Title: GI Joe Train by OB (Oreobuilder)
Post by: Oreobuilder on June 14, 2013, 03:57:36 PM
I know I have an existing customs thread, but it the mods will indulge me, I believe that this project should have its own thread.  :)

Well, this is it. This is the result of about 5 years of planning and slowly buying train cars.

A little background. At the very start of ARAH 1982-83, Tyco put out a GI Joe HO-Scale electric train set (Pic is from Yojoe.com)

(http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/ab69/Oreobuilder/My%20Customs/GI%20Joe%20Train/trainset-can_zps889d6b6a.jpg) (http://s850.photobucket.com/user/Oreobuilder/media/My%20Customs/GI%20Joe%20Train/trainset-can_zps889d6b6a.jpg.html)

I drooled over this set for a long time. I already had an electric train, so I didn't ask my parents for another. Instead, I played with the one I had and added some green army men and accessories and pretended that it was a GI Joe train. I even played with my regular ARAH figures even if the train was wayyy to small.

When I got back into Joes (2005ish), I discovered that in 1991, Hasbro was thinking of releasing this (again, thanks to Yojoe for the pic)
(http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/ab69/Oreobuilder/My%20Customs/GI%20Joe%20Train/prototype2_zps0842b032.jpg) (http://s850.photobucket.com/user/Oreobuilder/media/My%20Customs/GI%20Joe%20Train/prototype2_zps0842b032.jpg.html)
It never made it to store shelves, but when I found out about it, it reawakened my childhood memories.

About 5 years ago, I decided that it was time to finally make the train that I always wanted for my Joes. I looked into different scales of trains that I could buy and modify. One day, I bought a Playmobil box car on super clearance for 5$. When I stood ME Joes next to it, it looked good, so I set out to buy all the cars and the engine and paint them. After a few false starts and waiting for the latest Playmo train to arrive, here it is: My GI Joe train!

Enough of my ramblings, on to the pics. Enjoy!

That looks like fun. Care to share how you made it? Is it just stickers and Playmobile?

Even the customer figures are great.

Thanks guys.

It is basically various Playmobil trains repainted and with added stickers.  I started by buying train cars - Playmo 2x 4126, 7620. I did not start with the engine, as the one that I wanted was not available when I started the project. I kept being patient over the course of 5 years and this month, finally, they released the engine that I wanted for my train. I received it from Playmobil about two weeks ago and promptly finished the project. This is what the engine looked like before painting:

(http://i850.photobucket.com/albums/ab69/Oreobuilder/My%20Customs/GI%20Joe%20Train/5258_zpsdf9f6b98.jpg) (http://s850.photobucket.com/user/Oreobuilder/media/My%20Customs/GI%20Joe%20Train/5258_zpsdf9f6b98.jpg.html)

The other train cars were similar colors before I started. The cannon is from Hasbro's Star Wars line. It is a Clone Trooper cannon that I picked up at Winners last year (or 2 years ago or something). The Jeep is from Power Team Elite. I picked it up at Hart before that chain went belly up. Basically, I have been putting this project together for years.

It has been an expensive venture, but I've always wanted a train for my Joes, so this is priceless for my collection. Now, I want to clear a space in the basement for it. I have a nice 6'x8' table that I can use. I want to build a diorama to set up the train properly. So the project is not quite finished yet.  :)

Thanks again for all your positive comments. This project has been really well received by everyone who has seen it and I appreciate the responses  :D

It looks so professional!!

The 25th anniversary fig can fit inside the locomotive? That's weird since the Playmobil are smaller than vintage GI Joe (so way smaller than 25th mold).
