Title: Hasbro will be at Joecon and showing new product.
Post by: canprime on March 21, 2015, 04:25:02 PM
So it was posted on another site that Hasbro has confirmed that they will be attending Joecon this year, and they will have new product to show off for 2015 and possibly beyond.

Great news!!!!!  Finally a little light being shone back on the brand.  Granted it won't be anything too spectacular, according to Hasbro, but more along the lines of what we got for the 50th.

Still, every little bit helps.  It should be interesting to see what they have planned, and it is only a couple of weeks away.

That's good news indeed. I'm on the edge of leaving the hobby but if Hasbro comes back to the table and says they still have plans for Joe that might keep me around a bit longer.

I hope to see vintage vehicles redone and new Kreon...

I'm just interested to see anything really. Speaking of Kreo, did Canada even see the wave 4 & 5 blind bags and the last waves of the building sets?

I don't know. I lost interest driving from TRU to TRU looking for toys that I never find. So I teamed up with an American friend that found me everything I was looking for.

I imagine it will be something limited, even more so than the 50th offerings.

I would say Kreo will be a big part of this year's offerings, and maybe another couple of 2 packs and a vehicle pack?

The real question is will there be anything "new" in the works for the brand for 2016, and not just more of the same?

No. I had to get mine from Tru.com and eBay.

That's always been a weird mentality to me. If they stopped making G.I. Joe I'd still always be a part of the hobby. Just maybe not spending so much $$$ on it. I guess for some people a collection that doesn't grow isn't interesting?

Not really. I'm all around loosing interest in toy collecting. Every time there is new Joe news it makes me go"Oh? What's going on?" but every time it seems to have less and less impact. I use to tell my wife everything Joe related but now I hardly mention it. Dalton has no desire to play with it except maybe the odd animal, so the idea of sharing the hobby with my son isn't likely to become a reality. Some times I think the collection looks cluttered and then I start thinking "If I sold all this stuff I could pay off my house and buy a new vehicle".

I totally missed the big toy show this year. I didn't find out about it until a few weeks later. BTW, that new Devastator looks neat.

So when I hear Hasbro is going to be there it makes me go "Oh, I wonder what they have planned" but at a more causal pace.

Honestly what can you expect?

Nostalgia can only take you so far.

Unlike collecting a lot of different things (wine, stamps, art, etc. etc.) toys, or more specifically, a "brand" of toys doesn't mean a fairly large and continuous release schedule of new items.  GI Joe is a large brand of toys, and has 50 years of history.  That is a lot, but how much of that, or any hobby with a large history/catalogue, can you maintain an interest in for a long period of time?  Once you have "everything" then what?  How many times can you watch the shows?  Read the comics?

Yes I will always have a space for Joe product/fandom, but there is only so much room, and I have owned everything pretty much from ARAH in the last 10 years.  SPace, money and waning interest have had me reduce a lot of that.  Also, honestly, the new media (movies, comics) are nice, but not really grabbing my attention as much.   Hell even coming here to discuss Joe has all but dried up except for a few members.

In the end people change over time, interests come and go and what you may have loved with a passion at one stage of your life no longer matters.  That's life.

I understand your thinking. I was excited to introduce my son to GI Joe when he was young (early 2000's) and when he lost interest and found his own thing I kind of stepped away until 2008 when the nostalgia bug hit, then I went nuts and went after as much modern era stuff I could find. Now I just plug holes in the 82-89 ME line up, mostly by making customs.

The new comics still keep me interested though. So when Hasbro has something to show, I'm always keen to see if there will be any product that will fill a hole or that I can use to make something to fill a hole. Honestly, I just hope Hasbro finds something that will attract a new generation to Joe.

I've more or less stepped away from GIJOE.  I've not bought a 4" figure in about a year now. The 50th stuff flat-lined my interest in the brand.
I'm more interested in the Marauder Task Force figures.....when they finally get here, that is.
But even then.......I'm lukewarm on the stuff. I'm not going to get rid of what I have, but I have had stronger and stronger thoughts about boxing up most of it and putting it away in storage.  That'd be about the first time in...........oh..........30 years that my interest has waned to that degree.
Hasbro is going to have reveal some genuinely NEW thinking...and not just more nostalgia....for me to rekindle my interest in the line.  I'm not expecting much.

the sniper figure is apparently name 'Sightline' and is a tribute to Gary 'Goggles' Head aka Gyre-Viper mayherestinpeace.

Hasbro's sure milking that Skystriker mould with TWO versions...

No new thinking.  Same old "blah" rehash, repaints, re-releases.
Nothing here was designed less than, what.......about 5 years ago?

