Dawson Shooting
« on: September 13, 2006, 08:54:25 PM »

I study at Champlain, so I was lucky.  However, my good friends at Dawson College were frightened to say the least when Hell basically broke loose.  Armed gunmen opened fire inside of the school, injuring many people.  My friend must be traumatised: she saw someone get shot in the head.

I don't know what to say or think, other than this event being a horrible tragedy.

The kids here at the grade school have some pretty mixed reactions. But a lot of them know people that were at Dawson yesterday, including a first grader whose mother works there. What's hard to explain to them is why they all have heard different information, like about the number of gunners and what happened to them. I've sat many of them down and explained that much of the media would rather get the scoop than the facts so they were announcing witness testimony as facts, but most weren't really receptive to that.

It's certainly strange to live in a city where two school shootings have occured in the last twenty years.

If by 'strange' you mean 'better than the States,' I have to agree.

Actually, if you count the Valery Fabrikant shooting at Concordia in 1992, that makes three.  :(

But I agree with SEOAP. It's still safer here than in the States. Or in Toronto.

Can't believe this, but I'm going to actually have to use my MODERATOR POWER:

This is an emotional thread, but there is no need to turn it into an States-bashing. Even though many Canadians seem think it's justifiable, it is still a form of prejudice. Toronto bashing is a bit more cultural and tongue-in-cheek, but still does not feel like it has a place in this thread.

We understand your concern, but that was merely comparison, not all-out bashing.

I agree. I'm sorry if my comments were misinterpreted.
