Title: Flea market/garage sale Joe finds...
Post by: Propergrounds on April 25, 2011, 04:06:39 PM
LJ's post earlier inspired me for this one.
What was your greatest joe find at a flea market or garage sale?

A few years back I found a Starduster version C with helmet in mint shape for $4 at a flea market.
A few tables down I got a complete red and black MMS (from the sears SMS set) for $5.

I got a HISS Mark II for $3 at a thrift store, if that counts.  Other than that, it would be the first HQ playset... at a convention from LJ! ;D

3 years ago or so, I bought this great lot of loose Joe stuff for 60$ from a guy who posted on the local classified ads. There was 20 complete figures, 10 vehicles, a couple of extra original clear vizors, dusty bipods, Storm Shadow v.1 accessories and some good amount of paperwork.

Also less than 5 years ago, I was at the St-Leonard's annual Flea Market and found 20 loose joes for 10$. They were all from 83-86, and there was a Viper, Cobra Officer, BAT, Snow Serpent and Eel.

Before that, I had found a Starduster mint loose complete for 7$ at a convention at the turn of year 2000 when I was back into the Joe collecting hobby  ;D .

Its always nice to score good deals.
right before xmas I bought a huge collection off a guy for $300.
about 8 large bins of stuff.
about 95% of it was complete.
I turned that into $3500 selling on evilbay.
which then turned into $3500 spending on evilbay... ;D

Once got a Night Raven for $0.50 at a garage sale. When I got home, I opened the drone and it had a nice 1983 Cobra soldier in it!

I never have any luck with garage sales, I do not get up early enough to find the deals!

I don't think it's always a matter of getting up early. Most of the time It's a matter of being there at the right time and place. Per instance a Garage sale could have already started, and you happen to be passing by when the seller puts the Joes on the table for the first time in the day, while everybody else who passed by earlier didn't get to chance at them. It happened to me with the lot of 20 Joes that I found. Never again did this happen to me at the St-Leonard flea market, but then again I wasn't expecting it so that was perhaps the beauty of it.

True to my typical luck, I was at a flea market with my parents in the early 90s.  Someone there had an APC for sale, which I had wanted for a long time (and coincidentally did not get until just a couple of years ago).  I don't remember the price, but I remember it was not high at all and the vehicle was complete.  Went to get my dad, told him about it, and he said "Well, let's go get it."  On our way there, were passed by a very happy kid with the APC in his hands and his dad going in the other direction.  I was annoyed...

Sounds to me like your dad was at the wrong place while it was the right time to buy it. You just made me remember stories like that where I was also the loser.... :'(

Wasn't Robert that "forced you" to buy it? Even that, you put the fig back on the table and Robert put it back in your hands saying you had to get it NOW! Then you gave up.

How many timbits should I get for refreshing your old memories?   ;D

Martin, PM sent.

Answer to your question:  Let Joe Canuck Democracy take care of the  :timbits:

You got the rest of the story figured out because you probably heard it from the right people but the fact remains that YOU weren't at the Holiday Inn Crown Plaza on that day. Robert and I were. I didn't even know you then.

And for the record I did find Starduster. What is before I knew his name was Starduster or because my friend told me about it? here's a hint: On that specific day, my friend told me to go check out this dealer that had Joe figures. I went to the dealer and I found this turquoise figure in a batch of 7$ figures that looked like a green shirt and had a black star and vizor on the helmet. I looked at and I didn't know who it was, I was going to put it back. And then Robert like a vigilante and best friend, came to the rescue. So who found Starduster in the end?

I've honestly never had any luck with garage sales or flea markets when it comes to Joes.  One time back in the day I did score it big with a garage sale FULL of Transformers that were all in almost perfect shape.  That was HUGE because I got to fill some big holes in my TF collection for good prices...back when there was no such thing as the Internet to find out-of-production stuff!

I use to work at a comic shop called "Titans of Tomorrow" back in the 90's. Before Hasbro brought back Star Wars I could see a growing interest in Star Wars, so we started to buy up old Star Wars collections and selling them off. One day a guy brought in a bunch of Star Wars toys that were middle of the road for value. I think we bought the stuff but didn't really need any of it at the time. The one thing he had made me laugh, so I bought it off him for 25 cents. It was a wind up R2D2.

It was this one:

http://galacticawesome.blogspot.com/201 ... -1978.html (http://galacticawesome.blogspot.com/2011/02/wind-up-r2-d2-takara-1978.html)

I sold it years later on ebay for a boat load of money. I forget how much, but it was at least $150.00.

That's a very nice catch. I've only seen one in person in my whole life so far.

Go dig it up. It's easily worth $150.00. Go to ebay and search "wind up R2D2" and you'll see a few for sale right now.

The only Joe-related garage sale find I had was a stack of the early Marvel comics.  I bought it in the early 90s when the comic wasn't as popular anymore.  That one sale pretty much completed my collection, too.

I bought my USS Flagg out in the country from an older lady for $50.
I responded to an add on kijiji and had to drive about 2 hours to pick it up but it was worth it.
It was in great shape, all stickers present and only missing a few parts.
I completed it for about $300 extra.

It was 2 hours both ways...
but for that 1 hour ride home I had a huge sh#t eating grin on my face!
I actually pulled off the road to go through the boxes and see what was in there.
I found a few figures, a conquest X30, ram, vamp, a bunch of weapons, backpacks etc and a dead mouse!
good score...too bad its the only part of my collection I dont have room for.
its boxed up in my closet awaiting a spot for display.
the ongoing joke in my house is its going on my wifes side of the bed.
She also says if I ever cheat on her shes having a GI Joe bonfire.  :o :shifty:

That's the real deal.  I've got one myself, which was a mail-away only item from Hasbro.

Very, very nice score for $65, btw

Sold it to my friend for a dollar... LOL

Wasn't interested in it at the time, and he is a huge prime fan, buys them from every series. Wish I had it now, as I don't have one for my self. Rookie Mistake.

5 years ago i was driving home, I was rolling then i saw a couch in front of one of my neighbour. Between the cushions there was a black box with a big joe logo on the side. i did a u-turn and found a night raven box with the night raven inside ;-) 95% complete. I knocked on the door and asked the lady if she might have the missing part or other stuff. We went down in her basement and found a couple of missiles.

Before that, i went to the annual "salon des collectionneurs" in Drummondville (it's in St-Hyacinthe now) I was looking at some Joe figs when an old man told me that he had all this in his basement. I was skeptical at first he was like 70, but one of my friend told me he knew this guy and he saw his collection. I went to Magog where he lived and found around 340 figs from 1982 (straight arms) through 1994. He also had a big bag of accessories. I bought the lot for 150$

340 figs, 80% to 90% complete for 150$

Just to add to the thread.
This weekend, for $10, I got the most random of 80's toy parts:
- MASK figure and two helmets
- Transformer G1 Repugnus, G1 Ransack, G1 Stonecruncher, Optimus gun, Sludge gun
- He-Man Castle Greyskull ladder
- GI Joe WHALE cannon and cannon tip
- 2 Transformers from 2000/01
- 6 newer minicons
- a bag of stuff I don't recognize (a lot of free table stuff for the JoeCon!)
A little of everything. Wish the WHALE, Sludge or Prime was still there, but they must've disappeared years ago....
