Very impressive, although the character shelves are much more chaotic than the army builder shelves.

It's pretty cool.  I've never REALLY understood Army building to the extent that you do it, though.  I can see five, even ten figures looking pretty intimidating...  but I'm counting 60 Vipers alone!  That's pressing $600 just in vipers!  More power to you, if you can swing it, though.

Looks good. Only change I would have made would be to keep all of the Python Patrol figures together.

Whoo-wa! That's pretty sweet. My question is do you do anything with all those figures or do they just sit on the shelf. Can an army builder ever have enough of one figure?
Title: Re: My 25th collection so far shelf by shelf
Post by: Bandalero on October 08, 2008, 05:16:08 PM
wow thanks for sharing, I never get tired of looking at other people's massive armies.  If you can afford it why not right?  For me they'd just be sitting on the shelf, there's no way I could play with 100 BATs even though I love em!  But your army building persistance really shines through to army build that Viper and his awful hands like that!
Title: Re: My 25th collection so far shelf by shelf
Post by: FastFord58 on October 08, 2008, 06:23:37 PM
Well, all I do is look at them at the moment. I would like to take a room in my house and make a massive diorama at some point, but that is too much work and too little time at the moment.

Typically I shoot for 30 troops for normal conscript type troops and 5-10 for specialty stuff. Now that Hasbro has been releasing stuff at an accelerated rate, I will be sticking to those limits more. I ended up with multiples of 60 because of the time between releases. I also pick up lots if the price is right. I got 20 Fred Crimson guards for like 60 bucks awhile ago which is why the CG numbers are up there.

I have another 10 snow Serpents coming because of the Extreme Conditions set and I have 20 BATS coming which will put me at 30 of those. I wouldn't mind having 60+ BATS.

I also don't build non-military type figures like Ninjas although I typically end up with more than 1. I think I have about 16 Red Ninjas but I haven't opened them yet. I tend not to build vehicle armies either which is also the reason for lack of Hiss Drivers and Stinger Drivers. One of each vehicle suffices except I ended up with 3 of each of the Rattler and Conquests. I just love the big planes.

I don't plan on building the resolute or movie figures either. Just the stuff I grew up with.

Holy troopers.  :o

I have that same shelf (the "wood" one) my indy figures are on it and some batman.
Title: Re: My 25th collection so far shelf by shelf
Post by: Bandalero on October 09, 2008, 11:10:18 PM
question: do you take breaks after opening sets of these troops?

I think I was telling Pete the other day that it was tiring just opening 10 BATS one after the other (the most I have of one figure btw), I don't know how you guys do it.
Title: Re: My 25th collection so far shelf by shelf
Post by: FastFord58 on October 10, 2008, 09:23:19 PM
I have to be honest. I hate the actual opening process. Usually I am opening 20 or more figures at a time and it becomes very tedious. I guess I do take breaks because but it is to my detriment because stuff builds up fast. I have at least 7 5-packs sitting to be opened, 20 BATS, 10 cases of Desert/Arctic packs waiting to be opened. Not to mention I have the Fang/Claw wave of vehicles and a Rattler and Conquest to sticker. I hate stickering more than opening figures.

I find the BATS very easy to open actually. For the most part they are already in a good standing position. I just stick them on the stand and put the extra hand on the backpack. Next to BATS, Crimson Guards stand very nicely.

The real pains are the figs heavy on accessories or the ones that have quirks.

Snow Serpents are tough because they have a lot of accessories. I put the missile on the backpack and to do that I move the missile launcher stand to the other side. On top of that, the knee and feet joints tend to be really loose under the weight of them.

Vipers have weird ankle joints that you really have to work to get them to stand straight. The hands don't bother me and actually work well with the weapons.

Air Troopers are back heavy and tend to have loose leg and knee joints. They fall the most with little provocation.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but are the Python Patrol CGs customs?  I didn't think that wave was anywhere near being out yet.

Those are Wave 12 PP CGs. They came from Hong Kong.

