Reviews Section / Got the Snarler Cycle and Accelerator Suit Duke
« on: August 31, 2009, 07:26:35 PM »
I very happily got my HasbroToyShop package today which included the Snarler Cycle with Beachhead & Rollbar and Accelerator Suit Duke.  I'll review both.

The Snarler Cycle itself is a neat little cycle which appears to be the Arashikage cycle with an added sidecar...and in fact, the sticker sheet includes two Arashikage clan logos if you wish to make it as such!  The main difference between the Snarler and the Arashikage is the Snarler's front end has a more traditional wheel/long handlebar/single headlamp setup.  The sidecar includes a missile launcher.  And for collectors who hate stickering vehicles, this is the vehicle for you, as it only included 6.

The Snarler Cycle comes with not one but TWO figures...who also happen to be fully outfitted with backpacks and weaponry (but still no figure stands!)  Which once again begs the question...Hasbro, why couldn't you throw in a lousy pistol or rifle with the $40 Night Raven or the $25 Steel Crusher, but you can throw in TWO figures AND full accessories PLUS a vehicle on a $15 cycle?

The two figures are Beachhead and Rollbar.  Beachhead is a straight repaint of the first (2007) single pack 25th anniversary Beachhead.  This Beachhead has a black shirt and balaclava instead of a green one, and a light green vest and green camo pants.  The backpack, pistol, submachine gun, and crossbow are all the same as the 25th Beachhead.

Rollbar is a straight repaint of 25th Airborne, which is a good and bad thing...good because Airborne was one of the best 25th figures (in my opinion anyway) and bad because he's such a straight repaint even the head is the same, though I'm sure customizers will quickly take care of that.  Rollbar is recolored in light and dark gray camo, and comes with the same backpack, pistol, helmet, and carbine as Airborne.  The only goofy thing about this figure is that the factory scrunched his rappelling gear up very close to his crotch so he could easily sit on the motorcycle or in the sidecar.

If you decide to add these two characters into your Joeverse, Beachhead is of course the easier of the two due to the fact that he's masked.  You'll probably want to try and fit him in too, because he's a nice looking figure.  Rollbar could easily be customized, and is still a very nice looking figure...I just wish they'd given him a slightly different head from Airborne.

Bottom line?  You get two fully outfitted, nice looking figures PLUS a neat little vehicle for less than the price of two ROC figures at full retail.  Can't beat that!

As for Accelerator Suit Duke, whether you want him or not of course depends on whether or not you despise the Accelerator suits.  This is the exact same mold as Accelerator Suit Ripcord, just with darker (and I think nicer-looking) colors and a different head.  The two figures come with the same gun, but Duke comes with the gauntlets that were used in the movie, which really makes for a nicer looking figure I think.  Why they couldn't throw those in with Ripcord is beyond me, because they fit the same on him and look just as good.  The only other difference I could find was the visor on Duke's helmet is glossy black instead of satin, which I also think looks nicer.

There was one thing I didn't like about this figure, and five minutes after opening him I'd already corrected it.  For some reason, they painted the neck flesh color.  Not only does it look kind of odd when you put the helmet on the figure, it doesn't match Ripcord whose neck is painted glossy black.  I was so put off by this I quickly grabbed a gloss black paint marker and went to work on that neck, which greatly approved Duke's appearance IMO.

Bottom line on this figure?  If you like the Accelerator Suits, get him.  If you don't, well, don't get him unless you want to give him the M60 treatment for "ruining" GI Joe  ;D

Pictures of these guys, along with comparison shots between Duke, Ripcord, the Beachheads, and Airborne/Hit & Run/Rollbar are all available for viewing in my collection album on photobucket.  Mainly because I still don't quite know how to get pics to work in the boards, so if someone could help me out there I'd appreciate it  ;D  And sorry that the quality isn't the best, my apt doesn't have the best lighting & I'm using the cruddy camera on my 1st gen iPhone.

General Joe Talk / Have any of you messed with True Heroes stuff?
« on: August 31, 2009, 12:11:48 AM »
Next to the Joes at TRU is a line of military toys called True Heroes or something like that.  They have a bunch of 3 3/4" sized vehicles & playsets, and they're all reasonably priced.  I think the most expensive thing is a rocket transport that is absolutely huge for $50.

Have any of you guys ever seen with or messed with this stuff?

The reason I ask is because they have a rather large, nice-looking patrol boat for $26 that I have been considering.  With a few custom painted parts (the weapons are, for some reason, maroon) and the removal of some others (brightly colored life preservers hanging on the side) I think this could be a nice custom Joe boat to rival the Moray (the two are about the same size).

