What happened to Niagara Falls?  Not that it matters to me one way or another.

I don't think it was confirmed that it would be in Niagara Falls 100%?...
It's on the radar for next year. Hamilton is only 30 minutes from The Falls. Regardless where the CanJoeCon was going to be this year, it's always worth the drive!

Is this hall going to be big enough for all the dealers and is there lodging close by?

The hall is much bigger than last year's, and the convention center is connected via a walkway to the Sheraton Hotel.

This is great news! I've been to the convention center before in the past. It should be a good spot. :)

Within the next week, I'll have a complete "CanJoeCon Info Package" ready for everyone to check out. It will contain all the hotels nearby, recommended restaurants, and some other items of interest for the area. I want people to come and not have to worry about where they're going to stay, or where they're going to eat. I want the Canadian GI Joe Convention to be a unique experience for everyone. As for the dealer space, there is PLENTY to go around. About 3 times the amount of last year.... which is good... because I had to turn away vendors from the 2008 Event.

Has anyone here brought their little ones with them to the convention?  I'm wondering how young is too young.  Any opinions?

I brought two 11 year old boys last year and they were fine.

There were kids as young as 4 and 5 at it in previous years. It's a "family friendly" place. So you're good to bring kids of all ages - From 1 year old, to 100!

I really hope I can make it, this year.  Hamilton is a nice drive away and I can probably stay with family in TO or London...  It'll all come down to $, but at least I know when it will be, so I can try to save.

At that age, he's not putting stuff into his mouth anymore, so he should be able to enjoy the free table and the hospitality. Most of the vendors are pretty kid friendly too.

Hi, I was thinking about getting a table at the Joe con and was wondering about availablity for a table and cost. I am good friends with GSmiley here in Ottawa. My girlfriends family lives out that way so I was thinking about it and am looking for more info. I would be selling mostly vintage vehicles, I want to make sapce around here. I have lots of complete unbroken vintage vehciles to sell. Not sure if I would bring figures yet though I do have thousands. Would also have vehicle parts and file cards,

That guy Martin gives some good advice. ;-)

There are tables still available - not much (just under 20), but if you email me at contact@joecanuck.com to inform me that you're sending payment out for your table(s), then I can hold them for a week until your payment and contract arrive.

I am looking forward to the meet (convention) as this will be my first one. I justmoved to hamilton so I dont have any excuses now.  I am hoping it will be a decent turn out as I worry about the economy playing a factor.  I am hoping you are getting good publicity.

Have you donated any kids tickets to big brothers, the hospitals or other charities. As that is a enasy way to spread the word, increase ticket sales and introduce joes to kids who may not be so fortunate to know about some of the toys.

Heck, we have some Americans coming 8 or 9 hours away!

And Sid, a visit from Snake-Eyes or Storm Shadow is always welcome.

Sid, didn't you have a Storm Shadow costume somewhere? I'd say hold off on Firefly for now and go with either Snake Eyes or Storm Shadow this year, mainly because of the movie coming out. Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes are the characters the kiddies will want to see the most of.

Ever thought of trying to make a Destro costume?

Thanks for the comments folks and no I don't fly while wearing anything remotely looking like camo on me though Ive had interesting conversations with CBSA folks at Pearson coming home from DragonCon ;)

Yes I had a Storm Shadow Costume but I've gotten rid of the majority of components for it... however I could remake it utilizing the compound bow, and climbing rope from the 2nd figure into something resembling the one in the movie.

Here's my Storm Shadow skit from almost 6 years ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Dl11HCsg0M&feature=channel_page (http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Dl11HCsg0M&feature=channel_page)

I understand Firefly is a bit vague, but fun to do (might bring it to Atlanta this year) and well I did Snake-Eyes last year in Hamilton... if y'all think that would be the best to do again (it's pretty much ready to go) I can bring it.

Lemme know what works best - personally I like my take on Ol' Snakes than in the movie, maybe because I've looked at the character as commando first, not overly uberninjalike and all that.

Don't tempt me but their are cost and logistics to consider before doing so.

If I do it, I might just go as Snake-Eyes again ;)

No, I am way past Sudbury. I am in Northwestern, ON. I am about a 18-20 hour drive to Hamilton. My wife is from Niagara Falls and while I would have a place to stay it is just too far. I would be there in a heartbeat if I lived closer. Maybe one year I will book some time off and come. Unfortunately, I will miss the exclusive figs as well. :(

Due to the nature of these, and that a MAJOR portion is going to the McMaster Childrens Hospital, I don't think we'll be taking pre-orders this year.

