Title: More of Morgardee's Customs
Post by: morgardee on October 12, 2011, 09:52:26 AM
Things have been pretty quite around here lately.

I thought I'd post some more of my customs.

For now it's mostly those chrome SNAKES I mae a while back, but I'll add other stuff later.

This one was the first attempt at getting a SNAKE done in chrome red. As you can see, it came out looking more Orange:

Even I sort of scratch my head at that one. I have two of them so I'll probably sell one on Ebay some time. I just don't know what sort of demand there is am orange chrome snake. It's unique to say the least and I doubt you'll ever see another one anywhere else.

Maybe I'll just hang it from my Christmas tree...  :-\

BTW, anyone got a right arm for my Red Shadow figure? I forgot he had a broken thumb.

It's the Hazzard Viper's S.N.A.K.E. armour!!!   ;)

Hee hee. That'll work.

At least it sounds better then "Tangerine Trooper".

Wait, I got it now. It should have been for the Joes. It's Ice Cream Soldiers personal escape armour!

Thanks!

Here it is. The very last Chrome SNAKE I had made. This is a one off. The others I did in sets of 2 but made just one of this one.

My idea at the time was it was for Black Ice, as his personal escape armour.

In the first picture I have the standard Black One from Target for comparison.

If you're going to sell the orange chrome SNAKE, describe it as "copper"!
I love the pictures of Black Ice getting helped into his suit, like diving gear.

Great! I love it! Like formbx257 said, I like this scenario. It makes it very original.

Thanks for sharing!

Everyone has their own take on the Steel Brigade figures. I like the outfits but hated the masked heads that come under the helmet, so I fixed that. In my G.I. Joe world, Steel Brigade don't get cool codes names until they rank, so they give themselves code names.

There's a Slayer Design head in there, couple of JvC heads, one Hulk Buster trooper head and a Rampage head in the mix.

From left to right they are: Grizzly, N00b, Reed (team leader), Playboy and Red Neck.

This is a total LBC but it works. I wanted to make tribute to the original Ripcord.

Ripcord body and Indian Jones charter head.

I never did come up with a name for this one. He's a Cobra Stealth Guy. Maybe I'll just call him C.S.G. for now.

When I had a couple of Sky Sweeper jets chromed a while back I had a surplus of Air Raid figures. The head came from a grab bag of random heads from Slayer Design Studios my wife bought me for Christmas last year.

Huh. I never thought of that. OK then. He's Night Vulture 2.0 then.

I should put more of my stuff up here and let you guys name it.  ;)

For the past 8 months or so I've been building a small team that works under Captain Ruin called "The Choir" (Thanks Ryan  ;) )

Most of these are rit dye bodies, touch up paint and Slayer Design Studios heads. Two of the heads were once again from the random grab bag of heads you could get from SDS.

Here's the team shot:

The Knights of the set:

The female is Lasciel. Her name omes from "The Dresden Files", my favorite series of books. Her head and body are from SDS, arms and legs from ROC Scarlet and Baroness skirt and CC comic cape.

The male for now is Templar, but that might change. Head and body from SDS, the rest is Elite Viper and Odin's cape (Thor). There is suppose to be a loin cloth on his groin but I didn't care for the still plastic one that came with the kit, so I'm looking for a small blue cloth I can someday attach.

The stealth of the team is this unnamed dude:

This is one of the grab bag heads on a ROC Storm Shadow body. Originally the body was white, but that looked too much like Storm Shadow, so I tried to dye it yellow. Yellow dye looks awful, so I had to go black. The black actually worked and I'm pleased with the results.

For now his name is Yakuza but I'm not really sold on that.

Another random SDS head brought about the next figure. He's got the whole dark cowboy look going. SDS grab bag head, Winter Storm Shadow body, Tomax forearms and hands. He needs a name:

Last dude. I really wanted to see what this head looked like, so I bought one. Didn't know what to do with it for a while but I was looking at my pile of Neo Viper bodies and realized the vest is bulky enough to work with the head. Then I needed a bulky body so I pulled apart one of my older customs for a Frostback Trooper V2 and put this guy together. It works. he looks big and chunky. I call him Grind.

So 2 of these guys need name suggestions.

Wraith and Wild-Draw?

Spectre and Rough-rider?

Ghost and Cowboy?

