Interesting choice of parts on Big Lob. Works much better than the Club's, IMO.

Yeah, I like LJ's Big Lob much better then the Clubs version.  Nice work on all your customs!  Did you create the whole band for Star Wars?

Thanks guys. Aside of these I did some Joe Canuck character customs that are in seperate threads. I'll put pictures of them here, but I'm waiting to complete my next custom (already begun) based on Joe Canuck's Shiver and inspired directly from NeoDragonKnights' 25th transalation design. So stay tuned.

And as for the Cantina band members, I used 5x Tarkin POTF2 figures that I cut off at the waist and took Gentle Giant's Cantina band members mini-busts, and hot glued them altogether. With some final black paint touchups, these took about 30 minutes to create! Basically you can separate the figures and recuperate the mini-busts again if you don't need the figures anymore, which is pretty neat.

The Big Lob was my first contest entry ever for any contest. I actually did it for the custom contest at the 2007 Canadian GI JOE annual Meet. I didn't win the contest ( the winner was a cool looking Ice Breaker custom ) but I won my pride to show it off. I even did a professional looking filecard and artwork for the event, but I was asked to leave it out of the contest by the organizers, due to other participants not creating artwork, which I found kind of unfair at the time, but found totally understable now since the odds were all even this way.

Very nice stuff LJ! Your customs are always great.. the paint is neat and the parts choice is perfect. That Big Lob is a nice representation of him and a better version than Hasbro's one.... but man, that Big Boa.. errrr nope.. don't do that again!...OK?  ??? ;D

Funny that you don't like Big Boa  ;D. Is it because of the figure or the paint, or better yet: Why? I'M just curious....

Theyre's actually a few good stories behind these customs, some stories are actually more interesting than the customs are  :). When I have a chance at it hopefully this weekend, I'll write in a few lines the creative process behing these.

I actually like it quite a lot. I never liked the original Big Boa - maybe because he was never developed as a character, but your pythonized one is actually pretty cool.  Good job.

Your Big Lob is still my favourite. If the club didn't have one, I'd be pestering you to make me one.
Could I convince you to make me a Pythona?...I have some Zanzibar hair begging to be removed!!!

Perhaps that Big Boa is not one of my best works according to you because he's just a straight repaint

But behind the result, there was a noble cause. I did Python Patrol Big Boa to put a very commonly found figure to a good use. Did it ever happen to you to get multiple lots of figures or figure parts only to end up with many incomplete Big Boas, PsycheOuts or Sneak Peaks that nobody really wants or needs? Well it happened to me quite a few many times. So I decided to make a Python Patrol out of Big Boa for the following reasons:

Hehehe!  ;D I just try to be honest LJ! I hope you're not mad at me??  :-[ I don't like it for 2 reasons: paint scheme and paint application. I love your idea and your story behind the Big Python character but I think it would be a better idea to find another body for the figure.. I don't like the way the torso is painted in green and the neck is still colored in flesh. And btw I love the original Big Boa and I have something like 20 of them (I purchased a couple of lots on eBay some months ago so..)
I'll try to post some pics of my customs in the next weeks (they were all made around '93-'95). I think you will laugh a lot cause I don't like any of them, haha! And I love the critics, so you are free to blast them in every way!!  ;D
Personnaly I think you are one of my favorite customizers (your ARAH versions of the JoeCanuck con figures are truly perfect)!!

Thanks Grunt. You were actually the first one to see it in person, and probably one of the only remaining active Joe Canuck members to have seen the cardart I crafted for my Big Lob custom. I will actually bring that cardart for everyone to see along with my customs to display them at the convention. It will be its only moment of glory.

And yes, it is always my dream to make a Pythona custom since I doubt it is in Hasbro's immediate plans and priorities, unless someone can certify that I'm wrong. I'm a big fan of the Sunbow movie and actually embraced the concept of Cobra-La and was a bit sad that we got so few of them in plastic, and that the only ones that we got, could've been so much more. Still, I'll make it one day once I'm done with my custom interpretations of Shiver and Black Ice, that's a commitment.

No worries man. I know that your comments are always very constructive (most of the time). But you don't need to worry about Big Python. He was one of the previous customs I did and I did learn from it. I would like to redo it better one day since I don't have it anymore and I still love the idea, but there are so many custom ideas out there, and so little time to do them all.