Last year, I literally got hate mail from people pissed off that the pre-orders sold out in mere seconds. I don't really want to spend an hour or so sorting through that again.

Plus, no one ever reads or follows directions. (Well, most people don't).
Every year we do that, someone ALWAYS places an order for 3 or 4, and always pays with paypal or credit card. Then, the day of the event they argue that they paid when we already refunded them their money. It's a huge pain in the ass to do, it slows down the line at the event itself, and I don't like doing it.

If we get to the point of having sets in the thousands, then we'll do it again and have a set way of doing things - but until that, for something this small of a run - no.

Agreed, we have to support our brothers to the north.

I think its a major accomplishment that joecanuck is utilizing 25th anniversary construction, fantastic, really.

Yeah, I agree, sell it as a set, sure its a bit more expensive, but you only have one con a year, if I can swing it, anyone can, :)

We are on our way up from KY, woohoo!

All figures will come with "blank" stands for that side with no name on it.

Example: Back-stop will have a G.I. Joe stand, and Chacal Noir will have a Cobra stand.

hmmm...

you mean the Broken Silence?   the beast of a vehicle with the Rolling Thunder base and the Night Raven lauch platform?  the custom that was started as a joke at the meet in 2007 and then on display as a finished vehicle last year?

that was Slopypantz and Raptor's deal.

if not that, then I'm unaware of another project that used a RThunder as a starting point.

Admission will be separate from the Con set this year mainly due to the portions from the con set going to the McMaster Children's Hospital.

And admission should be about $10.00 to get in. The ONLY way it will be more is if the one-day insurance fee and the (unionized) security guards I need to pay for the day end up costing me too much.
If it is more, it will be either $2 or $5 more. CND - so that saves you Americans some money right there!

Re-reading this, I realized I didn't finish explaining this:

The insurance company won't draw up anything unless it's within 2 weeks of the date it's issued for. That's why I don't know the costs for that. They don't even have a rough price for me because there are certain things to be done with it pertaining to the Convention Centre.

The Convention Centre is unionized - which means I HAVE to pay their workers to do some items for us - and I can't get a solid price on them yet. I know Security will cost me $16.00 per hour, but don't know if I HAVE to have 1 or 3 guards yet.

There's other cost factors that I'm still working on with this as well. True, with 6 years of this under my belt, I do have a hold on how to do this easy enough - but with the continuing growth of the event, the guests that we're still trying to secure, and some "surprise" costs that weren't expected, a final admission price isn't set yet and things always change.

So while the plan has been to have admission be $10.00, the additional costs (approx $1200-5000) DOES play a factor into what admission will be.

Rule of thumb, if you think you're only going to need $200 for the day, bring $250.

Plan for a $15.00 admission, but I'm trying to ensure that it will stay at $10.00

Worst case scenario - you'll save $5.00 if it turns out it's $10.00. :-)

Or should I just stick with Snake-Eyes?

Also, I'd like to give a summary of the event, is there a place where I can scoop up a press release, for lack of a better term?  I'd like to help promote, I just want to make sure it's as brief and accurate as possible :)

Yes, BUT what about how much will it cost?  That's the obvious question people are going to ask.  I understand there is a level of discussion going on so could you give me the highball number so that the answer might be to post "price is about ##, but it may be reduced a bit..."  I just don't want people to get the wrong info and people POed that they didn't get the right info the first time.

Gotcha. We're actually working that out right now.

For kids under 10 - it's free. FREE.

Adults, it will be $10.00 for a basic admission pass.

And we're working out the perks, but a VIP pass will be $15.00.

More on that shortly. As I said, we're working it out right now. ;-)

You can use US dollars but if I were you I'd get it exchanged. The dollar is being traded at par so you'd save money if you exchange it.

Not sure if this has been answered yet, but where will the line up start? at the convention front doors?  Will there be poles or anything to denote where and what direction to line up?

The first person there can decide that.

I would suggest lining up to the LEFT of the admission doors. That's usually the way lines have gone with events at this place before.

But if security asks you to move - PLEASE make sure those that are in front of you - remain in front of you. No budding. No fights. Anyone caught doing either will not be permitted access to the Convention, and thus - will have no chance at the set of exclusives.

So have there been any more guests confirmed (comic writers, artists)? I believe you alluded to working on another guest or two, but haven't noticed any updates.

