I'm still working out plans for it, but I don't know if I'll get them decided or done in time for this, and more likely to affect the decision, I'm not sure if I want to bring it with me on the train.

As it was, there were only about 15 complete joes in the bin, with a lot of non-joe stuff, and a lot of parts and accessories. I'm working on that, but it'll take time.

I also have to figure out what I can and can't do with it because I'm not going to the meet as a vendor.

Thanks for the personal invite Scramble. I've been meaning to post here but just never got around to it. Everytime I was here, I kept thinking I'll do it next time since it's so far away. Then I realized it's a month away. You can count me in as well. It'll be cool to see some familiar faces.

Where are you guys? Redmao? Custo? Maple Viper? Kadarle? L'Ombrageux? Prince du Lu?

Scramble seems to be putting a lot of work into making the MTL joe con happen and to make it fun so let him know guys. It's only one day of the year.

I appreciate the plug Madman. Seeing only Raptor and Jin post, let's just say I know how Mike felt when he was worried no one was showing up for this past Joecanuck meet. In that case, it turned out to be the best ever.

A little news on the Montreal Joe Meet. A friend of mine by the name of Matt Stone (or just Stone, cause it's cooler, there are fewer Stones than there are Matts, and so he doesn't get confused with co-creator of South Park with the same name) works at a print shop and is in negotiations to set up a table. He's already printed some Cobra bumper stickers he'll be selling. Is there any particular logo you'd like printed? Post your requests here. I'm also going to talk to him about 1:18 sticker sheets for vehicles.

Even found some figures I'd like to give or trade

Well, the meet is now one week away...

Ryan, how's the attendance looking so far?

I MIGHT not be able to attend after all. Depends on if my new friend wants to do something after Japanese class next week, or not.

Sorry I haven't replied for a bit. There's been an issue I was waiting to straighten out and unfortunately, it's hit an impenetrable wall.

I commissioned Kamakura from Joecustoms to cast my parts. He had a job with a props company in Hollywood and is quite proficient with molding, etch. He said he could cast any part except arms. So I gave him my shopping list and set about getting Big Ben arms, which were the arms used on the original custom and arms I thought would be easy to find.

They were. Kamakura won a few auctions with enough arms to cover the entire project. He sent them to me to dye and send back to him so he could colour match the torsos. Unfortunately, they never arrived, and I waited too long to accept they were lost and initiate my contingency. I dyed the few Big Ben arms I had left and was ready to send them to him. But I rushed the job and wound up with lower arms that were darker than the upper arms. So I watered down some red ink and gave the parts a wash. It evened the coat and didn?t clog the recesses in the joints. This led to a new complication.

Kamakura had trouble matching the glossiness of the arms, a glossiness I never intended the parts to have. I told him to worry about the shade of red rather than the glossiness and that I?d apply the same ink wash to all the figures if there were any problems. There were, one out of anyone?s control. If anyone saw the thread Kamakura posted, his cousin recently died in a car accident and he?s traveling to visit the family for a week. This week. He PMed me saying there was four hours of work left, and he could only do them when he got back. I replied asking if the four hours was work that had to be done to every one of a certain part, or if there were at least some parts ready. If it was the latter, then I could at least get enough parts to get them to the first few attendees. He hasn?t replied so I can only assume he?s already left and won?t receive my PM until he logs in some time at the end of the week.

So, I regrettably have to post-pone Canada Pride Back-Stop. All attendees will be asked to leave me their address at the door, and I will mail or hand-deliver the piece as soon as they are ready. I?m sorry about this, guys, but this ended up being quite an undertaking with Murphy?s Most Famous Law showing up several times.

There is some good news. An entire case of paint has been donated for the speed painting contest. And twenty bagged LBCs are ready for the brush strokes. There will be sets of dollar store paint brushes available, but you are encouraged to bring your own more-precise brushes for your own uses. You are also allowed to bring your own paints, but I draw the line at bringing crock pots and rit dye, because that stuff gets messy.

All the LBCs are assembled, so the parts fit reasonably well and all have the requisite screws and o-rings. If you?d like to bring your own unaltered pieces to LBC, you are allowed, and there will be parts for sale at $0.50 a piece (heads and waist pieces count as single pieces, torsos and two, and a pair of legs with a t-bar counts as two. Individual arms count as one). Just a warning, I had little more than 20 waists, so outside of Big Ben?s, I?m dry. There?s even a Snake Eyes v2 on one of the LBCs, and I?d been saving that one in case mine broke.