Night Shadow and Vaquero? (Mexican equivalent to Cowboy)

Blade Storm and The Dude.

Don't get me started on how over used the name "shadow" is in the G.I.Joe universe. ;)

I sort of like "The Dude" for the gunslinger. Reminds me of The Big Lebowski.

The hyperactive ninja fellow still needs a good name.  Usually I like the names to mean something I can relate to.

Keep the suggestions coming!

Shadow overused? is it? can't be as overused as 'Viper'....
Title: Re: More of Morgardee's Customs
Post by: morgardee on November 28, 2011, 11:20:40 AM
Yeah, but "Viper" became the default grunt rank in the Cobra hierarchy.  "Shadow" as a unique character name or troop builder has been over used:

Shadow Strike
Shadow Tracker
Shadow Viper

plus Storm Shadow.

Enough of that. Here's another custom I made. I updated Timbit. Basically it's a repainted Wolverine figure but hey, if a Mego Dukes of Hazard figure can be used for the original, why not use a Marvel Universe for the update, right?

Title: Re: More of Morgardee's Customs
Post by: morgardee on November 30, 2011, 08:47:18 AM
Thanks guys! The Urban Strike Gung Ho head (and body) are from Slayer Design Studios. Seriously, anyone who is into custom work or upgrading some of Hasbro figures that had poor mold choices should be checking them out.

The "green guy" is a LBC. It's the assault on the Pitt TRU exclusive Zartan body with a Beachhead head. The cap and gun are from Marauder gun runners. The clip you see on the side of the gun is not a heat beat monitor but that's a great idea. It's an ammunition box.

The figures in order are:

Urban Strike Gung Ho - Slayer body and head, Urban Strike Snake Eyes for the rest.
Updated Clutch - Clutch Head and legs, Rampage body.
Ripcord - Ripcord body, Indian Jones figure head.
"Downtime" Beach Head - Attack on the Pitt Zartan body, Beach Head comic pack 2 pack head.
"Green shirt" Rampage - Clutch body, Rampage head and legs.

This one is another Slayer Design Studios head. I remember when the Rock Viper first came out I thought "Good looking body but that head is a joke", so I got in touch with Slayer Dave. I have no idea if the plans were in the works or not, but they came out with 2 beautiful Rock Viper heads. One with mustache and one without.

The Rock Viper went from a mediocre to one of my favorite remake Cobra figures:

Now I just need another Rock Viper so I can put the clean shaven head on a body.  ;)

Thanks! I can' express how please I am with this figure now. It really shows how much a good head can make or break a figure. Hasbro dropped the ball IMO when they took the short cut and gave us that generic head. He looked more like a Joe then a Cobra with that head.

Currently I don't see the head up but keep checking back. Slayer Dave closed the store down for a bit so he can focus on his project A.R.A.H. but after a few weeks opened it back up with a smaller inventory. They have the mold for the heads and won't destroy them and he is VERY easy to talk with. Shoot him an email and ask. The orders are being made per request and not stocking parts right now, so you'll probably be waiting more then a month to be honest, but it's worth it.

I REALLY need a better camera. My biggest problem is the flash on the camera I have wipes out a lot of the detail. One of these days I'll pick up a canon Rebel and be set for life.

That said, I made a Canadian Strike team over the Christmas break using some of those parts I got from that big order I placed with Slayer Design Studios.

The guy in the middle is an older custom of mine. This was made a while back, probably over 1.5 years ago. I named him "Maple Pride" but honestly think the name is a bit weak.

The guy on the right is an older custom from the same time as Maple Pride but I switched out the head. This characters name is "Red Fox".

The one of the left is the newest of the batch and I just finished it on the weekend. The body is from SDS as is the head. I wanted a heavy gunner for my team. For now the place holder name is "Lynx". Lynx is a great name, but I hate using names that already in use in the Joe universe and the Lynx is a vehicle.

I love the Canadian flavour of your customs! :)

Thanks! I remember reading a Batman comic years ago when someone asked Batman why he wore the bat symbol in the middle of his chest. he said it gave the villains a target to shoot at and that was where the bullet proof armour was the strongest.

That would help Maple Pride and Lynx but Red Fox is doomed.  ;)

Then again, he is suppose to be the team sniper so maybe he won't be seen.