We were in talks with all of the following to appear:

Sgt. Slaughter
Rachel Nichols (Scarlett from Rise of Cobra)
Kene Holliday (Roadblock / 80-'s cartoon)
Ron Rudat
Larry Hama

I also contacted the agents for the voices of Flint, Duke, Lady Jaye, Shipwreck and Duke from Resolute. NONE of the agents returned my phone calls or emails.

From those, that did reply (from the above list) one has commitments he needs to keep, one wanted far too much $$$, one would come for free, but the cost for his wife and him, plus hotel, etc would cost more than Sarge would of. Another just "vanished", or rather, their agent "vanished",  and one persons Agent messed things up for everyone - including his client... and his client didn't seem happy when I spoke directly to him.

The problem with some of these people is the Agents. They decide what is good for their client, and most times, a convention isn't worth the agents time financially, even if the client would, and has done these things before.

I'm still looking into another guest, but with one week to go, if we can get him, it will be a last minute addition - so last minute that he may be a surprise at the Convention.

Hopefully something comes out of it quickly.

On the plus side, I do have a couple of those people "on the books" for next year - which I expect to be an even bigger event than we'll have one week from today!

You guys have no clue the hoops I've had to jump through the last 2 months.  ::)

Mike - we appreciate all the work you've done - no matter who shows up (can you set a Con Set aside if I'm late - kidding).

Besides, Mr. Hama was the number one guest that I would ever have wanted to see at any con.

Well, Rachel too, but for different reasons...

Mike, my hat is off to you for ALL the effort you put into this thing year after year, especially now that it's SO MUCH bigger.  Fantastic work putting together everything you've already told us about!

Thanks for the update Mike. I can totally understand the difficulty in trying to get people to appear. I'm hoping that maybe next year there could be more comic folks (artists and/or writers). I'm really not a cartoon person at all, so voice actors really don't excite me. And slughter holds absolutely zero interest for me.

But again, thanks for the info and the effort!

I'll also throw in that I was talking with Robert Atkin, the artist of IDW's flagship GI Joe title. He was 90% committed but kept telling me not to announce it because he has a feeling he's forgetting something. Ends up, he had booked a Free Comic Book Day appearance a few months before, which meant he couldn't make our con. Too bad.

I knew there was one more!
Robert was going to be our "main" guy originally, when that fell through - then I worked on the others - it was actually Stealth that was working on Rachel.

Ah, that's too bad about Robert Atkins. He posts on joereloaded and seems like a really good guy. He was one of my suggestions back when you guys were asking for who we wanted to see. Selfishly, I'm not too bummed since I can't come this year, so there's hope for next year! Not that he couldn't come 2 years in a row, but I'm guessing you'd want to get someone different from year to year. Anyways, here's hoping for next year!

Thanks again guys. :)

Is the main entrance marked on the Convention Center ground floor layout where we should line up?  At the bottom left of the diagram on the ground floor.  Is the area outside the main entrance large or will the line most likely follow the outside wall along the sidewalk?  Just trying to figure out where to show up in the early hours May 2nd.  Thanks.

As stated in other threads, and I think this one as well - You line up OUTSIDE the building at the main doors. That map will do nothing for anyone until we arrive and let you inside. At that point, we'll direct people where to go. ;-)

The Convention Centre is attached to Hamilton Place, where concerts take place.
I have suggested that people line up to the left of the Convention Centre doors.

Thanks for the quick reply.  The map was the only one I could find that showed the entrance.  I think I know where the admission doors/main entrance is now.

Here's a picture of the outside of the Convention Centre?  I believe the entrance is shown near the center of the picture and is facing west?

Nope.

That's a roof-area of the Convention Centre/HamiltonPlace/Hamilton Art Gallery.

There's no other way to describe it.

Upon reaching the Convention Centre, you will see an underpass - there is a roof over the front door and cars drive under it to drop people off. When you reach the location - you'll see the doors and you'll see where you're to wait outside.

It's a set of doors... what more can I say. lol.

And I guess, in French as well, :)

HELP ME - I CAN'T MAKE IT BUT WANT AN EXCLUSIVE SET!

If anyone out there is able to buy a second exclusive set for me, along with any of the freebies, movie handouts, signs, etc., I am willing to pay for your admission and troubles in advance if you can get me a set and mail it.  I had planned to go and make this my first show but at the last minute, can't!   :cobra:

Please email me directly if you can help!
