2009 Canadian Joe Convention. / Joe Meet'09
« on: May 18, 2008, 07:52:17 PM »

I'd like to hear some of your input on this, so please vote, and speak your mind in this thread.
There's a timbit in it for ya next year.  :timbits:

Basically, where would you like to see the Canadian Joe Convention take place in 2009.
AND - what day?

Myself, I'm not a fan of Toronto or the conventions held there. The price of parking, traffic, other events taking place in the city, and construction and closures makes for an even more hectic day for people.

Oakville and Burlington, would be the same as Hamilton in my opinion -but with a higher price for the hall/location.

Niagara Falls, while a higher price than Hamilton, is still cheaper than Toronto, and makes for a much more enjoyable weekend for everyone. With two major casinos, the attractions on Clifton Hill, and the closeness to the U.S. border, Niagara Falls would also double nicely for those with families to take a small vacation and see one of the great wonders of the world!

Hamilton is where the Joe Meet has always been held. We started in a toy store, then grew in a bowling alley basement, to an  upscale hotel using both banquet halls and a meeting room. We could of used some more space for our guests, and I had to turn away close to another 40 tables/dealers to set up. So we could really use a bigger location - sadly, the next step up in Hamilton is the Convention Center downtown - and even Hamiltonians don't want to go downtown. ;-)

As for the change from Saturday to Sunday (NOT definite). Some people have mentioned that they had to work on Saturday, and thus can't attend a Joe Con/Meet on a Saturday. Traditionally, toy shows and conventions are held on a Sunday.

So, let's hear your thoughts! This poll is open-ended - meaning there's no end in sight for it. You can pick two from the options given, of course the staff of JoeCanuck.com will ultimately make the final choice, but we'd still love to have YOUR input!

But I'd really like to hear your input on these locations, and any others that you may wish to offer up!

Thanks everyone,
Mike

Saturday is the best. Gives you Sunday to "recover" before going back to work Monday.

Also, Niagara Falls is a great idea.

My personal opinion is Niagara Falls is too far for most, as the majority of people who come to the meet are from the GTA.  I now live in Hamilton (formerly Toronto), and honestly driving to Niagara Falls is a pain in the arse.  Just like when I lived in Toronto I didn't want to drive to Hamilton for the Joe meets (which I now regret), I don't (and I know others who agree with me), want to drive to Niagara Falls.  Essentially 80% of the people who came to this years meet would have a further drive, just doesn't make sense.
And just to add, my wife works at the government building downtown Hamilton and she sometimes takes the van--she pays $3 to park during the week during the day.  I know I've gone to at least 2 shows in Toronto where parking was at least $10 so I guess what I'm saying is I'd MUCH rather the show be in Niagara Falls than Toronto (this started as a Hamilton show Mike, you shouldn't fiddle with it too much).  Just my opinion of course, I thought the show was terrific this year and wouldn't change a thing.

Niagara Falls, Saturday. It has a lot more to offer and attract tourists than Toronto (sorry T-Dot), and the atmosphere feels perfect for the Meet.

Anywhere on a Sunday, really... Unless the meet is moved to late May instead of in April odds aren't exactly in the favor of me being able to attend on a Saturday.

All of those locations are about equal to me. The one thing I can say though is it would be great if the meet happened a little later in the year.

I've never been able to attend because the meet is always smack in the middle of university exams. If it could be the last weekend of April/first weekend of May I would be there 100%!!!

Having the convention in Toronto will attract the most people.

Hello,

What about Ottawa for a location lots of stores a couple of a casinos near by and also close to the new york border. It's also a lot less crowded than Toronto. Also just a thought but what about instead of trying to decide between saturday or sunday have a two day convention. I know the annual comic con thats held each year in toronto runs friday night, all day saturday and sunday. ;D

Regards

I'm for a Saturday myself.

As for location, how about London?  Seriously though, someplace most central would be the fairest to all.  Niagara Falls isn't really a lot further than Hamilton for me.  Really liked how easy it was to get to the Marriot this year but if the available size at the venue limits the con.

With the movie hype starting to increase as we get closer to the release date, I know we need to think bigger.

