Time to let your creativity show!
We here at Joecanuck love the "Joecanuck Universe" that we've created. Black Ice, the H.A.T.E tank, Snowbank and of course Joecanuck himself, as well as all the other figures and vehicles that are part of our universe are things we are very proud of.
However, we want to see what YOU would do to add to this universe!
As such, we're holding a contest to see how YOU would do it! We realize that not everyone is a customizer, so we're not making this a 'customs' only contest. You can submit whatever you like. Art with a bio, blueprints of a vehicle, a short comic, dio, or of course a custom figure or vehicle! If you want to do something different than those, go ahead, but check with us first via a PM. This is about creativity, and different people have different creative gifts so we don't want to leave anyone out!
The Rules:
1) Each board member may submit one (1) entry to the contest.
2) Board Members must have a post count of above 5 and be a member for one (1) month to participate
3) Entries may be in the form of your choice, but note rule #1 above, so make sure you choose the format you're happiest with
4) Entries will be accepted until 10pm EST on Friday, May the 14th
5) Voting on the entries will begin Monday, May 17th and close Sunday, May 23rd.
6) Entries must be entirely new ideas, not existing Joecanuck or GIJOE universe characters/equipment.
Entries should be submitted to contests@joecanuck.com
Include your real name, your board name and your email address!
If you have any questions, ask them in this thread!
The fine folks at Hasbro and Hunter PR have graciously donated 4 Rise Of Cobra figures to be given away as a contest prize here on Joecanuck. To add to that, I am personally throwing in a Target Exclusive Python Patrol CONQUEST (MIB) to the kitty.
Also, your entry will be used in an upcoming Joecanuck universe comic by our artist and story writer, Jason Loo!
So, get those art supplies ready and let's see what you come up with!
Legalities:
*Rights to characters/items created for this contest will become property of Joecanuck.com and can be used by Joecanuck.com without further permission from the creator/member. Joecanuck.com will allow the creator/member to use their creations for their own personal non-profit uses (personal customs, fan-fiction, dios,) but creator/members are prohibited from the sale of said character/items in any way.
Creator/Member = the person(s) submitting the entry to the contest.
-
What an awesome idea! Can't wait to see what the amazing characters get added to the Joecanuck Universe!
-
A question was asked:
Quick question, if I did a team of customs could that count as 1 entry? Or would it only be one figure.
The answer would be:
You can do a team, however you could not submit individual bios for the team members, rather only a bio describing the whole team and its' purpose.
-
I just have a few questions. What is the criteria for this contest? How will entries be judged? And for those of us who are not familiar with the Joe Canuck universe, where can we find out about it (other than those awesome trading cards! ;D)?
Thanks for the help!

1) Criteria is outlined in the original post. If you have more specific questions, please ask them!
2) Entries will be judged by your peers. It will be an open vote process. Each member being able to vote once per round. Depending on submissions numbers, they may be broken down into groups (customs, arts, bios, stories, dios) and then the top voted of each will be voted against eachother for the final prize. That depends on submission numbers though.
3) Dios, reviews and comics from the newsletters:
http://www.joecanuck.com/site/?q=node/9 (http://www.joecanuck.com/site/?q=node/9)
Generals Joes Reviews;
http://generalsjoes.com/2008/08/29/excl ... n-joemeet/ (http://generalsjoes.com/2008/08/29/exclusives-reviews-canadian-joemeet/)
the trading cards, and if you can find a copy of last years' con comic that helps too. Also, asking questions and having them answered by your fellow Joecanuckers works too!

Cool! Thanks for the links. So basically, we're to be creative and expand on the Joe Canuck Universe in our own way, right?
Sounds groovy! I'll start thinkin' something up!

That's exactly the idea!

two points of clairification, please?
ONE: If you're not creating a custom figure or vehicle, but doing a story, must it be solely new characters or are you allowed to use characters already created. IE If I did a prose story as my entry, could I use Snowbank and Black Ice et al as supporting characters, with new characters Jerry Canuck and Canuck-Viper as the 'starring' hero and villain? or should it solely feature Jerry Canuck fighting the Canuck-Vipers?
TWO: Rather obvious from one, can i do a straight prose text story? I have NO skills in artwork and the only way I could do a custom would be to unscrew the backs of my ARAH figures and switch their heads around... a text story howeever, would be entirely doable for me...

