Title: Do you feel like you are always learning something?
Post by: martin-montreal on February 16, 2011, 11:05:51 PM
I'm making my coming out... I don't know everything about GI Joe! That being said  ;D I feel like I'm always learning something new.

I just got those two guys:

And because I'm mainly collecting vintage, I also found two 1984 Storm Shadow backpacks so they can feel like the original SS. But (I see some people smiling)... yes, I didn't know. They don't have a back screw... so they can't hold a backpack on their back  >:(.

And now, If I have to change their o-ring, how do I do?  :-[

you have to have a small screw driver to unscrew the back of the figure. Then you open the figure up. Take off the old o ring (usually done by pulling the legs out from the pelvis. Make sure that the J hook does not break the crotch of the figure. tear off the old o-ring. Then place the new o ring on the J hook. POull the o ring through the pelvis. Sometimes you have to twist the J hook, then place the top of the o ring on the center of the back piece of the figure, carefully lay the arms and head on the back piece, and line up the chest piece. It is best to lay the figure flat when doing this... then re-screw the figure shut

Bandrov, I think Martin is referring specifically to the two Storm Shadows that he got and that don't have screws on their backs. I think what's holding the torso together is industrial glue. Unfortunately I'm no expert in taking off the glue  but I bet you that someone who works at the emergency could tell you how to undo a crazy (glue) bond since they are used to patients that glued themselves together I'm sure

Oops, I did not see the "IF", sorry martin.  I did not mean to insult you.  Have you split torsos on a RoC fig?  If so I think you should be able to do the same.  But vintage figs are not as plentiful as RoCs so if you make a mistake it is not a big deal.

I found this:

I have a mixed method. First I use the Xacto blade under the arms and cut/open it until I get close to the arms. Doesn't have to go really that deep. The I use a spoon. Place the holding part of the spoon under the lower/upper torso section in the back and pull it. It works with most figures specially if they don't have so much glue. Sometimes they don't crack but it is enough to take the upper torso out of the down torso. Once this is done it's much easier to complete the job.

Great question Marty.. I was wondering the same thing! I have some custom projects involving some old Ninja Force figures and I don't know how to open them w/o breaking the torso.. plastics on ARAH figures are not as soft as plastics used on today's figures..

a good option for those figures may be this harness that came with 2009 SS from the five pack:

Plastic back then was so much better (and tastier).

Thanks guys! The good news is I don't have to change their o-ring right now. So I will wait until my figs fall apart...

The 2009 SS backpack is indeed a great idea!

Thanks to all!!

I did it! I found a smart (and lazy!) way to give them a backpack:

When I was young, one of the O-rings in one of my figs broke.  The rear screw was stripped so we couldnt open the torso, so what my brother did was take a ruberband, and then fed it into torso around the peg where the o-ring is suppose to go, then take the 2 ends of the rubber bands and hook them on the T bar hook.  It worked perfectly, you just have to find a rubber band that is a good length so it isnt too loose when you hook them together.

Now that is bright!

The only thing out of the ordinary I did as a kid was "scuplt" new Han Solo heads out of styrofoam as they kept breaking off.

I think so. If it's not from 3M, 3M must have an equivalent product.

Hey M&M, you should consider doing more custom ideas like these. Judging by your Timbit count, it seems to pay off when you show how you can materialize something simple and great    And I'm glad that you recycled the word "lazy" from my original post and you appropriately adopted as your own too ! ;D
