Daina.

I like this figure.
-
It is a nice figure. But does it really match up to the grandeur of Volga?
-
you mean a cacky Lady Jaye repaint with inappropriate accessories and a bad head sculpt? YES!
-
I really like her. Nice choice in parts and a good looking female head. Not overdone and a good choice of weapons, colours and body parts. For me she is a total win.
The only thing that looks a little off is the side arm but that is very minor.

Well the head sculpt looks new but the helmet looks like it's from a Star Wars A wing Pilot:

In Mother Russia everything is BIG!
-
i'm just gutted they didn't use her vest/teeny shorts outfit from the yearbook story in Afghanistan...
-

That would have been cool! I knew they wouldn't though because they only use existing parts (except new heads) and so my expectations were muuuuuuch lower than that. As such, I'm pleasantly surprised by how nice it is!
-
Rumour has it the next figure will be shown on Monday. The big question is will it be another Oktober Guard or the villain side of the set. We still don't know who they are facing but I personally am hoping for the Iron Grenadiers.
After making that Metal Head custom a few months back I sorta feel in love with the character. Never liked him a kid but something happened when I made that dude and all of the sudden he didn't seem lame anymore. That and I've always been interested in Darklon and thought he should have been fleshed out more. I don't see Hasbro ever making them (or Voltar) so let the GIJCC have a go with them. ;)
-
Just when I have all but given up on Joe. Between these and the dollar store figures, I am interested again.
-
Quite impressed with the head sculpt, the rest of the figure is sorta bland. That said, I'm still aiming to get a set since I never thought we'd get a whole group of modern era Oktober guards. IGs in the set would just be a big bonus for me.

Schrage is up:
He looks OK. I wish there was more paint details.

Da some camo on his uniform would have made a difference.
-
Looks pretty good to me. The lack of cammo isn't an issue for me. I'm really drawn to his water canteen for some reason.

That's not actually a canteen. Its a drum magazine ammo carrier.
-
which is weird since Stormavik was the one usually carrying the RPD which has a drum mag.
-
I guess I will get a set off ebay. The club has a long way to go to regain my trust back.
-
I loving these two so far. Hope the rest are as accurately done. Shrage actually uses the same head, torso, and lower legs as the custom I've had mostly done for awhile.

Same head? It's my understanding it's a new head, or am I wrong?
-
Well, I assumed it was the o-ring one, I got one from brokenarrow at last year's con.
-
That's it, I'm 100% sold...
Brekhov is awesome. Great use of that Destro body.
-
A very nice looking set so far.
-
First comic 3 pack down, next the comic pack with Horror Show, Stormavik and Stalker? I know, Stalker isn't part of the O.G. but if they have to follow the Hasbro rule form a few years back and have at least 1 Joe in the box set, my money is now on Stalker.
-
I just wish he didn't come with a purse.
The Russian guy from my 3 3/4 Indiana Jones crystal skull series has just found a new home!
-
interesting weapons. that looks awfully like a French FAMAS F1...
-
pretty good set so far.
-
I dig the box art. It reminds me of Fallout.
-
I agree, the box looks very good. Might have to spring for a box set this year. Every figure looks pretty nice so far although the arms on stormavik look a bit odd.
-
So is there any way to actually get a set without going to the con and resorting to the secondary market? I have never been remotely interested in a con set before but the oktober guard is too significant to ignore.
I can't believe hasbro gave the okay for these guys to be in a con exclusive set. Tells me hasbro basically has little to no faith in bringing any more modernized classic figures to regular retail.
-
ask someone who's going to buy you one. that or wait and see if they have any left. if you go the first option, try finding someone who'd rather get a bagged set and then you get the boxed, they get the bagged and everyone's happy.
just my opinion