Awesome strike team, looks like they'd be a perfect Joe Canuck sub-team!
Lynx's maple leaf is kind of hard to see on the chest (I'm guessing the flash is to blame?).  Speaking of which, I would'nt worry about re-using names, Hasbro did it all the time.
Skystriker, Ferret, Viper and Falcon are all figure and vehicle names.

Title: Re: More of Morgardee's Customs
Post by: morgardee on January 06, 2012, 08:40:16 AM
Thanks guys. I'm glad you like it. I also think these guys "fit" with the CJC stuff, but that's probably because I dyed all of last years figures and painted 6 of 8 bodies plus painted the Valkyrie heads.  ;)

I still wish I had a better camera. The detail on Lynx's head just doesn't show at all in the pictures. The Maple Leaf is a bit hard to see on his head as well but that's because the base of he figure is red with a dry brush silver over top, so red on a silvery red body means something is going to get lost in the details. My base coat for the body was white but that just looked wrong. Lynx probably had the most different parts:

SDS Head and body
Tomax biceps and loer legs.
Storm Shadow lower arms
Charbroil upper legs.

Originally he was suppose to have Charbroil arms but when I glued the torso together I got a drop of crazy guy inside the left arm joint and it fused together, making the left arm not move. I didn't want it half done, so I had to replace it and I went the opposite direction. Instead of having well protected arms I opted for the muscle guy look. I threw in the Storm Shadow lower arms to make him look more savage. I think it worked. That and I sliced up my fingers pretty good getting both the  Tomax and Charbroil figures apart. I miss just a simple screw in the back.   :'(

He's the big "secret" from this set. All the maple leafs are temporary body tattoos. I still need to pick up a clear coat to seal them, but as long as you don' touch them a lot they look great.

Been a while. I've still been making customs, I just don't bother much with my camera. Anyhow, snapped off a few pics this morning.

This is my most recent figure and is one of my top 3 favorites. Here's a little back ground info on this one and how it came to be. I'm a huge Call Of Duty fan. Since I'm not working on the CJC stuff anymore I've had lots of time to game and I'm on level 30, prestige 2.  ;) I've also had more time to tinker with my own customs. This one I finished while watching a show call "Ink Masters". Not a great show but it was more background noise while working. I did pick up something though. They were talking a lot about shading and hard lines. This figure I wasn't going to bother a lot with the body as usually I like to focus on the head. This time I really focused on trying to make all the small details on the body "pop". I'm very please with the results.

And since I know of only one other huge Call Of Duty fan and I didn't really have a name for this guy when building him, I've dubbed him "Sundance" in honour of my fellow CoD fan on these very boards.

Still playing MW3. I keep saying I'm going to pick one of my other games but end up back at MW3. I did play WM2 recently just to unlock trophies. I just need to beat "Pit Boss" in under 30 seconds and I'll get my platinum trophy for MW2. MW3 I have long way to go. Need to make it to at least level 10 in all special Ops missions and beat all of the Special Ops missions on veteran. That requires my buddy Mikey and I being on line at the same time and will not be easy.

I wasn't really blown away with this one. It's Snake Plisskin from Escape from New York but the head just doesn't do it for me. The body was easy. That's just a General Hawk figure body from ROC. I didn't need to do anything and it was almost perfect.

I started to work on a new Joe team a few weeks back simply titles "The Vets". The idea behind it is simple, not every biker is thug or Dreadnok wannabe. One day while waiting for Clutch to finish some custom work on their bikes, Grizzly and L.K. (Lady Killer) were at local bar, playing a game of pool. In walks Dreadnoks Thrash, Zanzibar and Monkeywrench laughing at the "poor Joey" they just beat up for not giving them free repairs. Grizzly and L.K. are former war vets and don't take kindly to people ganging up 3 to 1 on anyone, so they wipe the floor with the Dreadnoks, sparking a Dreadnok vs retired Vet feud.

While not officially part of the G.I. Joe team, they are welcomed allied and sometimes informants for G.I.Joe.

These guys are my favorite current project and I want to add at least one more figure to the set.

I was doing a black rit dye job and threw in some leftover parts. Not sure if I like him or not as I'm tired of doing black rit dye jobs but it is easy to work with. He reminds me of Black Ice.

SDS head
Zartan resolute body, upper arms and web gear
Air Raid Legs
Neo Viper lower arms.

The new Iron Grenadier is a cool figure but once Hasbro cut back on costs and removed the multi paint layers off the figure he was a boring grey.