Is it cheaper to get them in bulk from Hong Kong?

It depends what you are after. These particular ones I paid about $7 a piece after factoring in shipping but they came loose with  no file cards. Generally I steer away from the figs from Hong Kong because they usually come lacking accessories. These were complete so I snapped some up. It just saves me from having to track them down later on.

Just like FastFord58, I had a vision/goal, similar to the massive diorama.  But it's not going to happen.

As for the 25th figures, I have set a small cap number for army builders. 10 to 12 is the max.  Only the Crimson Guards, Viper (don't know why for such a crappy figure) and comic pack Iron Grenadiers have reached the cap.  The Snow Serpents and Bats are reaching that number.  Otherwise, I don't want a huge number of the others.  I have enough of the ARAH versions.  So more power to FastFord58 for buying up to 30 of the newer figures.

I am not a fan of the wooden stands used for displaying the figures.  Too much space between the shelves.

As for the Snow Serpent snow shoes, I just put the shoes back to back and fix then in between the bipod space.

Wow, my cap is 5 of each, that's as large as my army builders get, and so far I've only managed to do that with a set of DTC Vipers. Though I only have two CG's to go for my 25th.

holy....I'm counting 70 odd carded figs in that Part 1 pic!  Say average is $10 per card and we're already at $700, with some added weight for shipping and it's close to $750!

So umm, who should I send my resume to at your work?

I gotta say it's really impressive seeing all those carded figures, by the time Joe's 50th anniversary rolls around these kind of pics will be golden (like how we appreciate any MOC 80s pics).  But I do feel sorta sorry for you bro, you won't see the light of day for months trying to open all that up!  :)

Never thought about that. Better keep the pics in the archives lol.

As far as opening goes, I'll try and get to most of it in the next few days. Single cards aren't so bad once you get a groove going, but the EC sets might take some time.

Also, this is bad because I'm leaving space on the shelves for more. I'll be making a similar sized order within a month or so and then I REALLY need to cut back. The movie line and my lack of plans to build the resolute line are going to help the cut back.

I guess it's safe to assume the 30 army builder number doesn't apply to the B.A.T.s   I know I broke my cap number of 12 with the B.A.T.s. as this piece of plastic crack is hard to pass up.

oh man tell me about it.  Wife and I went by Markville Mall yesterday and TRU had a case of canadian carded wave 9 - of course I had to pick up the single BAT and Snow Serpent there.  I'm trying to use them all for trade bait - I have 5 BATS and 1 Snow Serpent on eBay right now, but I might just break down and keep them all!!!

so far the most i have is 10 BATS + 1 Cartoon accurate BAT (DVD pack)

Do you keep the packaging? I just tossed a bunch of Transformer boxes because they take up too much space but I tend to keep the Joe packages. I slice the bubble with a knife just around the one side so if I wanted I could put the figure back in down the road.

I keep the card backs uncut, but I bin all of the plastic.

I notice its just figures. I guess that means all your troops do a lot of walking? I think you should expand to vehicles as well.  That would be cool cause who doesn't want an army of air chariots? As a side effect you might also clean out those first wave vehicles for the rest of us.
*snicker snicker* kidding of course. Obviously with you being back logged I'd be willing to help you hold some of those toys :shifty:

I have at least one of each of each of the new vehicles plus a slew of the classic stuff. Some of the newer ones I have 2 or three of, but to be honest, I don't have enough room to army build vehicles. My joe room is very small. I have a Flagg set up that spans the entire length of it and most of my vehicles sit on that lol.

I can move my little girl out of her room and set it up real nice like. ;D

I'm really impressed on how many people actually army build so many different figures.

I am happy with my collection in the sense that it is a nice piece of nostalgia for me.

Am I happy like...it makes my life complete happy? No, not really. It is just "stuff" after all. I have a wife and 2 children that make me a lot happier than this stuff. I would sell all of that stuff in a heartbeat if I had to for the family.