I would hazard a guess that after the Indiana Jones flop Hasbro is a little gun shy about retail releases of more "generic" looking soldiers. While we all love the October Guard, I believe most of these would peg warm at retail because they just arent going to grab kids attention.
Also, you can join the club and order a set to be mailed to you without having to attend.
Personally I have started to do the "calculations" more and more when buying exclusives. What is the cost, plus travel, lodging, food, etc. I used to go and get enough to sell the extras to cover costs, but now I find too many times the location is a repeat of a previous year I went and I would rather put the money to other trips like Thailand and Cambodia last month.
-
So how much is the Oktober Guard Set if you attend the convention?
Im not attending but Im looking to see what options there are for getting one. Its such a great set so far.
Im looking into joining the GI Joe club, but the Canadian price is $66 for membership. But if you join up with them, are you guaranteed that the set will be available online?
The other option is to wait until they hit ebay, and by then its going to be in the upper hundreds.
-
couple hundred bucks for a boxed set usually. you can only buy the cheaper bagged set when you buy a boxed one. (*coughripoff*cough*)
no, you're not. i think they usually have at least a few sets left, but it's not guarenteed.
-
Is anybody here making the trip down to New Orleans for the convention?
-
Oh no. I can deal with most of this figure except for those awful legs. I won't want to army build this one at all:

Guess they found a spot for the unreleased IG set.
Not that impressed, but I do like the legs. So we have 4 OG, 5 of this IG, that leaves 6 more. What? 5 more IG of a different variety and an IG "general" (think Voltar, Darklon). Then some more OG in the con attending packs?
-

Good lord. Those legs do suck. I am not fan of this figure.
-
Yuk...
I hope the other IGs are better...
-
Yuk...
I hope the other IGs are better...
Won't they all be the same?
I agree, pretty yucky. :P If I manage to track down a set, I'd likely sell of the IGs. I will probably only want the oktober guard out of it because unfortunately I really like the oktober guard figures so far. But it sounds like unless I know someone going to the con, I'm probably going to be SOL on this set.
-
the collector's club page for the set shows 6 Oktober Guard figures and 4 of the adversaries (they hadn't revealed the IG last time i looked), so i imagine it's the 5 classic Guard members, possibly with Dragonsky, but it could be Big Bear, Gorky or hell, even Wong. then who the other 3 are? 3 IGs and a 'leader'? 2 IG generics and 2 singular characters? could be a modern sculpt take on General Mayhem or whatever his name was from the set they did a few years back in o-ring...
-
Cancelled IG set:
Hopefully this is NOT the direction they are going. I don't need another Destro. :'(
-
Those legs are such a strange choice. I think basing the 25th IG on armoured Cobra Commander was a clever direction to take them, but it is also the most consistent complaint I've heard about that figure. To create a figure that is supposed to be a lighter armoured IG and yet to stick with armoured those legs is not only strange, it has no practical justification. And then colouring the armour not only brown but with a leather wash, it just doesn't work. And that doesn't even consider how the brown and the grey clash.
-
not a big fan of that IG, and theres going to be 5 of him in the set? ugg. I guess it would have been too much to ask for IGs we havent had yet, an Annihilator (they have the helibackpack from 25th), or even a Nullifier or ferret. For IG leadership it better not be destro...plenty of others to chose from, general Mahem, Darklok, hell even Metal Head.
-
They look like female IGs with those legs.
-
next IG trooper is up
http://www.gijoecon.com/no2012/con12ighvywpns.cfm
its a little better, the paint aps are very nice, but Im not sold on the Grey color. Though I understand these guys are suppose to be dressed for winter.
-
The Heavy Weapons IG is better than the mini-skirt leather cyborg base IG from the set in every way. Very cool.
-
I guess Brown Boots are all the Rage for the IGs. If that is the Arctic versions for the IGs, for what country the Bahamas?
-
Those IGs are a real disappointment, absolutely hate the color schemes. Definitely tempers my enthusiasm for the set somewhat but hopefully the remaining figures are better.
-
And the third one is up:
Meh. The 2nd was the best IMO.
At least the body is suppose to be new.
This guys weapon is awful and the colours all look too bright.
-
hmm if they are going to make their coats non black they really need to make the helmet nonblack...
-
hmm if they are going to make their coats non black they really need to make the helmet nonblack...
At first I thought the opposite, that the yellow mask was the mistake and the whole helmet should have been black. But you're right, neck down nothing else is black. I think the red's a nice shade that looks so bright because of the light colours around it.
-
ya, if they had changed the grey hilights to black i think it would have worked out much better.