I know it's not of the same quality as the Joe boat and the figures would promptly go in the never-gonna-use-em bin but I'm just curious if anyone else out there has seen or messed with these before.

General Joe Talk / Wild, crazy, and wonderful dream...
« on: August 24, 2009, 09:41:35 PM »
So last night I dreamt I was in the clearance section at Target and came across a whole rack of 25th Anniversary figures.  Seems they had gotten a case of mistakenly shipped (but still packaged) prototypes.  They were all 25th Anniversary figures of later ARAH Joe releases.  I specifically remember Road Pig, Metal Head and Laser-Viper from my dream.  I grabbed figure after figure, and even better they were all on clearance for $2.99 each.

I know what prompted this; I made a Word list of every ARAH figure that I know for sure I have in storage back home and went through YoJoe's archives to refresh my memory.

I do have to admit that when I woke up and realized it was just a dream I was pretty sad  :'(

General Joe Talk / Successful Vacation
« on: August 18, 2009, 11:32:50 PM »
I went up to Houston this weekend to visit one of my best friends and check out his new house (in case ANY of you guys missed me or wondered where I was...probably not...that's where I was).  I had high hopes for the vacation because I know Houston gets stuff a lot quicker than we do and there are WAY more stores up there.

I ended up buying two more Elite Vipers, another Eel, another (25th style) Eel with Wave Crusher, Baroness, a Crimson Neo-Viper, and the big find, a Paris Pursuit Baroness.  I also got the Crimson Hydra and the Dragonhawk XH1.

I'm kinda disappointed with PP Baroness because her dress doesn't come off so she's not too poseable.  And I'm puzzled why they made a different head with non-removable glasses for her after they obviously spent a lot of money on the mold with removable glasses.

The Crimson Hydra is just kinda ok.  I mainly got it because I never got the Sky Sweeper.  The removable scout pod is pretty cool though.  The Aero-Viper figure is decent at least, and would look great in the good ol' Z-25 Condor.

The Dragonhawk is very cool-looking, and the way the missiles sit flush with the sides of the chopper when it's not in "attack mode" is neat.  Pull part of the tail back and the missile pods pop out as a hidden surprise for Cobra forces.  While this version of Wild Bill is decent looking and I know Wild Bill is supposed to come with the Dragonfly/Hawk, did we really need another Wild Bill figure?  My other complaint is that the rotor blades are thin and seem VERY fragile.

Honestly I really, really wish they had made the Dragonhawk twice as large, added a second seat, and made it an Echo-class vehicle.  Then it would have been perfect!

General Joe Talk / Got the PIT Commando
« on: August 13, 2009, 08:17:39 PM »
After looking EVERYWHERE and almost giving up I was able to put my TRU gift-card to work when they made the PIT Commando available for order online the other day.  I got him in today.  A few impressions.

This is one of the best Joe figures EVER.  The figure itself is kind of plain-jane, with next to no distinguising features.  What makes it one of the greatest figures ever is the sheer amount of gear he comes with.  The PIT Commando includes:

1.  The Pit Commando figure (of course!)
2.  Blue & gray camo floppy bush hat
3.  Night vision monocle that straps over the hat
4.  Shockwave/blast's gas mask from the comic pack
5.  Dark gray SWAT/riot-police style helmet w/flip-down faceshield
6.  Black helmet modeled exactly after the old Steel Brigade figure's helmet
7.  Dark gray SWAT/riot-police style tactical vest with shoulder pads & crotch protection
8.  Bulky black combat vest with a neat molded in pistol
9.  A VERY large black backpack with canteens molded on one side, could be used as a parachute pack
10. Silenced USP/SOCOM style pistol
11. Uzi
12. Small sci-fi looking submachine gun
13. My personal favorite...an MP5 style assault rifle with doubled up magazines like the Marauder Inc MP5, but with a grab handle up front, a small night sight, and a Surefire flashlight attached to one side of the barrel!
14. Dark gray medium-sized steel shield with the ROC Joe logo on the front of it.

It's worth buying the figure for the gear alone.  It also makes the ROC Zartan worth owning, because you could outfit your PIT Commando figure with the regular vest, backpack, and whatever weapons combo you desire, and put the riot gear on Zartan and have a riot MP!  All the gear and the Steel Brigade-style helmet also makes the PIT Commando perfect for customizers.

All this for (US) $7.99.

