Title: What was the most stupid element in the original line?
Post by: 5h4rK on September 06, 2010, 01:48:14 AM
The title says it all! What was the most stupid element in the original line for you? A vehicule concept? A figure's codename? A storyline (Marvel-Sunbow)?
(ie, for me it was the trademark logo under the Cobra symbol on the '91 Cobra Commander!!!)  :shifty:

I think the stupidest element was all those crazy teams they had at the end of the line (Star Brigade, Ninja Force, Eco-Warriors, Battle Corps etc) that ended up killing off the line.  That, and the multiple repaints of the same figure, often just a year after the previous figure's release.  And the neon accessories.

1. Cobra-La

2. 'Ice Cream Soldier' - worst codename EVER.

3. not bringing Airtight back for Eco-Warriors. the team's 'hostile enviroment' guy doesn't get brought back to fight eco-terrorism. w. t. f.???

Not a fan of Cobra-La story line.

N-E-O-N!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also lack of realism.  Hasbro supposedly knows what kids like, but it seems like when a line goes to far away from the military theme it starts to tank.

Cobra-La
Neon colors
The crazy sub-teams.

Neon,  except on original sci-Fi and the move away from realistic military.

As a kid, I didn't like repaints or even new versions of old characters (except snake eyes and hawk).  The python patrol would have seemed like an obvious attempt to rip us off.  But now, I find myself liking that stuff more and more.  GI Joe for me has always centered around the comic and I never liked the crazy history rewrite of the movie.  But in some ways I love just about everything about the vintage line, even the wacky stuff.  With the exception of maybe hot pink!

But then again, I think I was about the only one around here that said he liked Timbit!

Now that I'm older I find the whole gijoe cartoon absurd, why would anyone follow cobra commander who though resourceful and imaginative lacks true leadership to hold an organization like that.
Also the movie, I mean here's the elite team of US military and you got Lt. Falcon taking a chick into top secret areas and showing her around. To many of the supposed best operatives probably wouldn't have lasted through boot camp with their attitudes. Cobra-La a big stretch and of course Big Lob...enough said.
I was getting out of buying joes just as the sub-teams were coming out so I can't speak about that.

LOL How did I miss those ones? Yes, those have to be the stupidest damn things that Hasbro came up with. I think they had limited plastic leftovers lying around, that's when they decided they would do these!

EDIT: Come to think of it, I used to own the "tricycle" and was very fond of it. It was the vehicle of choice for Tomax and Xamot (try to picture a circus number with two elephants, one sitting on the other one's shoulders).

oh, i forgot one:

Skidmark.

such an embarassing name, they had to change it in the UK to Treadmark, yet the GI Joe comic reprints were never relettered to match...

that's a European embarassment for me: the really lame overdubs of 'Action Force' and 'Full Force'...

That makes two of us! I find it's such a cool sculpt, I actually have both of those guys, and I'm now collecting the Battlecorps mint on card. It's easier than having to complete them when they're loose and they're for the most part pretty affordable too  ;D.

1) Cobra-La: well I didn't have a problem with Cobra-La it is an interesting idea (made even better by IDW now) but the fact that Cobra Commander was a scientist in the Cobra-La empire that was a bit of a stretch.  (When did he have time to become a used car salesman?)

2) Ice Cream Soldier - Stupid Name, I remade him as a custom and renamed him I.C.S.

3) Paintball guns in the Valor vs Venom movie.  I know it is a cartoon made for kids, but paintball guns?  How about gas pellets or darts or laser taser things????

These are just minor items. I just love everything G.I. Joe and accept pretty much anything that comes out in the toyline or storyline.

Ninjas. Sure, storm Shadow was cool and making Snake Eyes a ninja was interesting, but after that it was just lame.

C'mon, a Samurai? Really? In fully Samurai gear? Don't get me wrong, I loved Samurai's as a kid, but even I knew that was stretching the credibility.

Then we have Quick Kick. A guy running into battle shirtless, bear foot with some ninja stars, sword and numb chucks? I don't recall to many Kung Fu guys throwing around Ninja Stars. Fast times at Ridgemont High had it right. "No shirt, no shoes, no Dice".

Speaking of Dice, Slice and Dice was another lame idea. The only way fo the names to be "cool" is if both guys are standing beside each other, and even that's a stretch. Do they pee together as well? Storm shadow had his little red army of ninjas, that should have been enough.