looks like a duck head.
-
did you hit the right vowel on your keyboard?
-
Why didn't they name them differently from each other? We got three different Iron Grenadiers and they all have the same name. The first guy should be something like "Arctic Iron Grenadier", 2nd should be "Heavy Gunner Iron Grenadier" and the third should be "Destro's Elite Iron Grenadier" or something (anything) that separates them. I wonder what the files cards look like on these guys.
-
Correct me if I am wrong. I think the desert set was the same way, Id have to check when I get home. The Chem-warrior and Flamethrower were both called "Troopers" and then in the file card their speciality would be Flamethrower infantry, biohazard specialist or something like that, so Id imagine these IGs would be similar.
-
the threads on Serpentor's Lair say they're called "Iron Grenadier", "Elite Iron Grenadier" and "Iron Grenadier Heavy Weapons Specialist", which i think they got from the CC site. i'd imagine the stands all say 'iron grenadier' because it's cheaper to make (say) 2000 stands with that on than to flatulate about making 500 with one thing on, 500 with another thing on and 1000 with something else.
-
This is better:
Just a reminder, here's the original:
-
Who knew Accelerator Suit parts could be used so well?
I like this figure, I think the vintage homage was the better way to go than an update. I think the colours of the IGs in the set were an even bigger mistake, though. A general in purple and gold leading men in grey and red?
-
not bad....lose the shoulder armour and I'd be okay with it. Given the chance I'd change Voltar's colour to something else and I think I'd like it more. I do like the head sculpt though and would like to see an image with him wearing his helmet.
-
at least it's not a freaking Destro figure, right?
-
Voltar looks surprisingly good considering the body used. The helmet's very nice, but I think he would look more consistent with the IGs if he had boots.
-
The Club just put up the brochure. Apparently, Dragonski is out, Horrow Show is in and there is a new character on the OG team.
-
No word on the 2 or 3 packs, if any. Though, I'm not 100% sure if those get announced before the convention. I think they don't.
The 2009 Int'l packs were sweet, but not so much last year.
-
Voltar looks good, not a fan of the weapon though, can never get those bullpup rifles to be held right...
-
the attendee exclusive stuff is never announed until the Con is on. or at least, that's my experience of following the con announcements in '09, '10 and '11. cuz i was over at BFTB for the '09 one when someone started creaming his pants that it was going to be Red Shadows and then of course it turned out it was Crimson Strike Team and then of course you had Blades and the Hawk in the one attendee set. then i was following it more closely the last two years with the Red Shadow set and the Python Patrol stuff.
-
I understand Hasbro requires the Club to have at least 1 Joe fig in the convention sets. Since the full set is OG vs. IG, that stands to reason that a 2 or 3 pack will be of Joes...maybe both. That would be good, there are some key figs that need to be made.
-
that's usually one in the box set. i'd assume the Iron Grenadier and Voltar filled that niche.
-
anybody would like to share a box and bagged set ? I don't care for the box so we could share shipping and overall costs
let me know

Me, me, me. I want to get a set, bag or box (doesn't matter to me).
Thanks
Peter
-
I can't remember, can you order more than one boxed set as a member?
-

