Title: HBC Sold to American Company - Could this be good for Canadian Joe Buyers?
Post by: Canuklehead on July 16, 2008, 07:10:54 PM
So here's the article:

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/reuters/0807 ... onsbay_col (http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/reuters/080716/canada/canada_hudsonsbay_col)

The rundown:
HBC (The Bay & Zellers) was sold to an American company known for High-end retail.  While the American company might not be the type to purchase and sell GI Joes, my thoughts are that they'd be well connected to possible get a variety of stock into Zellers.  I'm hoping that this means a better Zellers (maybe some conveyor belts at the check outs?  What's up with that, anyway?) with some rare items and possibly even exclusives that can make it into the Canadian marketplace.

So should I be cashing in my 700, 000 plus Zellers points? My plan was to someday hit 1, 000, 000.

HBC was sold to an American in 2006 - his name was Jerry Zucker CEO of InterTech Group, NRDC was a minority partner at the time of that sale, and today moved to become the majority owner.  Jerry Zucker died in April of this year

So as for Joes, I doubt it, as nothing really happened in 2006

It's possible that now being owned by a department store brand will lend a certain status to Zellers and The Bay - one that they might not have gotten when they were owned by Zucker.  It's even possible that this new acquisition will create a certain excitement within the manufacturers and suppliers...  They're supposed to be trying out "Supercentre" style Zellers stores - so it's not unthinkable that the larger retail area will have more manufacturers jumping on board to supply the hell out of the new stores.  Possibly meaning more stock, wider selections and even exclusives.

One can only hope, anyway.

(And I'm sure HBC Points will still be good...  otherwise, I'm cashing them out and stocking up on Gift Certificates before it's too late!)

I dunno, it might spell doom for Zellers since they were bought by a company that's into more high end urban then rual stores.

Well, it could be the high-end store's chance to reach a new clientelle...  cover all bases.  They already announced Mega-Zellers stores, so they're at least going to give it a shot.

But yeah, if those don't work out, I don't see Zellers going too much longer - the one by my place is always so empty compared to Walmart.

Or the high end company could sell off zellers to target. That was the rumour a couple years ago, I believe, when Zucker moved in. Then we could get all those lovely target exclusives.

I won't hold my breath though.

Now THAT would be awesome.  This company might be in a better position to do it, too!

One can only hope, though...  chances are, anything that happens won't happen for a while.  Long into the next batch of Joe lines.