Soon everyone was a ninja, including Scarlet. WHY?

To top it all off, they helped kill the line with those stupid action features.

Yes, I believe ninjas are the reason the toy line died. The original kids got older and went, wait, sword vs M16? I know who I'm backing in this fight.

That's a good point you made there Morg. When someone thinks GI Joe, the usual thing they're expected to respond is military theme. Unfortunetaly the Ninja Force subset was too noticeable not to project the wrong image of gi joe. I like the fact that every once and a while Hasbro would offer a new character that's a martial artist. That number would never exceed 1 or none per year. However with Ninja Force, the massive numbers of ninja characters tipped off that fragile balance.

BTW, I liked the Battleforce 2000 characters, but with the exception of the Vector Jet, their vehicles are a total waste of space, even If got them for free. They are probably the greatest vehicle design fail in my opinion. To me, even the Ninja vehicles seemed superior on other levels, however beeing a non Ninja Force fan you won't find me looking to get them either.

BTW, Ice Cream Soldier name is a military deceptive Code name chosen expressively so that his enemies would not think for a minute that he's actually more of a "Incinerating Expert". Of course, his enemies would laugh at first "HAHA Ice Cream..." only to hear a "Wooosh" engulf them before they could finish their phrase with a "AAAAAHHHHHHHHRGGGGG!!!!! I'm burning!!!! ***..."

So it's kind of effective for someone to think he's got a stupid name, and not realize the extreme danger they're in if they're within torching range of: The Ice Cream Soldier!

As much as I love ninja, the whole Ninja Force thing wasn't very good.
Storm Shadow was special when he came out in 1984 because he was the only ninja in the line.
Snake Eyes became a ninja so the Joes would have someone to oppose him so that was still cool and I like their whole story together.
But Firefly, Zartan, Scarlet and the whole bunch of crazy NF characters? Oi!
- Firefly doesn't have to be a Koga ninja.
- Zartan can be an assassin without being a ninja.
- Scarlet dates a ninja and she comes from a whole family of martial artists and it's enough. She doesn't need to
  be a Kunoichi.
- Speaking of Kunoichi, I never was a fan of Jinx.

i took the mick out of ICS's codename in my AF fan-fic.

Battle Action Force featured an SAS Force guy called 'Haggis'.

my fan-fic is a modern reboot of AF.

Haggis appears in a single scene where Eagle complains to The Commander that he doesn't like Haggis' name and thinks it's stupid. He further complains it could lead to more stupid food-related codenames like 'Pie'n'mash' or 'Ice Cream Soldier' or 'Yorkshire Pudding'. he further suggests that if Haggis is such a Scotphile, he use something like 'Claymore' or something...

Well if you look on the back of the PoC cards, it says under the mission City strike "the G.I.Joe team uses their ninja training as they infiltrate a cobra warehouse"

Looks like their all ninjas now.

Most of the figure molds from that era are pretty good.  As shown by GIJCC in the past, a fresh paint deco without the bright colours does wonders.  The accessories were crap by then.

The worst thing that could of happened was the release of the 1995 Unproduced Star Brigade Replicators.

As much as I love ninja, the whole Ninja Force thing wasn't very good.

28 year-old Jon doesn't think very much of Ninja Force, but 11 year-old Jon looooooved Ninja Force. The Storm Shadow that came in the set had a kick-ass paint job and it was really cool that he had a troupe of guys he could order around. In retrospect, they were all kind of stupid looking, but when you're a young'un, realism isn't at the top of the list.

Heck, whenever my guys were killed, I'd come up with a way to resurrect them. A straight-up resurrection in the comics would have fans screaming bloody murder.

The real death of the line was the Kenner acquisition, was it not?

I find that the name of these figures is also stupid: does anyone have a theory why these were called "Replicators"? What were they supposed to replicate in your opinion?

And the aliens clean up the filthy digestive tubes of the Joes and Cobras, now that's what I call the perfect symbiosis partnership  :) .

Well, even blood and plasma had to censured for the sake of a kid's show back then.

And I still think that this episode isnt stupid  >:(. This is the only episode where the accessory of an action figure (aka Wetsuit's backpack) steals the action sequence of the show!!!!!
