Hasbro's Publicity for the 25th anniversary vehicles

See this first:

I know marketing increase sales, but why doing it when products are always out of stock?

By the way, 3 funny things about this commercial:
  • How Clutch is holding the steering wheel  8)
  • Nobody drives the HISS  ???
  • Steeler's helmet doesn't fit quite well  :-[

Clutch looks like he's starting a wide left turn.  Breaker's helmet is on kinda goofy, too.

Also, what a LAME commercial, when played right after the 80's on.  I'd much rather watch kids goof around with the toys, then random wiggly shots.

It looks like a very low-budget production for sure and I can't believe the quality is Hasbro endorsed, it looks like a fan-made promo.

But that's not my biggest gripe.  It's the driver-less HISSes.

From catalogues dating back to the early 80s, to toy commercials, to today's promo pics, I can't for the life of me understand why toy companies don't give their products to advertising agencies that actually know about the toys!

What i mean is, how many times have we seen figures with incorrect accessories, or assembled incorrectly, or driver-less HISS tanks????  It boggles the mind.  One can only assume the photographer just wants to set it up quickly, take the shot, and collect their pay cheque.

Yes I feel passionate about this because it's a toy line I love, but honestly how do you sell a toy when you're not displaying it correctly!?!  These days action figures have to compete with short attention spans and video games and maybe I'm underestimating children of today, but I'm sure they'd notice that nobody is driving the HISS.

Does it matter in the grand scheme of things?  I don't know, but I can't understand why companies aren't taking more pride in their products and advertise them the way they were intended to be used.

Often times, these shoots are given to the lowest bidders and late in the game, so your assumption that its a rush job is often the case.

Its simply the case that finding ad folks and photogs that are also knowledgable of GIJOE or even toy collectors is a very, very rare thing.

HAha, Imagine a GI Joe Photo Shoot.

"Ok, now let's put this cute little green thingy over here." "I wanna see emotion, Cobra Commander, you're angry, you're angry, Grrrr!  Oooh, yes, now you're playfulll!"

It's a sad, sad day for toys.

I don't have my catalogues with me at work but I distictly remember there's one shot of the Tactical Battle Platform and Shipwreck has a Snow Serpents backpack on!!!!  There's all kinds of wrong with that!

Ok, even if a person wasn't into G.I. Joe or knew very little about toys - doesn't a sailor wearing a big wintery backpack look kinda strange to the average person?

The other thing that gets me with the modern promo (almost typed porno!) pics that we see from Hasbro these days is the standing straight on their figure-stand pose.  I mean a selling feature for these toys has to be the articulation, so why can't we see them in articulated poses?  Now I know a standing-straight-pose shows off a lot of the detail of the toy but wouldn't it sell more if we see a pose where Roadblock is clocking CC?

There's so much potential!

It's not all gloom and doom though, I really do like their mini-dios that are included in the new toy catalgoues - the one where CC & Destro have the completed MASS Device and Hawk is tapping Bludd's shoulder.  That's creative.