General Joe Talk / Ever been embarrassed by your hobby?
« on: August 10, 2009, 11:33:02 PM »
Considering that most of you folks on here are guys who grew up with GI Joe from the 80s and still collect them in adulthood...do any of you ever get embarrassed by your hobby?  You know, funny looks from a hot girl or a MILF while you walked out of the toy aisle with an armload of Joes?

Usually I could give half a crap about what anyone else things about me or my hobby, but I do remember one embarrassing incident.  I live in an apartment complex, and the mailboxes are really small.  If UPS/FedEx/the Post Office brings you a package, they will leave a note in your mailbox and leave the package in the office.

I got one of the notes one day, which meant that my mail-away Docs were here!  Excited, I took the slip into the office.  The girl at the desk, probably by design, was incredibly smoking hot and I had chatted her up a few times.  So she opens the closet to get my Docs, and comes out with the bright white mailer boxes with the GI Joe logo emblazoned across them.  She didn't say anything or even give me a funny look, but I was still kinda embarrassed.

"Real, real smooth," I thought to myself.  I mean, what was I gonna say, "So, when you get off you wanna come play with my Doc?"  Might get arrested for that one...

Customs / A Custom I Would Love to See
« on: August 05, 2009, 11:22:49 PM »
Looking at the TRU exclusive ROC Firefly, I had one heck of an idea.  Unfortunately I do not possess the skills to see this idea come to fruition, but I'm sure there's someone out there who does.

I'd love to see someone take the TRU Firefly...and make a custom JoeCanuck out of it.  That figure would be just about perfect...all he needs is a stocking cap!

I'd pay for that one.

Off Topic / So, what do you guys drive?
« on: August 03, 2009, 07:41:12 PM »
So just exactly what do you guys tool around in up north?  I know you don't have the benefit of it very rarely freezing, so a rear-drive overpowered sports car year-round is probably out of the question.

Me, I'm a die-hard Ford man.  My baby is a 2002 Mustang GT.  I've put a lot of $ and a lot of work into it, and everything short of the exhaust and the gears either I've put on myself or with the help of my buddies.  It's got headers, an x-pipe, SLP catback exhaust, K&N cold air, a 75mm throttle body, a Professional Products upper plenum & Typhoon intake manifold, underdrive pulleys, 3.73 gears, MSD coil packs, a Tri-Ax shirfter, & a SCT Livewire programmer.  I'm pushing 350-375 horses, and I left it looking bone-stock on purpose, because it sure is funny to see the look on a new Mustang GT or an LS1 Camaro owner's face when they try to mess with me and I kick their butts!

General Joe Talk / Did some Joe shopping today...
« on: August 03, 2009, 06:52:56 PM »
So since today was my day off I decided to do a little Joe shopping.  I hit up just about every store in town as you will soon see.

Three Wal-Marts (one Super, two regular)
Two HEB Pluses
TRU
Target

The Super Wal-Mart and one regular WM had all the same guys you see over and over again...Destro, Zartan, Neo-Viper, Wave 1 Baronness, Duke, etc.  I was especially annoyed with the Super WM as they had one VERY tiny little section for ROC Joes, but the aisle opposite of them...the entire aisle...was Transformers.  C'mon, Hasbro, couldn't you work out a deal to do half-and-half?  The other Wal-Mart didn't have jack diddly, though to be fair it looked like they were in the middle of a minor rearrange/remodel.  But I had high hopes for it because it's a crappy old WM in a crappy part of town...but I found a lot of good 25th stuff there back in the day (Wraith, Mutt & JY, Croc Master, etc).  Oh well.

TRU had the same stuff it had the other day.  Buncha BBQs and Fireflys, with the rest wave one stuff.

The two HEB Pluses (HEB is a Texas grocery chain.  Their Plus stores are absolutely gargantuan and very nice.  Best way to describe them is a very nice Super WM or Target minus the clothes section) had only first wave stuff, though one did have both the Joe and Cobra 5-packs on clearance for $20.

Which brings me to Target.  Target has a large ROC section in the main toy aisle and TWO endcaps with ROC stuff.  It was all the same stuff too...until I noticed the new exclusive Eel w/Wave Crusher, CLAW w/Air-Viper Commando (purple repainted 25th AVAC) and the Air-Assault Glider w/Grand Slam.

I picked up the Eel & Wave Crusher.  I started to pick up all three but I'm on a limited Joe budget until I get my bonus check, and I'm holding aside funds in case I find an Agent Helix or a Pit Commando.

When I get said bonus check I'll be going back to Target to pick up the new PIT and the other exclusive figures, so if anyone wants them lemme know.