Yes
-

Actually, I believe the figure has to be a Joe, so if that is true (and I'm not 100%) than technically OG or IG would not count.
If that is the case, I wonder who would make sense. You have to figure someone that is an easy repaint, but is sought by Collectors.
Maybe, Maurauder versions of Footloose (very easy) and Mutt and Junkyard.......total guess.....I know nothing.
-
If it was a Joe Id guess it would be one of the arctic ones, they would have plenty of arctic bodies to chose from, just needs a new head sculpt. If it were Iceberg or Frostbite Id be really stoked.
-
I thought that too, but we will see. Funny enough, I just commissioned a set of Joe Artic troopers - Frostbite, Blizzard, Iceberg, Windchill and Cold Front......think that is all of them.....so I sort of don't want to see them in the set. I tend to think it would not be the first 3. Those are iconic characters and I think collectors would be pissed if they were relegated to a 2 or 3 pack. I could see it for more obscure characters like the last too.
-
I also just picked up a Dragonski custom b/c he was not in the main pack. I hope he is not in the 2/3 packer. I tend to doubt it though...those seem to be reserved for int'l figures based on the last couple. That's a cool angle to get the int'l figs out.
-
yeah, but the last 3 sets were all internationally themed anyway. if you look back at the sets from '08 or '07, the stuff from outside the box set was Joes or Cobras, like Slaughter and the Renegades or the SWAT guys.
-
Yup, and we may be reaching diminishing returns with the Int'l figs....we have most of the Argen 7, a lot of the UK guys, Sparta. We have Quarrel and TNT coming in the FSS. Not sure what would be next.
-
a lot of the UK guys? not by a long shot, mate. they did the Black Major, Red Shadows and Natalie Poole from Action Man in o-ring, sure, and redid Jammer and Gaucho and a new Dolphin, and a modern Blades, but there's plenty of others they can do from AF like Moondancer, Hunter, Barracuda, Eagle, Skip, Sky Raider, Kiwi, the Muton, Kraken and Skeletron, Red Jackel, Red Wolf, Red Laser, Hot Jets, Quickfire, Stakeout, Beaver and so on.
that's without them doing modern sculpt versions of the Tiger Force exclusives or the euro-exclusive Mutt, Lowlight and Spirit.
-
Interesting, didn't realize it was that extensive. Seemed like a shorter list on Yo Joe. I always get confused between the different forces, Z-Force, Q-Force, etc.
I like them generally, but some I could do without. For instance, Hunter. I have debated using some of the dollar Joes to fill in the gaps (Duke = Moondancer, I believe), but there are other gaps in my collection I want to fill in first.
-
the o-ring Moondancer was Short Fuse, iirc. Dolphin's o-ring version was Zap. Both had previously been released as Pallitoy original 5-point articulation figures.
there were 9 Hasbro figures repainted for Action Force's second series: Snake Eyes V1 as SAS Force Stalker, Cobra Officer V1 as Hunter, Tripwire V1 as Blades, Scarlett V1 as Quarrel, GI Joe Stalker V1 as Jammer, Gung-Ho V1 as Gaucho, Steeler V1 as Z Force Steeler, Cobra Commander V1 as Red Laser, Destro V1 as Red Jackal.
The third series of Action Force was mostly Joe characters just as international chracters, only two were repainted, Zap and Short Fuse as the aforementioned Moondancer and Dolphin. Two others were not repainted, but given different names: Rock'n'Roll V1 became 'Ton-Up', the Swedish driver of the AF Wolverine and Wild Weasel V1 became a redo of Red Wolf, the Roboskull pilot, now working for Cobra.
the other 30-odd series two Action Force figures were only released in the 5-point articulated figures, which are: Eagle, Beaver, Sparrowhawk, SAS Force Attack Trooper, Stakeout, Quickfire, Barracuda and Chopper from SAS Force; Skip, Tracker, Breaker, Wheels, Z Force Infantryman, The Doc and Scout from Z Force; Sky Raider, Hot Jets, Hawkwind, Blast Off and Kiwi from Space Force; Phones, Shark and Surfer from Q Force and Baron Ironblood, Red Shadow, Red Vulture, Black Major, Skeletron, Kraken and Muton from The Enemy and finally the mail-away Action Force Commander.
-
Iron Bear didn't turn out to be what I thought and is a bit disappointing.
-
See, I must have been thinking about the 2nd series. We have Blades, Quarrel (via the FSS), Gaucho (o-Ring), and Jammer (o-Ring). Some are hard to portray as new characters (e.g. Snake Eyes = Stalker) though.
Who was in the first series if Hasbro repaints were in the second series?
Did not know about the 30-odd figs that you mentioned.
-
This guy does not look like an Iron Bear.....more like Drago in a hoodie. It is okay, but not what I expected.
Still getting the set though.
-
Is that a microphone on his hand? Don't get that. Maybe it will be covered in the filecard.
-
it's a baton, like a swagger stick.
emags, the first series of Action Force was a series of 3 3/4in scale Action Man figures essentially. generic soldiers, sailors and airmen based on different 12in AM figure outfits. these were again 5-point artic figures and many were redeco'd to create the series 2 figures, some times with parts swapped about or with new headsculpts. see www.bloodforthebaron.com for the complete history of AF.
-
Thanks, Sundance, I'll check that out. That, and I am repeating myself, is the best part of this hobby....you always find out something new and interesting about the Joe-verse.
Sundance, here's a question, I'm sure you will know.....Is Agent Natalie Poole really part of the mythos. Thought she was an Action - Man character that was carted over for the 2010 convention......for some reason she does not feel like the moral equivalent of say Blades, Jammer or Gaucho.
Thanks!
-
yes, she was part of the 1990s 'extreme' Action Man mythos. AM himself was part of a Night Force set from 2002 (i think). her only connection to Action Force outside the con-set is that Hasbro or licensees some times used the name 'Action Force' for AM and his cadre of mates in the 'toon or the comics. Characters who include a Native American named 'Red Wolf', which annoyed me no end when i saw him in a toy-store. i was like, "wait, what? Red Wolf's a bad guy!"
-
Iron Bear didn't turn out to be what I thought and is a bit disappointing.
Yeah, and I think it's Brian Savage's face on that figure. That really upset me if that's the case. The price has gone way up, they complain about the cost to make all these new molds and then remove one of the original team to put one of their own in the set and pass the cost on to us. :(
-
I actually like the Iron Bear figure.
I wonder what a head swap for Brekhov and Iron Bear would look like.
-
If that's Savage's face, that is an epic fail. I'm okay with a new character, though don't think we necessarily need one, but does it have to be a love letter to an employee of the club. If that's true, that's weak.
-