Speed Painting will start at 3:00 and last one hour. During that time, you can buy remaining LBC packs for $3.50 each. At 4:00, no more brush strokes are allowed. You then have thirty minutes to fill out a filecard for your creations. At 4:30, filecards are paired with complete customs and judging will be handled by myself, Tank Girl, and those manning dealer tables. Criteria include paint skills, recognition of original parts (the less recognizable the better), how well the name and specialty applies to the parts, and finally character. First place will win his choice of GI Joe Collector?s Club New Orleans Convention two Ferret with two corresponding troopers (two Coils and a green/gold Ferret, or two Skull Squad members and a brown Ferret). Second place will receive the remaining Ferret and troops. Prize valued at $35! Enter as many customs as you complete in that hour. Judges will not be allowed to participate. Please don?t fight over paints ;)

My original estimate for attendance was 20. I?ve flyered  local comic and toy shops, so hopefully there will be some off-the-street attendees. Otherwise, I would estimate about a dozen attendees right now. I?ll be making reservations at the Cage Au Sports across from Place Vertu, so if you will be bringing friends or significant others, please let me know.

I?m excited about the interest and personally can?t wait to see you all this Saturday, September 16th.

Well, like I said, I might be doing something else, so I can't confirm my presence until quite possibly only Saturday.
So I'll probably be f#!:yojoe:*&  when it comes to the Cage Aux Sports reservation if I do make it.
I had a friend who said he'd come, but if I don't come I dunno if he will.

Okay. It's official. I WILL attend. I'll just have to do some last-minute planning so my mom or dad can pick me up from school and drop me off, because I'll be bringing my trade fodder, which includes some larger-than-small vehicles, and carrying those things ALONG with a backpack full of Japanese books through public transportation won't be too pleasant.

I just don't know when I'll arrive. I might end up missing the start of the painting contest. Which I probably won't participate in anyway, since my custom style doesn't really call for full repaints (I make Poseable, Playable Customs)

Ryan, can you save me some of those fodder bags?
I have a constant severe lack of good fodder.

I have noooooooooo idea how much money I should withdraw for this meet. I mean, 20$ for entrance, I think I owe Ryan like 25$, and then I still need money for buying whatever I like from the dealers...  :?
Title: September 16th: Second Annual Montreal Joe Meet!
Post by: Scramble on September 13, 2006, 10:27:04 AM
Good to know, Jay. I doubt we'll go through all the fodder bags (Raptor is donating ten more, as well as accessories for each), but if it's looking close, I'll grab a few spares for you.

Redmao, if it interests you, one of the LBCs has an Eco-Warrior Flint torso. Now these will be blind grabs, so there's no guarantee you get it, but if you see someone else does, you're free to trade with them.

A few updates and a request:

Yes, Tank Girl will be tabling a bake sale. And, one in every four brownies will contain a GI Joe figure baked right into it! (pending approval by the health board, and anyone that feels there might be better things to do with the brownies and the Joes. Come to think of it, it probably is a terrible idea).

Matt Stone's labeling company will be there as well. He will have several generic sheets on hand and his computer to take orders for more.

I was originally going to have a table selling Joes. However, since none of the comic, toy, or model stores I approached got back to me, I'm worried that there is a conflict of interest. How can I stand there manning the only booth selling Joes and tell you guys you can only buy from vendors? So if you guys can't come to reasonable compromises (two Wetsuit heads for a brownie? Sold!) then you can resort to selling.

Finally, is there anyone with experience setting up web cameras? Because I consulted my friend Jay, (not to be confused with the artist formerly known as Jin) who knows everything there is to know about computers, and he admitted he'd never setup a webcam. He had site space to host the feed, but couldn't help beyond that. Is there anyone with enough computer know-how to get this thing running, or should I look into using a camera with film and going about it that way?

This saturday, boys!

That's because I just put them in my sig, like, an hour ago.

After the Dawson shooting, I just can't help but wonder what I could've done, especially since I was at Atwater Station JUST as the shootings had begun... All I can think is that I was raised idolizing heroes like Actarus, Albator, Superman, Batman, the people who did the right thing... would I have done the right thing, no matter how foolish or dangerous to my life it would've been, if I would've known about the shooting ahead of it happening? I don't know why, but it just drove me to listen to the old Goldorak theme songs, and I decided to put those lyrics in my sig on most of the boards I frequent.

Yeah, I'm weird.  :shifty:

Actarus or Duke Fleed for those who watched the original japanese or english version was indeed heroic. He was the best. A true model to follow as a kid. he was cool no maytter what the Vega Empire threw at him. I wish they've made 3 3/4 action figures of Actarus and Alcor instead of those 8 inch super joe figures that came out in france. You read right they were part of a GI Joe line up in france.

Back on topic, I wont need the printing service. My file got corrupted through transfer...zut alors!

My Daina custom should be an especially fun trip down the customizer's memory lane. :P

It was a cool day.
Glad that I finaly met other collectors. You guys are awesome people.

There was the board game (Scramble's creation), the Joe episodes, the speed painting contest (Bowlhead now stands proudly on his file card in display), the custom figures on display and of course Kadarle's massive Terrordrome which is really cool and impressive, can't wait to see it once its done.

Tina, your brownies were excellent. Better than the one I got at La cage after the meet.

Speaking of which it was fun to goof around with the double J at the restaurant. Keep the hatred alive guys, because we hate them so much!!! (They'll understand)

  Big thanks to Ryan (Scramble) for setting this up.