I just saw your customs post but didn't have a chance to see them for myself. Will do. I promise that if I have to blast one of your creations, I'll do it in a stylish and sofisticated manner, how's that  ;D ?

Just added a one shot custom I did in 20 minutes  :). I actually was working on my 2010 can joe con costums and stopped for a break. Suddendly I fell upon the head of Astro Viper and a Strato Viper pair of arms. That's when the flash happened. Zero paint required tonight - however: the pants and waist belonged to an aborted custom project that I decided to recycle for this character.

I don't own any of the ARAH Night Force figures yet so I decided to imagine my own, hence Moondancer.

The figure is well done, does it matter if it is or it is not Moondancer?  Hasbro has made alot of figures that are not what they say it is.

Sundance, I must plead ingnorance. I should've searched to make sure the name wasn't taken. I take you're referring to an official AF character? This time it's my bad, let me explain. I usually make sure my character's name doesn't conflict with an official character or someone's creation . In this case, I skipped that stage.

When I decided the name, for some reason, I was thinking the name of 2 SEGA GENESIS. One was called Shadowdancer and the other one Michael Jackson's MOONWALKER. Anyway, the character's name was meant to be directly inspired more Shadowdancer. The fact it's someone that actually uses stealth in the night, that is.

Would it please anyone here if I change the name? Hasbro has had to it before, so why can't I I guess :)

Seriously, I'd do it, let me know.

Pallitoy figure in series 2, came with the Triad.

http://www.bloodforthebaron.com/toys/00 ... index.html (http://www.bloodforthebaron.com/toys/003/af/026/index.html)

come series 3, he was a redeco'd US figure. also sold with the (restickered) Triad.

i wasn't entirely being serious with my 'outraged AF fanboy rant' (though if you'd posted this on BFTB, you'd get it from some quarters).

as for changing the name, that's up to you. there are after all, US and UK characters called 'Breaker', 'Tracker', 'Blast Off', 'Stalker' and 'Steeler' who are different. (well, our Steeler's the US Steeler redeco'd and Greek.)

That beeing said Sundance, It's not as if I mass produced a character that is supposed to be a different take on an official one. Therefore I won't change its name, as I'm confident that it shouldn't affect the reputation of the already existing character.

So there you have it, like it or not, "Night Force" Moondancer...not to be confused with the Action Force's Moondancer.

I feel like opening an account at BFTB, just to rock your AF fanbase for a little while  but I'd be expecting you to to get me out of there before and if it gets too ugly in there!  ;D What do you say?

I really prefer Moondancer v.1 to v.2. I totally dig science fiction inspired characters. Which is why I love Joe characters like sci-fi, Lightfoot and Payload.

if you really want to piss some folks off over at BFTB, all you need to do is say that you hate the straight-limbed Pallitoy figures, the Hasbro ones are FAR superior and you REALLY ought to say you loved the Q-Force set from the US con - especially Natalie Poole.

And also v.1 has nothing much to do in terms of character design with v.2, even if we discard for a minute the articulation differences.

Those are some massive suicide notes you just wrote for me  . They might come in handy to avoid a bloody brawl though. I'm now planning to do an updated ARAH version of AF Moondancer.

well, that's it. series 3 was when the Hasbro articulated figures came in and they used a redeco Zap and a redeco Short-Fuse for the new versions of Moondancer and Dolphin, even though they were going in Pallitoy vehicles. Likewise Wild Weasel became Red Wolf mkII - but not redeco'd - being bunged in with the Roboskull. The Hyena got Hiss Driver (called Hyena driver, obviously), the Wolverine - which previously came with Hunter - got Ton-Up (Rock'n'Roll with no accessories), the Escape Armour came with 'Escape Armour pilot' - basically the HISS Driver - the Silent Attack kayak was redesigned and came with Recondo and the ATC, Pac-Rats, Whirlwind, Attack Cannon (FLAK) and Command Centre were just re-released in new packaging. - the CC having no figures, i believe. the rest of the vehicles were all new Joe stuff and with Joe figs, WHALE, Skystriker, ASP, CLAW, Stinger, Moccassin, SHARC and Swamp Skier

Does Moondancer have apparent ethnic traits in the comic than he does on the figure? I just noticed that his real name is Tariq El Shafei, and well, Moondancer v.1 and v.2 look a bit too...neutral.

uh... dunno. i've only read a limited number of BAF strips since i never read the comic as a kid.

and yeah, he's white because he's got the same head they used for the frogman figures in series 1 and Barracuda, Shark, Dolphin and Hot Jets in series 2.

if you compare the various heads, tehy're basically all the same bloke but either bare-headed, wearing a beret, wool-cap, balaclava-style hood, hood and goggles, officer's cap etc. only a few are different.