For once going black made sense, so I gave him a turn in the rit dye, painted the helmet by hand and gave the arms a red base on the pads followed by a dry brush silver coat.

Works perfectly with the 25th anniversary Iron Grenadier figures and is totally safe to play with.

Thanks! To be honest I was on the fence about the Black Cobra I made. I've very tempted to paint him brown and green but then I'd have to worry about paint cracking, etc... So for now I'll leave him "as is". Still, I'm just not sold on that one.

Maybe a cool name for him would change my opinion.

For now I'll call him "Storm Tracker Strike Viper".  ;)

As for the beard on the other Joes, all those heads I've been working with are from Slayer Design Studios.

They have a new one up that looks pretty cool that I want to work with and maybe make a new version of Shiver:

My favorite to date of all customs / projects I've worked on is Metal Head. I LOVE this figure. Totally playable and I've been planning this one for a couple of months. Once I had the parts I had it done in a few days.

Body and legs: Recondo
Upper Arms: Neo Viper
Lower Arms: Resolute Zartan
Backpack and gun from Duke. The backpack makes a lot more sense on Metal Head then it did with Duke.
Head: SDS http://slayerdesignstudio.3dcartstores.com/Head-44_p_2129.html (http://slayerdesignstudio.3dcartstores.com/Head-44_p_2129.html)

Popped the body apart, rit dyed the lower body, legs, back and arms and back pack all black. Hand painted the chest black, straps grey, clips on straps silver, shoulder pads and shin guards red and of course flesh tones on face and neck, hair goggles, etc...

This figure is the main reason why I recently did a black dye job. All the other figures that I've posted recently that are black were just thrown in the pot so I didn't waste the dye.  ;)

It's going to be a while before I can top Metal Head but I'll keep trying.

This is a very simple one that has grown on me. I have probably 30 of these Neo Viper commando figures and for a while I've been saying the body is highly underrated. Yes and no. The body itself makes a good blank slate to build off and new web gear goes a long way for him but the upper legs are a bit dull and the forearm pivot is a bit odd compared to swivel / bending wrists.

So it's a good foundation for customs. I'm a bit of an army builder, so when the 25th anniversary Vipers came out I thought they were awesome. Now compared to the 30th anniversary Vipers they are just not as cool. So that left me with lots parts to work with.

This is an easy custom.

Neo Viper body
25th Viper head and vest.

Thanks Nighthawk. Some customs don't require 3 days to build to look good. The Neo Viper is a good example of that.

I'm sort of in limbo right now. I've done a few more customs but nothing has that "wow" factor. I finished an Iron Claw figure but he just doesn't blow me away. I'll have to take pics and post him some time.

Case in point, this is a total lazy custom. It looks fine but doesn't have an flair that says "I made this". It just lazy part swapping:

I've got a big bag of parts en route to me from the US. When that arrives hopefully it will have new web gear that will inspire me to take this guy in a new direction.

SDS Head
Rumbler body
Resolute Beachead arms and legs.

They look good.  I want to make an Iron Klaw too but just don't have the parts.  Looking for the SRO Destro that has purple trim and a Cobra CLAWS head before I can start.

Ambush is good too.  I don't like painting at all, so my Ambush was done using POC Dusty and no painting was required...however, I had to remove paint...haha.

A few years back there was a few G.I. Joe sized females in bikinis. The were in fixed posses and I think Loop put them in the free table.

I grabbed a couple with plans to make something of them some day. This is the end result of decapitating one of them:

I didn't change the body much at all. My wife thought the yellow worked with the head, so I just added some urban camo stripes so it had some sort of custom paint on it.

I really don't have a name for her now, so I'm just calling her "Blondie". Yeah, not very creative.

I glue some Baroness glasses over her cartoonish eyes, painted her pink hair yellow, had to cut off her hair and re-glue it back on to work around the glasses and drill out the head to fit. She can look left to right but due to the depth of the hole in the head she can't really look up or down.

Still, minimal paint means she is fully playable.

If anyone knows what line of dolls these came from, please let me know. I'd like to get some more of these heads.

Thanks.

Captain Ace body, Resolute Ripcords helmet, Destro head (the one with the big gun and suit case full of money), a swim in a bath of black rit dye and red paint for the highlights. I'm loving this figure.