Agree, but the two Skystrikers look good :-)

Oh, sure....there's nothing wrong with the sculpts on any of this.....it's all solid stuff.  But there's no new blood. No innovation = stagnation, and stagnation leads to the "deth of teh line".
It's what so frustrating to me as a collector/consumer of this line.......it's built on a lot of great product, a lot of good thinking.....but a few years back, someone decided to abandon any NEW thinking and just rest on what's already been done.

How long is that going to last for them?  I don't think it really paints us collectors in a very good light either, especially if we eagerly swallow whatever gets rolled out. Nostalgia might seem a blessing to some, but it can be a curse to the whole.
There's NO incentive for Hasbro to put any effort into this.....just dangle a 5 year old carrot in front of us and we'll obligingly bite.

I wish it were otherwise.

I like to set up my figs around the house. Usually on a shelf or something. I'm also going to do another dio-story one of these days. I started shooting one last fall, but wasn't pleased with where it was going. It involved Long Range being escorted across the world to aim some nukes at an incoming meteorite while Cobra gave chase. (because only he possessed the skill aim them properly) Maybe later this year...

I tend to gravitate towards new versions of my favourite characters. The most exciting stuff to come out in the past couple years (for me) has been the club's Night Force set, Zombie-Hunter Clutch, Cesspool, BBTS Renegades, SDCC Jinx, SDCC Bludgeon, Jungle Viper, Zombie Viper and Retaliation Cobra Commander.

I like when they release new product. Especially when there's new characters (and there ARE new characters in there, but mostly on the Cobra side and mostly troop builders). But I'm not disappointed when they plan/release stuff I don't like. I just skip it and wait for the next year. If the line were to die, I'd still have plenty of cool stuff to set up. My imagination is still in good enough shape that I could come up with countless storylines.

Overall this was a good year.  I mean it would have to have been an utter disaster to be worse than last year when Hasbro couldn't even be bothered to show.

The highs:  More vehicles and figures!!!!!!   The mention of the fact that GI Joe 3 will be the start of another phase for the brand!!!

The lows:  More vehicles and figures!!!!!  Honestly there are some gems in the lot, but overall it is a lot of "meh" choices for colours and characters.  Honestly there are a lot animation designs that haven't been done and could be done (arctic clothed characters, etc.)  I love the blue on the Snow Cat repaint, but it is an ugly recolour in my opinion.  Also,  ANOTHER AWE!!???????  REALLY HASBRO??????!!!!  Jesus, just drop the bloody mold into the ocean already.

I mean there are a ton of subgroup repaints that are still dying to be done, and they would have been perfect choices for some of these exclusive sets (TRU or SDCC).  I'm thinking they could have done either Dreadnok set (Air or Ground Assault) since they have all 4 vehicle molds, in new version as well.  Tiger Force, Sky Patrol, etc. etc.  I just don't understand the unwillingness to go after those sets rather than take a chance on new paint schemes.  The exclusives are basically geared towards collectors now.  I think we can all agree that there are few kids getting these toys anymore.

Also the new mobile game.  I was so glad to see a new game, and it wasn't card based!!!  However I wasn't too happy with it basically being a Joe themed ninja game.  At least it is something.

Overall it was nice to see something more being done by Hasbro.  Now get it in gear and get us GI Joe 3 so we can get more attention and product for the brand.

I've seen the stuff online and tbh, I think most of it looks crap. I know I'm not into the modern era stuff, but I have seen stuff and thought, 'that's actually cool' (see Lowlight, Airtight, the PIT Commando, Lifeline) but most of this looks shite.

I think they need to ditch the ARAH/Cobra guff and reboot with something new instead of relying on 33 year old ideas. Don't get me wrong, I'm ARAH til I die, but damn do something new already!

I was at the Hasbro Panel at Joe Con, they are making 2 versions of that set.  The SDCC set with an extra figure then what will be found in the Retail version.  so you can still get them all you are missing out is on the extra figs.  They also said they are getting out of the Waves.  All the items we be available on 8/1/15 so not sure when they will be here in TRU Canada.  Kreos are coming but they are run by a different department so he has no control on what they do or make.

I saw those two similar set for this one:

G.I. JOE DESERT DUEL: F.O. E. Striker & Cobra Basilisk. Include Night Fox, Philip ?Chuckles? Provost, Elite Horseman & Cobra Air Trooper. USD $59.99

G.I. JOE DESERT DUEL: F.O. E. Striker & Cobra Basilisk. Include Night Fox, Philip ?Chuckles? Provost & Elite Horseman. USD$49.99

But I didn't see this for the Cobra Scythe jet set... did you?

I'm trying to remember what the extra figure was.  I think it will be an Alley Viper as I remember my friend saying he had to get that Viper when they showed him up on the screen.

The other think with the SDCC versions, if you put the 2 sets together you get a Awesome Art Mural to display.