1) You can, however the main focus of the story must be your creation, and it must be a short story/article, not a full on novel (although that would still be cool)
2) Absolutely. The idea of this contest is to allow creativity in all its forms, however the content must be kept in perspective - this is about a toy line, therefore stories with offensive content (foul/abusive language, adult subject matter) cannot be accepted and will be disqualified.
-
PG-13 sorta thing? people get killed but no gory descriptions of the back of the head exploding into a fine red mist as the 9mm slug rips through their cerebellum style of thing?
right.
*puts thinking cap on*
-
I hope nobody laughs at my attempt to make a custom figure and the back story I make for him or her? :-!
-
Back again with some more questions!
You mentioned that the ideas have to be new; no pre-existing stuff. I'm okay with this, but is it alright if we just happen to have pre-existing characters make a guest appearance? I mean, I don't want to have to go make a bunch of civilian plainclothesman customs for a dio, you know what I mean?
Also, will the winner's idea become part of the Joe Canuck canon?
-
Also, will the winner's idea become part of the Joe Canuck canon?
The winners character will be in an upcoming comic by our own Loop, as Stealth stated.
It goes without saying that whatever created character is used, it will become property of JoeCanuck.com - in a sense that we can use it if we wish to. So, while there's no guarantee that the "created character" WILL become part of the Canuck-Verse of characters, there's a good chance it will.
How's that?

When you say "property of JoeCanuck.com," do you mean that we won't be able to use it any more of our fan fictions/projects if we wish to? Again, sorry for asking all these questions.

I guarantee no laughter! I'll make a feeble attempt too. I hope they all get shared.

if i enter a story, can i have multiple new characters and a new vehicle? or has it got to be a new story with one new character?
sorry, only i'm starting work on stuff and i've got two new Joe Canucks, a new Cobra-Canada and a new Cobra-Canada vehicle and i need to know if I have to drop some or all of the ideas...
-

Of course you can use it for fan fiction/customs projects
What Mike means is that if we choose to, we can use the character/vehicle/etc as we like (create the toy, use it in future comics, etc etc).
Meaning Joecanuck.com has exclusive rights to use that character going forward, with no further permission needed by the author/creator of said character/vehicle to use it.

You certainly may have as many as you like, but the main focus should be on one single character/vehicle, and which one that is should be plainly obvious from the story.

Got it, thanks!
I've added a "legalities" disclaimer to the OP to clarify.

i think I'm going to make it one JC and the Cobra-Canada vehicle.

More stupid Questions :o
Does my custom figure have to be Canadian? Please do not ban me for asking this! The figure heads I have to use look more Aussie then Canadian. I guess I can say he was born in Australia then move to Canada?
-
don't see why not, after all, Backstop was born in Canada, moved to America and then joined the Joes.
Hell, he could be on detached duty to the Joe-Can team like Big Ben and Skymate are on TDY from 22 SAS and the SASR respectively.
-
i think I'm going to make it one JC and the Cobra-Canada vehicle.
You should choose 1 of those to be the primary focus.

Canada is full of people who have come here from other countries.
Just because he wasn't born here, doesn't mean he's not Canadian

the character'll be the focus, the vehicle more of a McGuffin

I'm almost done my one of my figures. The other I'm just going to put in the customs section. I'm not sure who I am going to enter in this contest my Cobra or my Joe? Would you guys consider making the winners character apart of the Canadian Joecon figure set this year?
CF :cobra:

I have an idea for two characters, who would constitute a "team" ( or a duo), correct? And their bio would be a summation of who they are as a team?? Or do I have to specific one over the other?
Could I make a request to the legalities of the contest? In addition to the prize for winning, could a stipulation be placed that the winners name ( a "created by......be attached to the creation for all uses henceforth? Also any submitters gain the same privilege IF their work is used in latter material?
This would grant the winner some nice bragging rights, and sweeten the deal for participants even if they do not win.