Hamilton. This is where it all started, by local fans [some specifically having A LOT to do with making the Joe Meet what it is] least we forget. As for the logistics of this growing gathering, there has to be a venue around that would work, and if the Hamilton Convention Centre turns out in the end to be the only place to do it, so be it. And hopefully it may outgrow that someday too.

Saturday or Sunday, unless you get an overwhelming majority suggesting one day over the other, you'll never satisfy everybody. Seeing as the convention continues to grow, it will eventually become more than a one day event and this will be a mute point.

This is an open board and by all means express yourself and your comments. As for myself I will stick to the topic of location and date and shall refrain from writing about such things as:
i) Suggesting one day over another because it interfers with my personal schedule.
ii) Suggesting I need Sundays to recover, presumably from eating too many timbits which are a Viper favorite around here.
iii) Suggesting my home town for the next Joe meet because I wouldn't have to travel as far as I did last year.
iv) Suggesting a city or area because I would like to do other things "also" on the side, because frankly I'm interested in the Joe meet, that's what the convention is about. If I want to see or visit other places, I don't really need you to move the event to the falls just for me. I can go another time or will just go there AFTER I'm done with the convention.
v) Suggesting a different month to suit ME better. I always thought downhill skiing would be better in the summer weather but I guess it just won't work. If I want to go to the Joe Meet, you pick the date, I'll show up.
vi) Suggesting that the event moves to Toronto because all the big events end up there and we'll get more people. It's real easy to get to Hamilton from Toronto. There's the roads, trains, and buses that everybody uses to go to all the big events in Toronto and get home so there's no problem taking them to get to Hamilton. And any costs coming to Hamilton are more than made up for by the fact that it is cheaper (cheaper, cheaper, cheaper) staying, eating, parking, and being in Hamilton.
vii) Suggesting that we move to any other city than the hometown of the Canadian Joe Meet. Yes it is Hamilton, yes it is a steel town. Still I have a few good places I'd like to build some Terror Dromes around the city. Here's a super quick rundown of the city and some really nice shots of the town that even locals forget are around.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamilton,_Ontario

Unfortunately I won't get to see the city much during the meet.... because I'll be at the meet.
viii) Suggesting that maybe we not switch to the falls. Niagara Falls is really best in the warmer weather, and gets lots of people there without a Joe Convention. Trying to drive around Cliffton Hill during the tourist season at just about any time of day is worse than rush hour in Toronto. Of couse you could just park your car and walk, if you can find a place to park, and enjoy the fact that Cliffton Hill is in fact a hill, and a good solid hike. Us Vipers don't have a problem with this though.

But I will suggest to anybody who wants to visit Niagara Falls, by all means book a weekend in the falls, well in advance, and for the summer. It is a truely unique adventure and there is lots to see.

As for those people that want to go to the Joe Meet, we'll go where the show is.

Sorry Mike, but you won't be able to make the event perfect for me, I don't neccessarily want to read all 1000 posts on here later on with every suggestion for "ME". Good luck with next show, I think in the end it's in good hands as we can all see with the direction that this has taken and should only grow with the new GI Joe movie in the future. A whole new generation of fans will come to find what we all love about GI Joe.......Great, now I'm off topic.....

Well, honestly, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference to me.

I'd most likely be coming up alone, so I have no need to have it
closer to Niagara Falls, but I could see that being a big appeal to
some folks out there, so it might not be a bad idea. Not to mention
there might be more available lodging in that area. As far as travel
time goes, I'm not sure how far Hamilton is from Niagara, but any time
cut from the travelling time for those of us in the states is probably
 a good thing.

Saturday vs. Sunday is probably just half a dozen of one versus six of
another. For those of us who require an extra day of travel, it would
mean missing work on Monday, but with the show on Saturday, we'd have
to miss work on Friday coming up, so I guess it doesn't matter a whole
lot, though sometimes it's easier to miss work on a Friday than a
 Monday. ;)

But that only really affects those of us so far away that we need an
extra day travelling time. Of course, as the show grows there will be
more and more people who need to travel longer distances, but
ultimately it's probably not a make or break situation...
