Action Man
« on: February 07, 2011, 09:43:19 AM »

Yeah Yeah I know a lot of folks in NA don't consider Action Man
to be Gi Joe, but that is the case.
Anyway, I thought that if anyone was interested, I just found
out that there is a pretty damn cool Action Man cartoon on
Youtube. 2 actually, one conventional art, and the other CGI.
Enjoy

CGI is likely the one from the late 90s - put out by Mainframe.  It was a fine show and my son loved both the show and the toyline.

Action Man is "G.I. Joe".

Trust me on that.

There's three action Man cartoons actually; one by DIC is traditionally animated, the other two are CGI.
I storyboarded on the first animated one, back in 1995,  for Studio B productions out of Vancouver BC. I was one of the lead 'board artists--first hired in fact, and 'boarded about 9 episodes.
One of the little-known things is that myself and a fellow G.I.Joe/Action Man-collecting 'board artist tried to put in small in-jokes into the boards whereever we could. These jokes were references to  G.I. Joe/Adventure Team and RAH--as well as homages to other things like favourite TV shows and movies ( Hard Boiled, UFO, Battle of the Planets etc).
Some of the Joe-jokes were caught and removed ( phooey!), but some survived and were "translated" into the finished artwork (they were all visual gags).
Sorry, but I don't remember any specifics as to which scenes or which episodes, because it was 15+ years ago now--but I do now we put in stuff like the AT Commander's head on a view screen, or a AT logo visible in certain spots.  I do recall giving a helicopter a registry number that was "30516" which, if you reverse it, sort of looks like " GIJOE".

So, unofficially.......at least in my mind, the two properties have always been linked ( and Hasbro went ahead about 10 years later and added a AM figure into a Joe multi-pack, so it IS official now).

          Hey Arrow,

That is too cool that you actually worked on the first show.
I really like what I have seen so far, and thanks a lot for
the additional info.

Cheers

There was a live action series in the 90's too.

Action Man has a skinnier face than GI Joe, so he's not quite the same.  Oh, and the 90's version is but a pale comparison of his former glory.

The live-action stuff wasn't a series itself, but was part of the cartoon--they were 3-4 minutes bumper/framing sequences to the cartoon, with an Australian actor in the part of AM.

Yup, that show was great fun.  My brothers and I enjoyed the heck out of it.  Of course, being big fans of Mainframe, it shouldn't come as a surprise. ;D

I love the Action Man Hasbro put out in the 00s 3.75 line. Bought the whole Night Force set just to get him last year. Had no idea the property was so active.

if its the cell animated cartoon, your probably watching  the eps I put up on yourtube. I believe I am the only one there to have put up full eps ( more than a few ) of this series

Definitely a part of the wider GI JOE universe, heck there was a GI JOE ACTION MAN figure in that night force GI JOE 6 pack and then in DDPS comics you can see Action Man on the cover of AE#25 and then later his name is mentioned in the WORLD WIDE FORCES DEPLOYMENT LIST ( he was not killed in the DDP comics like some believe him to have been )

This series is also where the JOE CON got the female character NATALIE POOLE . So not only has ACTION MAN been done in the GI JOE TOY LINE but so has his main squeeze been too. ( Action Man is also mentioned in her file card )

The mainframe series sucked , as an Action Man series , but this cell animated series was very good

you should check out the ACTION MAN section we have on www.bloodforthebaron.com, I have interviews with the series creators, writers, eps reviews, and so much more on this series. INCLUDING A PART OF THE SERIES BIBLE containing info on ACTION MAN and the many secrets of the series-which was given to me by the main writer of the series.

Also, years after mainframe was done there was 3 more CGI MOVIES done, its not the mainframe character but more like the cell animated series and was quite good