Including your info with the character each time it's used most likely isn't going to happen.
You will get credit, in the ORDER OF BATTLE section of the annual CanJoeCon Comic that comes with the con set should this character become a full fledged "Joe Canuck used" character. In the 2009 one, whoever did the bio for each character had it marked as so. Example : Larry Hama - Snowbank, Chacal Noir. Ryan Costello Jr. - Back-Stop, etc.
If you need something to sweeten the deal, then maybe this contest isn't for you? I think the prizes are pretty cool in themselves... a bunch of Joe Toys, and your creation in one of our comics. You'll obviously get the credit in the comic - so that alone should be "sweet" enough. ;-)

As a pro cartoonist, you'll have to colour me a little bit "sensitive" about "work for hire" stipulations, contest or not.
I had to ask.

Fully understandable, and a good question. ;-)
Obviously, if you're supplying art, sign it in some way - we'll leave it in there.
-
This contest sounds really cool. I'll have to juggle around some ideas in my head, since I'm not giving up any of my actual OCs to you guys. :p
Wonder if the character will be turned into a future CanJoeCon exclusive...

Same issue with me. I don't want to just "give away' any of my originals but 'm sure I can come up with something to submit.
-

You know... I'll sweeten this thing even more for you guys.
If your character becomes a future CanJoeCon exclusive figure, we'll give you that years con set for free.

You wouldn't be "giving" them to us. Rather, we would have the right to use them. As previously mentioned, you could continue to use them for your own use without issue, you just couldn't give/sell the rights to another entity at that point.
Rather than "giving" us the characters, look at it as giving us the exclusive rights to USE your characters.
-
This contest has really brought up a lot of good questions. Since I'm not an artist and this is my first attempt at a custom, if my figure does get picked (probably not), I'm sure someone will want to update the figurebio to something that makes sence in the Joe Canuck world anyway.
-

Eh, still... I'd rather not have people using Hiryu or Stakeout without my approval of the story, so they're not likely to be submitted.
Hiryu's a cheap Quick Kick knockoff anyway so I doubt he'd even win. :p
There is one character I created before that I've less attachment too. Might see if I can't dig out his original "filecard" and see if I can ellaborate on it.
-
i've created my character specifically for this. and i hope they win, because they're awesome.

Hot Damn! That definitely sweetens things.

I must be getting annoying with my questions, but here's another one: if we're making a custom figure, does it explicitly HAVE to be made of Joe parts?
-

have to? No.
But it needs to be able to "fit in" with existing toys.

Roger that. Don't worry, I'm not making an 9.37"-scale plush animal with glow-in-the-dark ooze, or anything!

It might be helpful if it is made of Joe parts, in case we want to include it in a future convention set:
If your character becomes a future CanJoeCon exclusive figure, we'll give you that years con set for free. /quote]

Ok i have a question, as im sure most of you know by now im not very good at doing the whole writing thing, bad grammer, poor puctuation, and spelling, so if i do a fig or vehicle, does it absolutly have to have a write up? and if so if can i have help on the writing part?
-

There is nothing stating it needs a writeup, although a writeup goes a long way to helping us understand who the character is, what he/she does, etc/

is the 80s with classic ARAH?
an ever-changing present day, like DDP retcon'd ARAH with no reference to dates?
or now, in 2009/2010?
basically, i want to know if my character can be described as having served with regular forces in Afghanistan or do i vague it up?
-
I'd say it's set in the "now". I always assumed the ARAH cartoons and comics were in the "now". So... now.
-
We're still defining the Canuckverse, so I suspect that anything that you write can be retconed in. ;-)
-
-
i'll just keep it vague.
-
i finished my story. whenever it's set, it's after JTF2 was formed and the US Army introduced the SOPMOD version of the M4 carbine...
i ended up writing a seperate story to the one i originally planned, making my character more the star. the first story i started, i will finish and post anyway as a JC fan-fic after the contest is over, whether i win or not.
the second tale's now called 'Joe Canuck: Canada's Elite'.

-
Question about submitting for photos, do you want links to the images/album or do you want a zip with all the pics or does it matter?
Edit: Submitted my entry, I just linked the images, if you need the zips of the images let me know

I assume that voting was delayed by the deadline being pushed back.
I know I'm looking forward to seeing some of the entries, so when will we get to see and vote on the awesomeness that has been submitted?
