Title: A new member for Joe Canuck
Post by: morgardee on August 08, 2006, 09:49:42 PM
As of Sunday, August 6th at 10:45 pm I'm proud to say I'm a father to my first child, Dalton Robert Mumby. Man, it's a wierd experience. I'm really excited, but I've got to admit I have those moments of fear. It's strange. I'm totally proud of this little person I helped make, but then I get these late night moments where I realize that it's no longer just Sheryl and me, but now this little guy. Then I start to think about him as a toddler and sitting down in the basement on a winter Sunday afternoon watching all The Transformers and G.I.Joe DVD's and then when it's totally cool.

So yeah, it's a lot to get use to, but it's cool. My boy is healthy and happy and I think that's all anything a new parent could ask for.

Congratulations.

The joy and trepidation of the first child.  Enjoy! Enjoy! Enjoy!  Kids are wonderful.

The advice I have always heard and now more fully appreciate is enjoy them when they are young and still excited by all of the things that dad is excited by.  Once they start school dad takes more of a backseat and friends take on a larger role, dependant on sharing of hobbies and activities.  I am shocked my 8 year old seems to have grown out of action figures, but most of his friends don't play with them.

Anyways I digress a bit.  Enjoy every smile, every giggle and every "dad can we play with the toys on the fancy shelf".

Sleep when you can. Whenever you can. Wherever you can. Sometimes, you may need to go out to the car to sleep.

Have a lot of small and easy to prepare snacks in the house.

If she's breastfeeding, bring her food and books, as it stops being magical, and starts being boring in about 2 weeks.

The first 4 months, the baby just coos, drools, eats, pukes and poops. It's enough, to endeer him to you for life. However, if you start to get bored though, don't feel bad. They get more and more interesting the older they get.

Don't buy any clothes for the first 18 months of your child's life. They will mysteriously appear out of thin air in large, musty smelling boxes.

All the best - you life will forever be changed for the better!
You will get to experience all the things you love in life all over again for the first time.
I loved watching Empire Strikes Back with my oldest child for the first time, she went to bed that night wondering if Darth Vader was Luke's father, I kept telling her that I really didn't know and we would have to wait until we got to watch ROTJ.

Congrats, Dave. A little advice: Read with him. I'm astonished at the difference between the kinders that are read to and the ones that are coddled the first five years of their lives. TV, toys, music, you can share all that stuff. But make sure you and Dalton read together.

I also want to point out the awesomeness that is the internet. There are two threads right now getting regular hits: this one and Deadshot's house. GI Joe may have brought us together but it's who we are that we relate to. Go internet!

Congrats man!  I've been trying to cut down on my internet time and so I nearly missed this!  Thankfully Raptor pointed me here.

It's a lot of work, but it's the toughest job you'll ever love.  Enjoy it, and learn to just go with the chaos.  Remember, you can sleep when your dead.
