Title: Battle Corps Customs by OB
Post by: Oreobuilder on July 31, 2013, 09:48:35 AM
Hi guys,

I have not posted these here yet, but if you follow a couple of other boards, you may have seen these. I put together a project I called ''Battle Corps Month'' over at my blog: http://oreobuildersblog.blogspot.ca/ (http://oreobuildersblog.blogspot.ca/)

I have been rolling out a new custom or the every day during July. All of the customs were based off figures from the 1992-95 era, including DEF, Battle Corps Rangers (a never-produced 1995 sub-line proposed by Hasbro) and, mostly, Battle Corps.

So, since July is over (or will be in a few hours), here is the complete run all in one shot.

Enjoy!

OB

Battle Corps Month Day 12: Grunt and Heavy Duty

The early to mid ‘90s wasn’t all about neon colors and spring-loaded accessories. There were other things happening in the GI Joe franchise. One of those things was the return of 12 inch figures. Branded as ‘’Hall of Fame’’, Grunt and Heavy Duty were introduced in 1992-93 and were part of a 6-figure line-up. They were meant to be ‘’Basic Training’’ versions of the characters and only included their khaki outfits and a rifle.

Some group shots and unfinished WIPs.

July was Battle Corps Month at my Blog: Oreobuilder's Blog (http://oreobuildersblog.blogspot.ca/)

In May, when I began assembling my modern takes on Battle Corps figures, I was planning only a few figures – Beach Head, Wild Bill, three Battle Corps Rangers, a few others. I thought I would roll them out over the course of a week. As I looked at more and more figures, the project grew from Battle Corps Week to Battle Corps Month. All told, the project counts 36 different characters for a total of 44 figures (with multiple troop builders) and 2 vehicles. Not bad for about 4 weeks of customizing.

I started this project as a way of using some of my less used parts and colors. My goal was to make cool customs in a common theme without breaking the bank. The objective was to buy as few parts as possible to complete this. In this aspect, I believe that I succeeded. I wanted to use the parts at my disposal in new and interesting ways. A few customs could benefit from acquiring a few new parts: the Alley Viper’s accessories, the Ice Cream Soldier’s head and a few others come to mind. However, as a whole, I’m super satisfied with the results of this undertaking. I will keep an eye open and if I can ever acquire these parts cheaply, I will improve my customs when I can.

This project was a whole lot of fun to make. It allowed me to use and explore colors, parts and concepts that I usually shy away from because of a lack of realism or wackiness. Now that I have embraced my inner neon, I will be more open to the use of color in my customs. I may revisit this time period at a future date. I picked about three dozen characters for this project, but 1992 to 1995 had many more figures that could serve as inspiration. There are many more Battle Corps figures that could be made – Law, Major Bludd, Dial-Tone, Mindbender, Muskrat, Roadblock and the list goes on. Also, Mail-Away Interrogator, the Arctic Commandos, the Shadow Ninjas or the Air Commandos could all serve as inspiration for a future project. Hmmm, maybe I should look at doing this again…

Thanks for looking and commenting, I hope you enjoyed these as much as I did making them.

As an added treat, here are a few figures that didn’t make the cut. These are still very preliminary WIPs and not necessarily the parts (and certainly not colors) that would have been used for my final customs. Some of these I will probably finish. Others will get parted out again. It will depend when/if I revisit this project at a later date.

Really great to see Colonel Courage revisited. I feel like he was a new character that could've used some fleshing out in any of the fiction. Some nice updates on Mace, Barricade and Wet-Suit too.

I love what I see. I especially admire the parts that you chose to do these customs. I can tell it took a lot of researching and it paid off amazingly. Four thumbs up!  ;D

Thanks guys. I realize that they are not from the most popular period in Joe history. However, in doing research for these, I found that most Battle Corps figures are actually quite a lot of fun. They are not all realistic military, but they have a certain charm.

The fishing rod is actually a nod to Bazooka's file card:
‘’ extensive travelling made Bazooka homesick and long for his favorite hobby: fishing.’’

I kid you not.  ;D

I remember the original battle corps line having some pritty outragous colors. LOUD/bright, bright yellow/ green and orange.
Its supper nice to see the color toned down on these figures. Helps to take them out of cartoon fantasy universe and gives them more of a warm real world look.

Again,,,Awesome work bud,!

i'll be damned, i know i've seen people refer to BC Bazooka as 'fly fisher Bazooka', which i thought was just because he looks kinda like a fisherman, i didn't realise his card actually said that.