-
Horrow Show came out earlier tonight. I like the head sculpt, but the body does not scream Horrow Show. I don't want to sound negative, but I have seriously better customs of him.
-
Do we know who Iron Bear's face is based on yet? I think the club said it is not based on an employee.

It's OK.
-
I like the headsculpt, not too sold on the green though. Needs more brown IMO. I dont know why but they seem to have a lot of figures that have odd color distribution on their figures. Like top half has one color theme and the bottom has another, it makes it so imbalanced.
-
I would have liked to have seen him fatter with the custom green quilt jacket.
It's okay, not bad, but not 100% either.
That all being said, I find sometimes figures that seem just OK in hand, actually look better in a dio setting. In other words, you may not love Horror Show on a standalone basis, but you lose that when you put him on a shelf with 20 other figs.....all sort of blends in.
-

True. I'd love to see a group shot.
-
Horror Show...before he got fat.
The figure is ok.
-
I think the one thing the Clu did well was the head sculpts. Think there were 7 new ones and they were all excellent. Last year, we had 1 or 2, right? Claymore and DeAco (or was he a repaint). So, that's the upside, I suppose.
-
Claymore was a new sculpt, Deaco was a repaint of Snake Eyes. The only other semi new head was Spartas I believe, as it was a retooled head from pre-25th O-ring cover girl.
-
Yup, you are right. I looked it up. Sparta was a DTC Cover Girl head from 2006. Funny, did not realize anything was used from pre 2007. Truth be told, it is a pretty good head. I'm looking forward to getting a Cover Girl from the FSS. Guessing that will be the same head sculpt too.
-
Saw something on another site that the pre - orders should go live tomorrow. Granted, don't hold your breathe, but we will see. I'm ordering the non attendee edition, which should go live a few days after that.
-
Those guys can't catch a break.
-
Been a tough year for the Club. The FSS issue was the worst. Collectors were talking about it when the reveals were going on in the Fall and it was generating a lot of buzz. Then the credit card issue happened and it lost all momentum. I'm sure people will still sign up, but I imagine less so.
They've also been having issues with getting the magazine out......when it rains it pours.
-
The sign up is still not up and apparently will not be until tomorrow, at the earliest per the Club. They really are not putting their best foot forward with this.
The convention is fastly approaching and people can not buy packages yet. I'm guessing a number of people have not booked their travel yet b/c they don't know what they are getting. That seems reasonable. At some point, airfare and hotels start getting more expensive and people will forego the trip and that's too bad, really.