Yes it does.

It'll work with a TRAHC Sidetrack or Duke helmet, but not with a ARAH Duke helmet (harder plastic).

You have to wrestle a little bit with the head of Astro-Viper to rest it into the right position.

Thanks OB. Cobra the Aço is one of my personal favorites as well. As for Big Lob, I've been receiving a lot of good comments about him and all I can say is thanks guys. I own the club's version too, and, beeing a fan of a few movies that the late Burgess Meredith appeared in, I can tell you that I was really disappointed with their offering, but very very glad I had mine as a consolation prize. There's no better way to describe the satisfaction and pride I feel about my Big Lob custom. But to tell you the truth, I tried to aim higher at first, and thought I had failed when I finished it. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder in the end, sometimes even the customizer is too demanding of his own work he can't start appreciating what he has accomplished.

What you guys don't know is that I recently worked out a trade with Grunt4mvp and he'll be the new owner of my Big Lob custom. He originally asked me If I could make him one, but I gladly offered him my original and only one since this would also make him happy. Since my two hands and my lucidity haven't given up on me yet, I'll make myself a new one, or learn in time to appreciate the Club's version.

Nothing really worth mentionning...It was a cash value trade in reality, but that's the way the man preferred to go and I got what I needed anyway and he got what he wanted so I'm expecting it was a fair trade. He's getting a piece that I am still very proud of so I am hoping it is going to a good home. But It's no custom I cannot redo again, and I will, and the picture will be updated to reflect the v.2 custom down the road.

Yes, I am known to talk a lot lately about upcoming projects and not getting much done. I guess it would be proper to announce something when there is something to show... and that won't happen until after the Montreal Toy Con. But will do, 5h4rk, that's a garrantee

Newest custom: ARAH style Action Force's Moondancer v.1

Needs some last touch-ups and painting the neck and hood area, and the neat Action Force space force faction sticker, but I couldn't wait to show it now that it's almost complete.

I'll update the picture when he'll be all done. As always, let me know what you think.

There's more pics of the figure at the start of the thread as usual. Enjoy! BTW, the kayak was borrowed from Nathalie Poole.

That's why I was very specific when I said "borrowed". I have a spare Kayak belonging to Stalker but I haven't had a chance to paint it black. Also, I won't temper right now with Poole's still mint boat, no way, that thing wasn't free  :) .

Should I say it? Beaver's custom kayak to follow...  ;D

In the meantime I'll place an order from Cobrastickers for some neat SAS force emblems, that should do the final trick.

The con set last year was Natalie Poole and Dolphin. Natalie is NOT an AF member, she's from Action Man. the set was named as a Q Force set. the Silent Attack Kayak is an SAS Force vehicle.

ergo some members of BFTB (Humby among them) were VERY upset at these mistakes being made. He also flat out hated the figures, calling Natalie 'an East European shot-putter' and Dolphin a 'Chap Mei reject'...

personally, i liked them and hope they lead to Hasbro bringing the AFverse back and doing new figures. even if i do hate the 25th/ROC/POC style articulation.

My Natalie has two right thighs, thus one leg is backwards, so as bad as your friend thought she looks, mine is much worse.

Ed was looking into getting it replaced for me (he picked it up for me) and asked me for some pictures of the problem but I never heard anything more on the issue. I'm guessing they didn't have any spare parts to replace my defective figure. They could have just mailed me the left thigh and I would have fixed it myself.  :'(

All these are great. No probs with Moondancer at all. Your ARAH Beaver is brilliant its what Joecon should have done. I bitched something major when I saw Joecons Q Force effort. Bloody awful is a mild version of what I said. They got it completely wrong with Q Force and did'nt even bother to consult anyone on BFTB for ideas and opinions. Really smacked of arrogance. Thank you for putting it right with your custom. If you want some SAS force decals for it let me know.