Lt Peck was hand picked by Captain Ruin to be in charge of recruiting young confused young people to join the Cobra Youth movement. He is a former Lieutenant of the British Army who was dishonorably discharged from service for reasons unknown to most of the lower to mid ranking Cobra troopers.

Lt. Peck has turned down every code name given him. He insists his rank is Lieutenant and it's his desire to rise in the Cobra ranks and keep his name at the same time. When addressing men under his command he always asks their name and address them by it, never using the word "Viper" unless he is disgusted with the performance of a trooper.

Behind his back the others call him "Silver Tongue". He knows it's his unofficial name and while he hates codes names, that one doesn't offend him as it suits him. He will never respond to the name, but does not feel the need to punish his recruits for calling him when they think he's not listening.

During a training mission Captain Ruin asked him what he thought of his unofficial name. He told Ruin "Code names are for people with something to hide sir, but if they have to call me something at least it's something that is agreeable".

Funny thing is I think that's the same head the GIJCC used on this years IG 2 pack as "sergeant major".

Anyhow, today was a nice day, long weekend, wife and son taking abreak from the sun, so I got my new Canon Rebel T3i for my 40th and I was itching to test it, so I did some pictures.

The background on these is simple. They are not customs per say. I was looking at the movie figures and I realized there is a lot of details on these figures. Hasbro just got cheap on the paint apps. I painted detail onto some of the web gear, did a dry brush on the G.I.Joe troopers body, painted some blades, etc...

Thanks. It's really just the little things that can really pull a figure together. Paint the clasps silver on a the vest, the padding green, the bladed weapons silver, do a dry brush layer, paint the back packs a more believable colour. Things like that. Again, I'm not really calling them customs but trying to highlight the details that someone took the time to sculpt. It really a shame Hasbro opted to overlook the details and just give us these one tone figures. The G.I. Joe trooper is an excellent figure, he just doesn't look it.

Not a Joe but still a very cool piece, this was suppose to be Skywarp but now I want to name him "Night Boomer" as a tribute to Night Force:

This is NOT a custom. It the GIJCC Stealth Paratrooper from this years convention. The only thing that is custom is the vest. I just threw it in the rit dye. Soft rubber like this LOVES rit dye.

Dalton and I were painting Joes a while back and he really got back to basics and working with ARAH figures again.

I got a TON of spare parts for ARAH. I don't want to guess how much but it's a lot. Some decent army builders like Alley Vipers and Vipers are in the bin (nope, I'm not selling). So I got in the mindset  that these parts have been sitting around for over 5 years doing nothing. That helped me take the blinders off and able to say anything goes. No holding back because "this guy is an army builder" or "that piece is rare".

With a new relaxed attitude I went to work.

I started to think about the Joe Canuck meet. The event that happened before the meet became the G.I. Joe Canadian convention, when things were more laid back. That is what I wanted to try to build off.

Here's the end result:

who's starboy?

That's the new one I made. Like most of my customs I didn't bother to name him. The star was a sticker from some random vehicle I had kicking around. I felt the chest was a bit empty and it needed something.

Since you asked, I just googled "Winter weather" and came up with something. Call him Graupel. Sounds french to me.

Graupel: Small pellets of ice created when supercooled water droplets coat, or rime, a snowflake. The pellets are cloudy or white, not clear like sleet, and often are mistaken for hail.

He's another picture of Graupel.

Thanks. The camera really pulls out all the details I overlook like the face on Graupel. Looks like I didn't clean on the yellow off it when I tried a yellow dry brush on it. I didn't like the yellow so I went with orange / red.

Next challenge I gave myself was to take a bunch of crappy parts and try to make something good. I started this one with my son in the summer. It came about when he found the Raptor cape and put it on the Snow Serpent body. I thought the Snow Serpent body sort of looked like tiny feathers so I made a guy to counter Raptor.

Since it was revealed that Joe Canuck is African American this year and last year we revealed that rookies for the Canadian Joe team all wore red (Valkyrie and Trace Route) I made Joe Canuck as a rookie.

Pretty easy. The body was just a red rit dye job I did a long time ago the the head was painted red.

Last year when I was at the G.I. Joe convention with Jon he asked if I could make him a custom Night Force Law.

I don't customize much anymore so it took me a while but I finally got around to it.

I also did a few others just for giggles. I didn't want to waste a whole pot of black Rit dye.
