General Joe Talk / "Draw me Black Ice"
« on: April 25, 2007, 02:12:35 PM »
I'm no Loop, but the kids at the school get a kick out of my drawings. Usually they ask me to draw them dragons or Spider-Man, but today a first grader named Olivier had a special request.

"Draw me that Power Ranger," he said, pointing at my sweater. Everyone that saw me at the meet saw my boss Black Ice hoodie.

I told him "That's not a Power Ranger. He's Cobra's operative in Canada. GI Joe."

"Cool," he said.

I thought it'd share Black Ice's universal appeal

Stepping Into The Motor Pool
Monday, December 18th, 2006

The annual Joe Canuck Meet in Hamilton has been growing in popularity and legend thanks to the selfless dedication and vision of the man they call Bounty Hunter Mike. The social gathering alone is worth the trip, no matter how far away you come for it. It has spawned a video wrestling tournament, TCG games, exclusive cards and figures, friendship, memories, and a small Montreal GI Joe Meet designed to emulate what Hamilton offers.

At this year?s Montreal Meet, there was an event that excited attendees and internet onlookers called the Speed Painting Contest. With a bag full of parts, participants had one hour to customize a figure they?d never seen before that day. Based on its success, the second Speed Painting Contest will be held in Hamilton this year, but with a twist. Montreal?s participants were given free reign to let their creativity dictate their creation. This is how we ended up with a mix of Cobras, Joes, Oktobre Guard, and unaffiliated, of army builders, Hasbro characters, and original characters. In Hamilton, participants must create a driver for an original vehicle custom, the winner of which gets to take the vehicle home.

Raptor, who currently owns fandom?s most impressive collection of half-junked vehicles, brought a new idea to the table. He proposed to send me a box full of shells and parts to make the vehicle from. But, I must post an ongoing blog detailing the progress of the creation. That way, blog readers get insight into my process when customizing a vehicle, something I?ve always said is as much architecture as it is creative.

This is the first blog entry.

At the moment, I have no idea what parts I will be working with, so I haven?t limited myself to a type of vehicle. I know I want this vehicle to fit in equally as a Joe vehicle and a Cobra vehicle, leaving the painter?s either option for their figure. At the moment, it could be anything from a snow tank to a dune buggy to an intergalactic rocket. Colour will be determined by the details that need to be filled in and where they land on the figure (I believe in colour triangulation). So, with no idea what I?m going to do, I think I?m ready to accept the Scrapheap Challenge.

On Friday I came home to a delivery notice. Low and behold, the box of plastic had arrived. It would be available for pick-up tomorrow after 1:00pm. The next day, I discovered that this is Canada Post lingo for ?available Monday after 3:00pm?. They did explain that they get deliveries like everyone else: Monday to Friday. Therefore, they wouldn?t get in this weekend. They had no explanation about why it would only be available at 3:00pm, but it didn?t matter. I?ll only be there to collect my donation at 6:00pm.

So starts the 2007 Joe Canuck Meet Scrapheap Challenge Blog. Check here often for progress reports on this, my finest 1:18 scale vehicular undertaking.

Yearly CanJoeCon Discussion / Speed Painting comes to Hamilton!

Speed Painting!

The idea of a GI Joe speed painting contest originated at the 2006 Montreal GI Joe convention. Looking for ways to improve the event over the previous year, and knowing a large part of collecting GI Joe is customizing them, I took a page from Games Workshop and created what ended up being the most popular event at the meet.

The idea is simple. You are given a FrankenJoe and an hour. In that time, you must take this mismatched creation and turn it into a figure we?d all want in our collections. The winner of the inaugural event, Redmao, painted his figure with an impressive camouflage, creating a jungle infantryman that was visually interesting.  The runner up, Raptor, made a cool Cobra trooper out of one of the ugliest heads in the entire line. What can you create when you?re painting down the barrel of a gun?

To register, you need simply flag down Raptor or myself, Scramble, and tell us that you?re interested in participating. It is $2 to enter, and an additional $2 for a FrankenJoe, each with a weapon custom-made by Raptor. You need only register once, and you may buy additional figures. The parts of these figures can not be swapped, and the baggies that contain them must remain sealed until the event begins.

When the start time is announced, you have one hour to complete your figure. We will update you at shrinking intervals, right down to a ten second countdown. Some paint and brushes will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring your own. You are allowed any non-electric tool, and must provide your own screw driver.

After the hour is complete, put down your brush. Don?t make us wrestle it out of your hands. You will then be given half an hour to write a biography for your creation, clearly indicating his code-name, military specialties, affiliation, and a little about him. You don?t need to format them like filecards, but it?s fun. Unlike the original Speed Painting contest, which left everything up to the contestants, this time, there?s a twist. A custom vehicle will be in attendance April 14th, the Scrapheap. To be eligible to win, every entry must be somehow associated with this vehicle; driver, engineer, gunner, etc.

All customs will be judged based on: Quality of application; Colour choice; Creativity; Clarity (does the figure look like his specialty?); and Biography. Each will be scored on five by four judges, for a total of 100 possible points per custom. The winner will be congratulated and awarded the Scrapheap!

That?s right: The winner of the Speed Painting contest takes home a custom vehicle! The much-hyped Scrapheap started as a box of random shells and a challenge. Raptor wanted to see what kind of vehicle I could piece together using a blindbox of unassociated parts. The creative process will be discussed in a serious of Scrapheap Challenge blogs starting THIS Monday in the JoeCanuck.com message boards!

We hope to see you at the Hamilton GI Joe Meet, April 14th! On top of the Speed Paint contest, there will be GI Joe wrestling, G.I. Joe : TCG, Customs on Display, Door Prizes, Dealers, a Custom Contest, and, of course, the exclusive figure this year: Shiver!

Quebec / Did I sell anyone these?
« on: January 16, 2007, 02:58:10 PM »
I set up a trade on Joecustoms for a bunch of figures, including a Snake Eyes frankensteined out of Comic Pack parts, and Wreckage from the Tiger Force set. I can't find these figs any more. Did I sell these at the Montreal Meet and forget about it?

General Joe Talk / Sigma Six: Lt. Stone wave anywhere in Canada?
« on: December 04, 2006, 09:12:00 AM »
The latest wave of Sigma Six has so many figures I'm dying to own, it's killing me that I can't find them anywhere. The wave I'm talking about has the first Sigma Six Lt. Stone, the first Sigma Six Zartan, the second Sigma Six Cobra Commander (in black), and artic Snake Eyes with the first Sigma Six Timber. Are these in Canada at all?

Quebec / FANatical day of speed painting, paint balling
« on: November 11, 2006, 04:44:54 PM »
For those that don't know, a TV show on TVTropolis called FANatical has been looking into doing an episode of FANatical about the GI Joe community. I've been talking with them, and apperantly there's interest in using me for the episode.

For more information on the show, read this thread:
http://http://www.joecanuck.com/joe/board/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1438&highlight=fanatical

The ideas been brought up that we recreate the Speed Painting competition from the Montreal Joe Meet, and that we enjoy a game of paint ball together afterwards.

Anyone interested, let me know. The semi-solid date being considered is the weekend of December 15th.

Off Topic / Temp website, thoughts?
« on: October 25, 2006, 11:10:16 AM »
This is the first draft of the new website for my production company, R.C, Jr Productions. Ultimately there will be a short film available for free download on the site, as well as possibly a new monthly episode of an ongoing storyline, depending on how well I work with the crew for my upcoming short Morning Crew.

Let me know what you think.