Title: TIGER FORCE Grunt custom
Post by: latinjoe22 on October 30, 2011, 10:21:22 PM
Here's something I did in order to "practice" before doing another Tiger Force custom project for a great buddy of mine. Sorry about the bad focus on them pics. The camera got soaked during the summer and it was never the same since... I'm therefore going to have to shop for a new camera soon (or hope I can get one for X-Mas LOL). In the meantime, this is as good as it gets.

It took me about an hour to do. It's not finished (needs some touch-ups) but it's almost there and not looking bad at all. Oh yeah, I'm a huge Tiger Force fan too, and I know someone who's also as much of a Grunt fan here on the boards, perhaps the biggest that I know (looking at you third canucklehead in line at the 2007 Canadian joe meet!) and it's one of the reasons why I made this one. Enjoy ;)

Thanks guy. Don't know if many of you noticed it by now, but I tend to give a second chance to the very underappreciated accessory pack weapons by equiping my customs with them whenever there's opportunity.

One of the reasons that I did this custom was because I wanted to infuse brown into this cutom's color palette, on what better way of doing it but with a very common second generation duke backpack and leatherneck machine gun, complimented with touches of brown enamel paint that just happens to match in heaven with the natural color of the accessories.

I try, whenever it's possible to do it, to choose a paint color that will match as close as possible the original colors of the accessory pack weapons:

Here are a few past projects I did that to illustrate this intent:

Does anyone want to see more Tiger Forced original characters down the road? It's been on my mind lately. I have several original spare parts so I can easily make any of these:

Zap
Clutch (would actually go very well with the Tiger Sting come to think aboot it)
Short Fuze

I have 2 challenges for you:

Tiger Force Mutt
Tiger Force Blow Torch (That should be a tough one to pull off  ;))
Title: Re: TIGER FORCE Grunt custom
Post by: latinjoe22 on November 01, 2011, 12:32:30 PM
Tiger Force Mutt was already done as a convention character therefore he's a low priority right now.

Tiger Force Ripcord is a good idea, since he was originally planned to be re-released in the Tiger Force sub-team by Hasbro back in 1988-89 at the same time as Sabertooth and Wild Bill. A very similar variation of Sabertooth finally saw release years later in the TRU Tiger Force 5-pack but this time they changed the name to Wreckage if memories serve.

I'm currently revisiting the concept for one of them (Ripcord, Mutt, Sabertooth or Wild Bill). It'll be done to go in the typical colors of the convention Tiger Force characters.

@Morg: Blowtorch will be the toughest challenge anyone has ever given me  :P. It is with distinguised honor that I would accept, but I'm missing only the arms and legs and a face mask. If anyone can provide them, you know the drill!

Hey, you're welcome man! That they are Cyber, imaginary or even real Timbits, I'll take them as long as they come from a real Grunt fan like you. Thanks guys!

Come to realize, I do have all the required parts to make a Tiger Force Ripcord so perhaps I will be able to take on Sundance's challenge one of these days.

I'm putting Tiger Force Blowtorch custom idea on the shelves for now until I find the parts that I need to make him.

I hope you do make a TF Blowtorch.  Blowtorch and Ripcord are two of my all time favourite figures.

Yeah, the TF Stalker was a big bowl of "meh" for me.  The sneering Sonic Commando was a weaker mold and the blue was wrong.

You could do a simple one using the 82 or 83 mold.  The tundra Stalker could give you a nice one as well - but I thought V2 would also make a great Night Force guy too (my only attempted custom).

Night Stalker should be a helo pilot from the 160th SOAR; someone who flies Tomahawks or Little Birds into hairy areas to drop off Joes. or extracts them from hairy areas.

I don't think there was anything wrong with the blue, really, as it reminded me of some UK Tiger Force figures from the past. The sculpt they used for TF Stalker is without a doubt the worst existing Stalker figure ever to be molded in our entire solar system, and should never have been glorified as Tiger Force.

It's really easy. the Recipe is an entire Funskool Wild Bill. His main body comes already in orange plastic. He had silver hightlights and a bright blue hat, and some other paint apps were different. Repainting those and adding the stripes were the only modifications needed.

Those arms are from the Funskool version also? They look beefier to me! Tiger Bill has spent some time to the gym I see.. ;-)
