Possible Canada Post Strike
« on: June 03, 2011, 08:44:55 AM »

Has anyone else heard about this? I read that it will be a rotating strike which means it could happen in Toronto one week and then be in BC the next week and so on.

So I though i would let everyone know about this just in case.

here is the article from CP24 http://http://www.cp24.com/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20110603/110603_postal_strike/20110603/?hub=CP24Home

It has already started as of 12:01 this morning. Winnipeg has no service.

They plan to do a "phased strike" affecting one city at a time. But it's not rolling - meaning that when Toronto goes (for example) winnipeg doesn't go back to work - winnipeg AND toronto will be on strike - and so forth and so on.

Strongly advise that people don't send or have people send to them any parcels until this is settled.

or if you are purchasing something online ask for a quote for UPS or Fedex.

If you are attending the CJC this year and you purchase something from a sponsor ask them if you could pick it up at the CJC. I know i allow that since it gives me the chance to talk with the person face to face.

Already started planning for this awhile back. My sister has worked there for over 10 years and said about a month ago that it was 99% a go for a strike.

Just safer to not use Canada Post for anything right now - just in case.

I'll be using this now:  http://www.ishipandsave.com/index.php/home
I signed up awhile back - one time fee. I also had a code to use to get more of a discount.

Could you please point to a source where that statement is made because my reading of the news says its supposed to be a rolling strike, not a phased one.
Honestly though, who do they think they are kidding with the "phased strike" idea? Slowly shutting off the mail is just going to piss the public off even more, and I think moreso than an abrupt nation-wide walkout would.
Yeah there's still some service, but various locations process mail through them to other destinations in Canada ( as I understand it) and if the mail tries to funnel through there it'll get caught up in the stoppages anyway, so whatever service there is in the still active areas slows down regardless.

I have some parcels inbound ( one I've been very much wanting) and I have some letters that could be affected by this, so I'm antsy about this strike, and the length it could have. And there's stuff I want to order from places like Bounty Hunter Toys and I can't place an order because I don't want it tied up in the strike mess.

Heard it from a postal employee. This also seems to confirm it (and says Hamilton, Ontario is the next city to join)

http://winnipeg.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local ... nnipegHome

Quote
Postal workers in Hamilton, Ontario will be following their Winnipeg co-workers onto the picket line, as their union tries to increase pressure on continuing negotiations with Canada Post.

Rotating strike doesn't make much sense, as it won't add to the pressure. ADDING another city will.

By all means, order it. I have two orders I'm currently holding for people and they're willing to wait for the strike to be over to get their items.
As one customer said to me today in an email "I know about the strike up there in Canada. I want those items so I don't mind waiting until that mess is over."

The House of Commons is debating the  back-to-work bill today ( even though the Tories have a majority its part of the legislative process) so the bill MIGHT be passed tomorrow sometime, if so then the mail should start running again early next week.

Which would be dandy for me, because I have several things inbound that cannot be delivered because of the strike.
